Highlights of our week in Tenerife

Well, nothing does us quite as much good as a week in the sun during the colder months. We arrived home at midnight last night and I must say I am feeling so much better for the rest and change of scenery. The Hotel was absolutely smashing. Food was first class, and the weather was, as usual in Tenerife, perfect …..well, perfect for us anyway, as it never gets too hot.

We did hire a car for three days with intentions of exploring the Island a little, but one 9km ride of terror down the mountain from Guia de Isora to Playa del San Juan was quite enough for any sane person, and the car sat in the garage for the other two days! I was pretty close to insisting Scott stopped and let me walk…yes, it was that bad! So the rest of the week turned out to be very, very lazy and relaxing. Here are some pretty pics for you, mostly of plants of course!

Here are some lovely Palms at Los Gigantas with the famous cliffs in the background.

Recently I read a novel set in Africa that mentioned this plant and I wondered what it could be like…..I found out at the airport where they sold it for gardening tourists to bring home…‘Flambouyant Plant’…aptly named, don’t you agree?

Someone has been busy on Costa Adeje pebble beach!

This beautiful pure white heron-like bird visited us every morning to have breakfast at the hotel fish-pond. I hope one of you is going to tell me it’s name….it was so beautiful, I wanted to paint it! Neon green feet!

This is some of the hotel fish pond..I’ve never seen so many fish in a pond!

In the hotel gardens…ladies’ fingers…bananas that I’ve seen before growing in the Caribbean..

This part of Tenerife is covered with banana plantations. Unlike the ones in the Caribbean, they are very ugly I’m afraid to say….here’s one so you can see how they spoil the hillside….

The Island of La Gomera from our hotel pool.

A Blue-flowering shrub that hopefully one of you can identify….Keith?

And of course, here’s one just to prove that I was there and still thinking about gardening! :))

Right, now I must get off my own page and go and see what the rest of you have been up to while I’ve been away! It’s always great to be home…Cheers!

Glad you enjoyed your break and thank you for letting us see what you enjoyed as you sat in the sun. I think your bird could be a Litte or Snowy Egret. I cr which one as a juvenile has green on its legs.

Ha ha Bilbo! I'm so glad you read the blog...lovely that you understand my terror!! Wouldn't have been so bad if OH hadn't been so 'challenged' by driving on the right and we hadn't got lost for ages in Adeje trying to get back on to the low road AND he hadn't tried to go around a roundabout the wrong way just before that!! lol!

Thanks SG...yes, you said the same as Bilbo....good to have a name for him! :))

Me either Cinders, and that sun is tempting..the car ride not and the banana farms are an eyesore but the flowers are beautiful and you obviously had a wonderful time. Thanks for sharing Karen.

Great pics, Karen. Having just come back from a week in the sun I can say,for once, that I can look at these pictures and enjoy them without a trace of envy!

lovely photos, lovely plants, lovely pool!! thanks karen, i think the little white heron like bird may be an egret??
we hired a car in austria once ~ only went in it to get to the airport and back ~ much too scary otherwise!!!

Glad you had a great week Karen. I've never been to Tenerife, so it was good to see it. That pool looked gorgeous . . . I'm really missing swimming as I hate indoor pools!
Btw, my OH loves scary roads - he just tells me to shut my eyes (I have to shut my mouth too, lol).

Just the perfect blog to read on a dreary Guy Fawkes night ... I love the photo with the view of La Gomera ... brings back memories of some lovely holidays in the Canary Islands ... I wonder if you bought your GW mag at the airport? ... Sort of thing I would do! ... :o))) . . . . .

5 Nov, 2011

Oooh no Shirley...they cost about £8 in the airport. I almost bought a mag. last time but saw the price in time! I took all three of my gardening magazines with me and read a bit of all of them!

Thanks every one for your great comments. Glad to hear that I am not the only one who is a bit of a 'feartie' on the mountain passes!

5 Nov, 2011

Pleased to hear you had a nice time Karen. Nice blog!

5 Nov, 2011

Pleased you enjoyed your holiday Karen and I also like your reading material, lol.
Lovely photo`s..

