Sitting in the Spring Sunshine....bring your cuppa!

There are now six lovely places to sit in my back garden (not counting the hot tub!) and enjoy my cup of tea. So, as the sun came out for a bit, I thought I’d do just that, and take you along, on a tour of my ‘sittouteries’.
We will start in the ‘secret seat’ right at the back of the Japanese corner. It’s a great place to hide from the rest of the family and there are some lovely plants to admire from here….

Akebia Quinata up close and in flower…

Next we move just a little way to the patio which is occasionally used for eating lunch outdoors. This is a great place to admire the Acers from, as they contrast really well with the white wall of the house. Above here is the little bird box where I have a pair of blue tits or great tits nesting…I’m just not quite sure which….in amongst my Wisteria which is determined not to flower for me!

The third little seat is just outside the Conservatory door and it’s a great place to sit in the evening as it catches the last rays. I’m pleased that at last I’ve found a plant that is happy to grow in the deep shade at the bottom of this path….Carex ‘Fishers Form’ one plant split recently and fills up this little area perfectly.

Now, there is no seat in the greenhouse, so we have to walk across the width of the garden to the gravel area for our nest spot. This part of the garden faces south-west and is therefore the sunniest, warmest, most sheltered spot and hence where all the more tender treasures end up.

And in the other gravel octagon is the metal Lutyens bench I copied from Oliveoil last year. Great views from here and it is probably the place I sit the most often. Now it’s even better because from here I can see my new (unfinished) pond!

Which is where the next seat is of course…the newest addition…the ‘turf seat’, soon to be named ‘Hobbit Hill House’, but that will happen when the hobbit door is installed…more of that later.

Anyway, this seat is made of grass taken out when I dug the pond. It faces West and is a great place to see across the whole garden and enjoy the sunshine…

Or just admire the fruit coming on in the raised beds…

Finally, we move just a couple of yards to my ‘Heuchera Garden’ and here in the shade, we can enjoy the potted plants and a view of the fruit garden…..

Thank you for coming with me on our little tour! My tea was finished by about the third seat, but never mind..I hope the sun shines on you today everyone! :))

Garden looks fab, Karen. I really love your chocolate vine.
I could have sat out here, but only if I had as many sittouteries as you have and moved around them continually, avoiding the passing storm clouds!

We have been dodging the heavy showers at the same time as we are being fried by a lovely warm sun. I enjoyed your tea breaks with you.

No sitting out today! Sudden downpours! Enjoyed the tour,Karen.

I feel as if I`ve had the privilege of a nsg garden tour you have so much of interest. I can also see the shape of the Hobbit hill seat near your pond more clearly. I`m so glad you got round to a pond to me it makes your garden complete.

Lots of lovely places to sit and while away the day: if you are anything like me you sit with a cuppa and see a job which needs doing or remember a job that you have not finished and have to get up and get on. lol. It is looking lovely your garden very pretty with lots of lovely sunshine in it today. We had sunshine too and clouds but no rain - first day for weeks we haven't had rain! YAY!!!!!!

Lovely 'sittooteries' Karen, think you have got a new name for the dictionary there!! The garden is looking great and is a nice place to sittoot in!

Sun?.. What's that? You lucky thing!
Great blog and great garden as always, Karen. Lots and lots of great plants and the pond is looking good already.
It's so full of interesting spaces, too. I like the 'hiding from the family' seat! Nowhere to hide in my wee garden!

Thanks everyone...glad some of you had some sun. Grandmage...I think that word was invented by the great Stanley Baxter...someone will correct me if I am wrong! Thank you Stroller...yes, I think you are right. A garden is completed with a pond.

You have such a very well kept garden Karen - all looks divine - amazing work. new pond already looking brilliant - like to know how you make it all look so great so fast !!

I really enjoyed finding all your seats Karen, like Olive I`m afraid my drinks do get cold or I put them down and then have to go and find them, cannot sit for long before something catches my eye, we shared your sunshine today, in fact its still shining.
Your garden always looks good and I think you`ll enjoy having the pond, I do like the Hobbit Seat, will be watching that part with interest, I wouldn`t do without either of mine, I like to listen to the water flowing whilst watching the fish and when its hot its good to sit by the bottom one as its always shady in that part of the garden, that one is home to a multitude of taddy`s at the moment, they will keep my garden clear of slugs..
Still hoping I can get my Heucheras to look like yours, lol....

Lovely sittories and beautiful garden, thought I might get out in the garden after work tonight but ......you guess it, it started to rain as I got in my car to come home:(
24 Apr, 2012
your garden is so beautiful ...sigh and so large, mine would fit in a corner of yours. We had some cheap arches at work but I simply have nowhere i can put one, so frustrating sometimes.
Cant wait to see the hobbit hill done :)

Lovely blog Karen. You've an absolutely beautiful garden. I wish I had more time to spend in mine ... one day maybe ...
24 Apr, 2012
Are you sure you ever get time to sit Karen. I love the way your tea mug appeared on the shots :), all looking perfect as ever, dont give up on tne wisteria, took years before mine flowered.
24 Apr, 2012
Haha! I think you're right, K - I only remembered it when, after the smoking ban in Scotland, the local pubs started providing 'smoke-ootories'!
It's a marvellously 'Auld Alliance' word, lol! :)))

I enjoyed a look around your garden Karen..thanks for sharing your pics...

