The Scottish Rock Garden Club - Early Bulb Display

Well, I finally found time to write this blog. I recently joined the SRGC and went along to their Early Bulb Display in Dunblane in mid Feb. It was a great opportunity for some early garden time!

I set off on the train early in the morning to get there before the display opened as Moongrower had warned me that it gets extremely busy….she was right. Here’s my train heading for Perth…

I arrived at 9.50am and there was a bus load of people going in to the halls already!

See how busy it was….and look carefully..just in front of the stage is a book display (to the left) and a man in a green sweater with his arms folded….I’m pretty sure that’s our Bulbaholic! :)) It was lovely to meet him and Moongrower doing their thing for the SRGC.

The first plants to greet me were the snowdrops…very appropriate….

This one caught my eye as it was so perfect and had a texture just like silk flowers! I couldn’t be sure it was actually a real plant at first but it was!

The day included two talks on Cyclamen by Melvyn Jope and Martyn Denney Chairman and Secretary of the Cyclamen Society . I was able to stay for the first and it was really interesting. I enjoyed it very much. I learned that it isn’t a good idea to have coum and hederifolium too close, as hederifolium will overtake the less vigorous coum….see, I did remember something! What these guys didn’t know about Cyclamen wasn’t worth knowing and their enthusiasm made me want to go wild plant hunting myself!

Blue flower….wow! My friends know how much I love blue flowers…

Orchid having a really good laugh!

Primula Bhutanica Arduane

My favourite narcissus….made me smile :) n. romieuxii

Study of a narcissus

Ornithogalum for sale! There were some really good opportunities to make purchases from some great nurseries at the event. Nurseries that I would find it hard to access normally. ;)))))

Crocus gargaricus

Crocus Diflorus Weldenii ‘fairy’

Iris display

Cyclamen display

At lunch time I went to the cathedral, but sadly it was closed for lunch…sigh. I wanted to look in it before catching my train home.

Dunblane….by the time I left it was snowing quite heavily, and I was absolutely freezing!

I’m sorry I don’t know what this is…possibly a fritillaria of some kind…just a beautiful flower!

Thanks for sharing my lovely Scottish Rock Garden Club early bulb experience!

Thanks for sharing this Karen and I miss looking at you! That water level looked as if it was creeping up to those houses. I think I would be worried if I lived there. Are you going to tell us what you bought?

Brilliant blog Karen. My favourite photo has to be that lovely Primula bhutanica Arduaine. I'm looking forward to visiting the Edinburgh Show on 14th April. Find 2012 shows all over Scotland on the following site. Oji the Aberdeen show is on the 19th May so you may not need to wait a year to experience the delights of the SRGC shows.

Great blog as always Karen. Alpines are such gorgeous little chaps arent they? I can see a few more converts as a result of your informative blog. I too love blue flowers, this is an excellent way to fill a cold greenhouse with interest through the winter. Are there Alpine societies near to Kent, do you know? I will definately look out for those beautiful little daffodils - love em!

8 Mar, 2012

Thank you so much Poppy. I really don't have a clue about where all the alpine societies are. I bet you could find them online though :) hope you do!

8 Mar, 2012

Poppylover there are three AGS branches in Kent. Either type Alpine Garden Society or copy the urrl below in to your browser to see where they are. They are all over the UK. http://www.alpinegardensociety.net/groups/local/venues-and-contacts/
Maybe its time for the boys to add Links to Societies and groups of interest where we can access news.

8 Mar, 2012

Ty scotsgran and Karen Ill have a look :-)))) That sounds like a really good idea about linking to Societies too

8 Mar, 2012

That's a good idea Scotsgran...are you going to suggest it to Peter and Ajay? :)

8 Mar, 2012

I have put up a blog to see if there is any interest first. No point in asking for something that is not going to have a wide appeal for other members. Thank you for your support on it.

8 Mar, 2012

Oh! Karen....what a lovely day out and you managed to get onto the train with all your purchases!!

Ta Bilbo! :)

12 Mar, 2012

How come that I have only just spotted this blog - hiding it from me, Karen! It was a great day out and your blog does it justice.
Early bulbs is one of the best events as it includes a couple of talks from international speakers. If anyone visits any of the other SRGC shows look out for the man at the book stand and say hello.

12 Mar, 2012

What a lovely day out for us to share with you, Karen! Glad you bought a Brazen Hussy . . . that was one of Christopher thing's faves - the Great Dixte . . . oh, I know, Lloyd! lol.

12 Mar, 2012
