Reflections.....

I know I am very lucky to live so close to the sea and to the country park too. Today Molly and I had another long walk in the country park and after Christmas it was exactly what we both needed. We were greeted by the sound of a pheasant calling and a flock of sheep grazing. Somehow, these sounds lifted all the weight of Christmas right off my shoulders..aaaaaah! We spent a good couple of hours walking in the woods along side the reservoir and we saw such beautiful colours and sights that I wanted to share with you all. So, here are a few reflections for you…especially those of you who can’t manage a long walk in the country……cheers! :))

At last…a breath of fresh air!

Sunshine in the woodland

Mid-winter light

Mosses…

Molly (perhaps we should have named her ‘Mossy’!?) sets her heart on another unsuitable ‘stick’ which is actually a tree root….we spend some time here while she tries really hard for a long time to remove it……(Karen raises eyebrows)…

..until eventually I find a more suitable stick for her to jump for…

I’m hoping one of you will be able to tell me just what this is….

…what a lovely surprise!

Jewels of the forest…

Ah…now, here are those reflections I promised you…

So, there we are…a walk in the park…a walk around the shopping centre anyone?…no?…I thought not! :))

Lovely, Karen. You can sense the peace and quiet just from the photos. Yes, we are both lucky to have these peaceful places to wander around in. And this year there has been the bonus of the most benign Christmas weather we have had for a very long time to allow us to enjoy being out. Quite a change from last year!

Wow Karen - gorgeous pictures - that lake is awesome!!!! Love the mossy wood !!! - looks like cormorant or something the bird ??

27 Dec, 2011

i wondered about a cormorant but i wasnt sure?

27 Dec, 2011

think it is the female cormorant - checked in book - looks like it :))

27 Dec, 2011

ah that explains the brownish colour as opposed to the black one i usually see.

27 Dec, 2011

could be female or winter plumage says they are duller - book says here too :))

27 Dec, 2011

suppose its too late in the year for a juvenile??

27 Dec, 2011

Yes it looks like young - that what confused me - the birds are singing more than usual for December this year - have you noticed that ??

27 Dec, 2011

even at 4 in the morning!!!

nuthatch, woodpigeon, blue tit, robin and great tit all in the garden today.

27 Dec, 2011

that's great Stickitoffee - haven't seen nuthatch for years - love the sound of them in the morning :)))))))

Hello Molly just great to get out for a welcome walk and run about.

Maybe next time meet Mum we could all go for a walk .

Great blog Karen :)

27 Dec, 2011

I never worry about Mollies...Beautiful dogs. What a nice walk.

27 Dec, 2011

Thanks everyone...I looked up Cormerant and it does look like that..a juvenile. How strange...they must have had a late brood perhaps. There are loads of adult ones...black..down at the beach, but this looks very different with it's brown feathers.

27 Dec, 2011

I noticed a buzzard being mobbed by about 6 hooded crows today - they tend to do that more in the mating/nest-building/young-rearing season.

27 Dec, 2011

Such a lovely refreshing walk to blow the cobwebs off.

28 Dec, 2011

We went for a walk early this morning. We'd been out to dinner last night and needed to clear our heads. There had been a heavy frost and all the trees were 'sleeping'.....A sudden flash of colour turned out to be a green woodpecker and it transformed our walk.
It's almost as if that bright plumage has no place in a winter wood; the sight of it lifted our spirits. It's amazing what just one bird can do.

28 Dec, 2011

Karen that was lovely! I could almost smell the moss and dead leaves, damp wood and the sharp cool smell of the water. And Molly, reminding us that altho we might not achieve the impossible, something else more suitable, will surely come along!
A truly evocative picture walk!

Beautifully put Tet. Gorgeous walk Karen, and typical of you(!) to share it with those of us who aren't near similar peaceful scenes - thank you. It looks fairly mild again today, and you've inspired me, so I'll go for a short walk and enjoy the sky and winter trees!

28 Dec, 2011

Wow, Karen, you are so lucky to live there, and I'm so envious. Although I love our house, it doesn't actually lead you anywhere (apart from allotments) and what I wouldn't give for a walk through the woods.