A beautiful garden Karen

Lovely pics Karen.
Would it be possible to have an ariel shot of your garden, it would be great to see how everything sits in your garden.
Dont go hiring a plane, just add a seat on the roof, Lol.

You have a beautiful garden Karen so many places to sit and sip your tea, all so different and interesting too, Love the Acers and your Heuchera garden and the pond is looking great and such, a wonderful selection of beautiful plants ,we had sunshine too today;0))

Stunning garden Karen...Thank you for the tour...:>)

So enjoyed the tour of your lovely garden it is important to have lots of seating (if poss of course) if only to rest your weary bones in between pruning moving and tweaking, we have several benches for the visitors to enjoy their tea and cake....the pond already looks established.

Absolutely beautiful Karen, your 'Akebia' is way ahead of mine, but then.. I moved mine late last year, both of them are still in shock I suppose they were both well over 10 feet high, I had to cut them down to just over 2 feet to move them.
24 Apr, 2012
This is very beautiful and you are very talented ,Everything is wonderful !!

Thanks San...those arches...what a time I had getting them to look ok. They will be great when they are clothed and they have really settled in to the garden now and I really love walking under them!
Thank you Numbty, and Paul...you are exactly the same...everything done in the blink of an eye and looking lovely! :))
Lincslass...I almost 'never' sit down in it and that is one of my 'goals' this year....to spend one minute in each seat every day...a sort of meditative journey around the garden. Surely I will manage 6 minutes!! Not all of my heucheras are looking good...the lime green ones have suffered particularly badly, which is a pity as I love them so much! I'm hoping one or two will recover, but I noticed that my local nursery, which sells loads of Heucheras, doesn't seem to do the lime ones. I think they are less hardy.
Nana d....rain here for the next two days....sigh! I hope you get some sunshine! :)
Squarefoot...thank you...it is a good size, just big enought to keep me interested but not too busy to be a burden. I hope one day you will have more space, but I bet you do wonderful things in your little plot, and a small garden can be so spectacular as you can afford to spend a little more on nicer pots, better fencing etc. etc.
Sheila and Dawn, thank you both, you are very kind. Don't worry, Dawn, I won't give up on it......yet! :)) Sheila....I hope you will find more time....it is hard when you have to work and you are sitting in an office watching the sun shining...I've been there!
Karen....I just love those old Stanley Baxter progs. I roll about laughing....I just love those Parliamo Glasgow sketches.....absolutely hilarious. I bet I find them even better because I am English and can't/couldn't understand the Glaswegians half the time! :)) (I do get most of it now after 26 years here!) "Tummeltintabed" has got to be one of the best ones!!
Thank you Richard and Suzy. Very kind, thanks for looking.
Willinilli....I wonder if I could get a 'perch' up there with the crows and pigeons on the roof! :)) We had an aerial shot of our old house, courtesy of a photographer coming to the door...it was great! Perhaps that will happen here eventually!
Thank you Pansy , Moti and Dotty. Glad you enjoyed the tour. :))
Michaella...I hope they recover soon and get growing for you. They really do romp away fast once they get their roots down, don't they! :)
Junna, you are very kind, I am touched by your generous comment :))) Thank you!
Thanks everyone! Karen :))

It's taken me ages to read through your blog and comments today, constant interruptions (very inconsiderate of them!)
All lovely pictures Karen. Your conservatory is huge, not seen inside it like that before. I would happily come and sit around for you while you work, especially on 'Hobbit Hill'. Can't wait to see the little door in place.
Grey, wet and bloomin' freezing again here today. It must be nearly time to call the hose pipe ban off Lol!!
25 Apr, 2012
Thanks Annie...not huge, but big enough for me to live in! :))...when I'm not living outdoors! :) Same weather here, but very windy as well....really horrid today. Only venturing out to the shops.
25 Apr, 2012
With your lovely garden to look after, do you actually get the time to sit out Karen! Thanks for the tour, I enjoyed it.

Hello hun! I thought I would ask this question on the open forum. I bought a new Acer palmatum atropurpureum tonight in Morrisons, £10.00 and beautiful. Which compost would you recommend or do you think I should mix normal compost with some ericaceous? Btw it is going in a pot :o)))
25 Apr, 2012
Yes, that's exactly what I would do Annie, or just use the ericaceous, but recently I read that Acers are not fussy about soil type...so that was a misconception on my part. Ericaceous is usually a bit weightier than multi purpose, which dries out too easily in my experience. :)) Good for you for going back to get the Acer! Lovely idea!

Thanks Karen x
