Forest fires

This is how our sky and sun looked yesterday. Forest fires are blazing on the main land about 50 miles (as the crow flies) from here and apparently affecting our air here on southern Vancouver Island.

My camera did not like what it was seeing. Sort of spooky.

These dahlias are red and white

Little eerie and very hot.

At evening, after the sun went down, the skies turned from orange to grey

Still hazy today:-(

Its amazing to get smoke like that 50 miles from the fire. Let' s hope its soon under control and that not too many people suffer from breathing difficulties.

I hope the fire is out now, or at least under control. It must be worrying for you :(

We had lots of wildfires here in south Wales this year. Some people I know had to be evacuated because it came too near their house. It was so hot they also had difficulty breathing :(

Thank you all for you concern. There are 180 (or more) wildfires burning across our province of British Colombia.
Little bit alarming. Very dry conditions.
This is a link with an interactive map showing all the fires.

Vancouver has an awful quality of air Linda, they say worse than in Beijing.

That does look really eerie, its turned back time and your photo's have like the sepia effect of a bygone age in the photographic world, hope it clears soon Klahanie, we grumble here about the weather, its an english persons pastime but in actual fact when I see what others put up with I thank my lucky stars for the fact that I live here...

Thank you Kidsgran. We still do not see the sun. But the smoke is high up and we do not seem to smell it any more.
lincslass, every picture taken looked like from the past but today they are back to normal. I do not think that any place is without it's challenges. In addition to our 185 fires burning in BC there are over 100 wild fires burning in the province of Saskatchewan as well. They had to send an army to help fighting it. We do not have enough firefighters to control these.

I hope it will be raining today over there, Klahanie.
I had similar experience in Sicily few years ago, when mafia set fires in vineyards surrounding our hotel and all the guests standed at balconies and watched fires coming closer and closer, it was terribly hot. Fortunately, the hotel has garden on the roof and at midnight they set on irrigations, so at least we knew, we will not be burnt to death.

Wish you a good rain over there.

My friends in Vancouver say it is pretty bad and all due to carelessness.

Katarina, that had to be a horrible feeling. We are not threatened here (yet) . They might have some rain on the mainland in summer but we never do on southern part of the Island. It is bone dry here. We are in the rain shadow of Olympics mountains.

Linda, most are caused by carelessness, unfortunately.

That can't be healthy to breathe in. That's horrible to be so hazy at 50 miles out. Stay safe and pray for rain.

There is a health advisory warning . But we actually see the sun today.
Thanks for your concern, Bathgate.

I have been hearing the news of the fires, I saw this story about a plastic wine glass left on a picnic table in the forest it had magnified the heat of the sun and a large chunk of the table was smouldering. When doused with water, it hissed significantly. Luckily it was found in time - so even plastic left around can cause fires.

I am also wondering about the mirrors people like to put in their gardens to reflect the sunlight. I had one to reflect the sun light on a plant in the afternoon and it completely burned its leaves. Live and learn. Now it is in the shade.
Unfortunately we have no rains in summer on southern island so many plants just have to survive on their own.
Some do, some do not and lots of them suffer.

I was in The Gambia where also no rain till rain season & plants were watered daily. I guess different regions have to learn to cope with their challenges.