5 Nov, 2011

Glad to see you got to soak up the sun and see so many exotic sights. :)

6 Nov, 2011

Sounds a bit like those two bad roads we were on once when you were little Karen, Hard Knot Pass and Rhinos pass
(DryNose pass!!) can you remember. Never been on that one again. It was awful and that was riding on the left hand side of the road, we travelled miles around it to get back home that day.

Good to see the pictures though it all looks so very pretty. Plus some sunshine to help you get through the dreary winter months.

Welcome Home

6 Nov, 2011

Lovely pics Karen, and pleased you enjoyed the sun, we were only talking this morning about maybe a week in Tenerife come the end of Jan, and looking at your photos, I'm more determined than ever now....:o) I'm sure I have a pic of the flowers of that blue shrub, I saw something very similar in Australia, off to check up now.......

6 Nov, 2011

Oh Janey, I hope you do go. It would do you both good. We were there in January too and we thoroughly enjoyed it then as well.

Thanks everyone for your comments and good wishes. It was a lovely time but I am always glad to get home, especially when it is lovely and sunny as it has been this weekend.

Mum, 'Drynose' has nothing on Tenerife...you and I would have been walking down together if you'd been there! :)) x

6 Nov, 2011

hi karen so glad you had a lovely relaxing hols and you sure look good for it by your picture there, lovely pictures wish i was going now iv seen these, welcome home :o)))

6 Nov, 2011

Thank you San! btw, I painted a double canvas for my living room....hated it, messed about with it...then it sat in Cal's room for a couple of months, but I finally put it on the wall just before we went away! It can stay up until I do something better! :)))

6 Nov, 2011

Don't tell me you're a perfectionist, Karen?! Be like me, I'm an IMperfectionist, lol! Much more relaxing . . .

6 Nov, 2011

I know, I really do Sheila. I am trying ever so hard to change my ways! :))) Perfectionism is just really, really daft!! Nothing in the world is ever perfect! Sadly, knowing this is different to changing your habits!

6 Nov, 2011

Welcome back to dreary ol' Blighty, Karen! LOL! We are in for a few cold, cloudy days next week it seems!

We have some cousins who live in Tenerife & they would do whatever they could to leave the islands & get back to Madrid! Their kids are always complaining about the "horrible" weather. They very often have a calm zone over the islands that is very depressing with hardly a breath of air in weeks & the heat is very oppressive. I've never been there but their descriptions of the weather makes me glad I don't live there!

6 Nov, 2011

well done karen can you send me a photo please, would love to see, artists are always critical of their own work lol :o))

6 Nov, 2011

Hmmmmmm..........perhaps ;)

Balcony, it must be totally different to Madrid, but it certainly does the job for a week in the winter time for me!

6 Nov, 2011

Lovely pics Karensusan. Have never been to Tenerife, but our friends go 2 or 3 times a year as they have an apartment there. Glad you enjoyed it . Hope it wasn't too cold for you when you got back.

6 Nov, 2011

Thanks Rose. Nope, it's been beautiful. A two day sunshine spree here in East of Scotland. However, we did have quite a heavy frost this morning which is most unusual for November, so we're bracing ourselves now thinking 'here comes another stinker'...lets hope we're wrong! :S

6 Nov, 2011

Aaah brings back some happy memories for me too, glad you had a good time I remember seeing those stone 'sculptures' too and thinking someone must have been very bored, lol, oh well roll on March we're not going till then, big one though my 50th and our 25th wedding anniversay so we're going to Antigua for 2 weeks can't wait, having to stop Rob packing now though:-)

7 Nov, 2011

Ah, Simbad...we also have a biggie coming up in Jan...St Lucia for 2 weeks...OH's 50th.....this conversation could soon turn into holiday poker..."I'll see your St Lucia and rise by a month in the Seychelles..." lol!! Those sculptures weren't there in January. The tide must wash them away every year, so somebodies must re-do them!!

7 Nov, 2011

As always your blogs are great reading.

Here your news tomorrow

8 Nov, 2011

It's a young little egret, Karen. The feet get yellower as it matures. In great egrets, the bill is yellow and the feet and legs darker. It's hard to see the scale of this splendid fellow from the picture, but I'm sure that's what it is. They call them Snowy egrets in the States, but they are the same thing and they are found through lots of bits of Europe and Africa. We've seen them here on the riverbanks, although the big grey herons are far more common. Pretty, aren't they?
My word, don't you look relaxed? And warm! Sounds like a great holiday.