28 Dec, 2011

Karen I have thoroughly enjoyed taking this walk, whilst we have got some wonderful woods near by I haven`t been able to enjoy them as I usually do at this time of year as I`ve been a little off colour for some weeks, the photo`s taken (obviously taken with the artists eye) really show how wonderful the country side is and how it lifts our spirits, well its certainly lifted mine.

hope you feel better soon stroller

This prompted and encouraged us out of the house this afternoon, too, Karen. Wonderful walk - freezing cold, but lots to see. Collected some wild juniper berries and greeted loads of friends out on the same mission!

28 Dec, 2011

Much, much better thanks Sticki.

28 Dec, 2011

oh thats good, glad to hear that stroller

28 Dec, 2011

Thanks Gattina...I have been amazed at the amount of Buzzards I've seen lately....just sitting there on the side of the dual carriageway watching the traffic! I'm glad you enjoyed your walk....really glad you felt inspired by my photos! :))

Thanks Homebird! Expat...that is a lovely description of the effect that nature can have on people like us! :)))))

Tetrarch...she can teach us all a lesson with that determination! :)

Thanks Sheila and Rose..it is only a five minute drive from here, I really need to get in to the habit of going more often!

Stroller, I'm so glad you are feeling much better now...it will be spring again before we know it. The gardening addiction has really started to kick in with me...I was outside yesterday after the walk, tidying up the greenhouse and pottering....I can't wait to get started again....totally addicted! lol ;)

Lovely walk Karen

28 Dec, 2011

I'm glad you tried walking off some of that extra Christmas food !

28 Dec, 2011

I've really enjoyed looking at your fantastic blog Karen..I was almost there:-) On Christmas day I saw in the distance a single crow (?) attacking a bird of prey of about the same size such aerobatics, but they were to far away for proper identification. Went on for some time. Yesterday, murky early morning, sans specs, I saw on the roof top opposite a small pure white bird. I was very excited and didn't want to leave the window to search for specs as it might have flown off before I found them and i.d. would have been imossible. Eventually tiny white bird moved...allowing me to see the outline of a magpie...felt somewhat stupid lol. I Love the pics of Molly, I don't wish to be personal, but erm..has her waist line expanded a smidgeon? I wish my girls had a little of her energy ...wish I had too come to think of it. I did end up buying Queens of Sweden by the way for front garden, Happy New Year:-)

29 Dec, 2011

Thanks Sheila...Bornagain, she is a little bit 'porky' at the moment...I shall have to try harder at the long walks I think! Thanks San...Christmas has been very nice thank you..I bet you have loved having Joe home. Rachel and Callum are still both here, which is lovely, but we spent most of today in Dundee cleaning his room in the flat as there was a 'mould growing' issue! lol! Typical boy! Scott's 50th birthday tomorrow...unbelieveable!! Callum will be 20 on New Year's Day...oh well...that's life! Time flies... :))) x

Dear friend
Where abouts is it. Amazing woods! or is it your secret place? Very nice. Beautiful trees. Nature at its best hey!? Vanes

31 Dec, 2011

Beautiful. sometimes winter pictures are better than summer ones don't yo think?

31 Dec, 2011

More about shape and form than just bright colours.

31 Dec, 2011

That's a good observation, Steragram, about winter pics. :o)

31 Dec, 2011

Hi Vanes, welcome to GOY! This is Crombie Park in Angus, just about four miles north of Carnoustie where I live. Not at all secret, there are always lots of other people there doing the circuit of the loch with their dogs! :)

Yes, I think you do get some great photos in the winter time...it is the low sunlight. Summer is very hard to get good photos because of the glare on sunny days!

Great blog Karen, I too am feeling anxious to get back in the garden and feeling lost without it. Your blog has just reminded me how beautiful winter can be and how to get the best from it. My dogs will be super happy - new years resolution find a beautiful wood to go for a walk - Ill keep you posted!

3 Jan, 2012

Yes Gattina and TT - and also the way the sun lights up the moss on the tree trunks - the effect of the light coming from a lower angle can be magical.

3 Jan, 2012

How delightful to have these woods on your door step, such a treat on a crisp dry day to go for a walk and breathe in all that lovely fresh air, thanks, loved the photos.

4 Jan, 2012

Good for you plover! I am definitely going to go there more often. Thanks DD! :) I am in St Lucia....just saw my first humming bird of this trip! :)))))))
