Silent Valley

Silent Valley is area of 100 square kilometres in the High Tatras, Slovakia.
60 years ago there were living up to 10 bears. At the moment the population of bears is around 800 and they migrate more and more down to human dwellings. Bears roaming in streets of mountain spa areas are not rare.
Walks in forests can be dangerous especially in spring, when bears have cubs. Female with cubs is the most dangerous animal you can meet. However, the authors of this documntary recommend also what to do, when you meet him. Now we have another problem, then we had 60 years ago…
Enjoy the nature, I am sorry you cannot understand…

I can imagine how dangerous a mother bear could be if someone got too close to her precious cub. Most animals are the same ...even cows. A couple of weeks ago, here in NZ, a lady got too close to a calf & the mother attacked her. The lady ended up with some bad injuries, including fractured leg, pelvis & ribs. It must be beautiful scenery in that area.

Dwyllis@you are right, but what the author of this film said - and he is the one specialized in big predators like bear, wolf and a sort of wild cat living here, that bear is intelligent and shy and attacks only if he is really surprised. There are other films made from this area which proved it. If you start to cough or speak, bear usually stops, smells and quickly runs away. With cubs too. Funny is, that in the film he mentioned one situation, when he was not able to "warn" the bear and they both suddenly standed "face to face". He said, that he (author) just turned his head to the side in order to avoid eye to eye contact and standed moveless. The bear turned and ran away. :) So maybe sometimes it is about non-verbal communication. He studied bears three years to make this film and he is persuaded that this big predator doesn´t attack if you do not surprose him. Most of his food stuff are herbs, fruits (cranberries) and mountain flowers!
Thank you Sticki :)

Fascinating, Katarina. Thank you. I am afraid I have never liked bears, and have always found them very scary. As a child, if I was taken to the zoo, I never lingered near them. Having said that, I have a great respect for them. My sister owned a most beautiful Giant Schnauzer dog many years ago. They are quite rare in UK - well, they are enormous and need lots of space. Apparently they sometimes pulled milk carts in Germany. She was told that they are sometimes shot and killed by hunters in North America because they mistake them for bears. I do not like the idea of people hunting bears (or any other animals) for recreation. If you don't need to eat it, don't kill it!

If you love somebody, set them free :))
Unfortunately, population is so huge now, that they roam in streets and in night they pull around large containers with garbage. These young bears (usually males, who are pushed down from the mountains by stronger males) are called here "container bears" and must be often shot, as they lose all instincts and can be dangerous for people.

Well, I can understand the difficulty. Poor bears - and poor people if they are attacked. Balance is so important in every walk of life. Now, if it could be easily achieved, many problems would be diminished.

There is a more modern word for "problem" - a challenge :))

I think there is a similar problem in the States with black bears?

Similar challenge?:)

You are right, Katarina, "challenge" is the right word :-)
