Sand sculptures

Every summer in July there is a International sand sculpture competition few miles up the coast. We go every year to see it and this year it was on music or a song theme.
Some artists are very talented and many come year after year. It was smaller exhibition and I did not enjoy it as much as in previous years but nevertheless some of the sculptures were quite creative and detailed.
Here are some examples:

This creation was done by father and daughter team from Quebec:

They got my vote last year but this year I gave my vote to the sculpture named “Stairway to Heaven”. Maybe not as creative but the detail was incredible…front and back.

Interesting sculpture of artist from Vancouver "Nature’s song "

My OH gave his vote to “Piper”

There were few female sculptors…this one from Netherlands(creation called “Cosmic dancer”):

A gal from California(School of Rock"):

And few more images:
“Breaking through”

“Flamenco”

“Hear me Mummy”

“Tango”

“Playing it by ear”

“Lullaby”

There were few more but my pictures did not turn out well.
Next week all this will be just sand for kids to play in.
Coming out the sand sculpture area was a pretty flower bed and behind it some local craftsmen stands.

It was a warm and sunny day. Sunday well spent.

They're amazing Klahanie!!! Thanks for sharing :-) I saw some of these for the first time while on holiday in Tenerife this year and was amazed at how detailed they were, the artists had to sit there all day and night to keep them watered so they didn't fall down , fast asleep on their deck chairs late at night when we passed .

I have read that the sand has to be imported from Holland for the sand sculptures in England. Our sand is too dry.
Most interesting blog .

The Sculptures are wonderful - all very talented and creative.

Surely they must add something to the sand to make it take such height and fine detail? They are astonishing.

We had an exhibition on our coast a few years ago ,Egyptian pyramids etc. they were going to do another one but couldn't get the right sand ,the artists are very clever ....

They're very talented to do something like that :)

I do not know how much the winners earn but the artist are sponsored by local businesses and I believe that they travel to create another sand sculpture in another part of the world year round.
The art is judged by professional judges and by public as well. We get one vote each.
Thank you all for your visit.

Thank you Driad for your comment. Hope you're enjoying your summer as well.

Amy, does that meant that they import the right sand specially for the competition? They have an annual competition here but its just ordinary sand on the beach and nothing like as sophisticated as these.

I am looking forward to see your garden when the floods are gone, Junna. We cannot grow some of the plants you can. It is always interesting to see what you grow on the other side of the planet Earth.
We have this sand sculpture competition here every year . Different theme each time. I agree with you it is amazing. X

Wow . . . thanks so much for this Klahanie (which I somehow missed before). The skill of the artists is quite staggering, and it's good to know that they have the chance to build sculptures again elsewhere - brilliant!

Thanks for reading this Sheila.
They are really talented artists. What I admire the most that they know that this art will not last more than a month, then it becomes just a pile of sand for children to play in. Sort of like me doing a puzzle and then wrecking it and sending it to thrift shop for another "mad" person repeating it. My husband could never understand that. But luckily there are lots of us. :-)

11 Sep, 2014

Well, I certainly understand that because I love puzzles too (mainly the 'word' kind). You have had the fun of doing it, and then let have someone else have the experience . . . neat!

12 Sep, 2014

There certainly are some talented people about.

15 Sep, 2014

I agree....I wish I would be one of them.

Those sculptures are amazing! I wonder if that is the local beach sand, or a special sand brought in for them?