8 Nov, 2011

Thank you Gattina....I'd guess he is about half the size of a Heron. Thank you for the info. Yes, he is beautiful. I can't recall ever seeing one before.

8 Nov, 2011

He had a habit of perching on the fountain spout to catch his breakfast and once we saw the fountain come on and he got a very big and sudden enema!

8 Nov, 2011

He obviously agrees with colonic irrigation,Karen..but every day ?? Oh heck ! :o)

8 Nov, 2011

Oooooh, ouch!
I was re-reading your blog, Karen. I used to have quite regular and very realistic nightmares about coming up to roundabouts when we first moved here - not about actually going round them the wrong way but about not being able to remember which country I was in and where I was supposed to position the car and having to make the decision QUICKLY in heavy traffic. It took me ages to get to grips with driving over here, but I skid round the bendy, narrow mountain roads like a pro now, forget our visiting passengers who aren't used to it and they all end up looking terrified and green round the gills. It's driving in towns that scares me.
p.s. I used to paint for a living, and could never bear to see my own pictures on the wall - I was hypercritical and used to get quite upset about minor defects that no-one else could ever see. Try looking at them reflected in a mirror - they always look better!

8 Nov, 2011

Good tip Gattina...thank you! The painting is question is just not 'me'. I did it to 'go with' a painting I had already bought....not a good idea to try to copy someone else's style. I would have been better just doing something totally different. You live and learn!

8 Nov, 2011

i do that Gattina, was told to look at paintings in the mirror and it does work karen :o)

8 Nov, 2011

Tenerife - nobody mentioned the volcano. When you go again please don't miss it, the view from the top is absolutely amazing and well worth the long drive up the hill.

10 Nov, 2011

Probably not with Scot driving though eh Karen! lol sorry should not laugh too loud people might take me the wrong way.

10 Nov, 2011

Just catching up on a few blogs, so many now, pleased you had a good relaxing holiday, set you up for the winter.

10 Nov, 2011

Mum, how very very dare you? ;)) That volcano 'Mount Teide' is three times the height of Ben Nevis. I think I would have needed a very warm coat and gloves Steragram, and a sick bag for the journey!! Maybe next time ;S

Thank you DD....we are going away again later on...mid-winter....only six weeks to go...we are totally spoiled rotten this year! OH is 50 next month, so you have to celebrate don't you! :))

11 Nov, 2011

But of course you do, oh to be 50 again lol

11 Nov, 2011

Great blog, Karen. So colourful and I loved the bird too. Yes, driving abroad can be scary and I have done it in the past, but never had a problem until we went to Jersey. I had driven everything from Jags to Pick up trucks, but when we went to Jersey and hired a mini I managed to back it into a HOUSE and my OH never let me forget it. Duh!!!!!!

11 Nov, 2011

I'm so pleased you had a good holiday, Karen. We went to Tenerife some years ago, and stayed in the north of the island. What nobody tells you is that it's often cloudy there, due to the volcano. :-( We did have a car, but obviously missed 'your' road!

We get egrets here occasionally...lovely to see them. Maybe they're summer visitors? I must try to find out.

11 Nov, 2011

It wasn't cold at all Karen, and no need for a sick bag - believe me, I am the queen of tickly stomachs! It was a beautiful drive up through the woodland.

11 Nov, 2011

Thanks Breda, Daisy and Spritz.

11 Nov, 2011

So pleased you had a good time Karen, the break must have been good for you. Great blog.

15 Nov, 2011

Thank you Dawn...hope your garden is doing well...I can just imagine raking the leaves up there...your waist will be tiny!! :))))

16 Nov, 2011

Hi Karen. The garden is fine thanks, the trees have been bright this autumn but as you guessed, leaves falling now. My back's a bit sore with collecting them, waist ok, lol. 3 bin liners full for composting so far but most leaves still on the trees. I leave the ones in the woodland and a nice carpet of grass suppressing leaves evolving.

16 Nov, 2011

Yes, it's lovely to see a carpet of leaves on a woodland floor! :)) My back sore today as well...I sympathise!
