Hairy Nicoll's Pendicle ;)

We decided to go for a walk in the local country park today as it was mild and not too windy. Molly was very pleased as you can tell….

She spent the first 20 minutes searching for a suitable stick……you know what Molly considers a suitable stick is not always very realistic…..but she has a big heart!

Believe it or not, the whole tree was moving as she tried to remove one of those little ends of branches. Eventually we walked on and I did find her a stick more suited to her strength!

The resident Swans have managed to rear four Sygnets this year….what a result, considering our weather….I suppose they don’t mind a lot of rain though!!

At the end of the lakeside walk is this traditional Scottish But n’ Ben, now used as storage. It dates from the early 1800s and was part of a small holding, known as a ‘Pendicle’. This one is called Guildymuir Pendicle. In 1858 this small-holding passed to a man called Hairy Nicoll…(I am not having you on..that was his name)…and he lived here and worked a small area of the surrounding land as a Tenant. He also worked on farms nearby and eventually became a ‘roadman’. I think his story is a good example of the changes that the Vicorian rural people will have witnessed and endured.

The But n Ben is a lowly two-roomed dwelling of course…but what a lovely place it would be to live now…..probably not in those tough times though! To my mind, this is crying out for a fire to be lit and a cottage garden planted!

Nice blog, some lovely pics. I laughed at the one of Molly and that big 'stick'. Does she not know she's only a little dog! lol

Beautiful scenery Karen and as you say that little but and ben is crying out for a cosy log fire and some cottage style planting. Molly gave me a laugh she looks as if she`s sizing up for some caber tossing.lol.

Thanks everyone! Molly really doesn't know she is small....I think most Jack Russells are the same! Glad you enjoyed the scenery, it is a nice place, especially on a sunny autumnal day when it's not too busy.

What a lovely blog with lovely pictures. What a pearl - I will lite the log fire, you can grow the roses, Lulu and the rest of the arts and craft clan can decorate then we could lite a bonfire with Molly's stick collection and all gather round and sing and dance and when we finally got tired out could sit and blether about our plans for the garden. oh and grannyb could tell us all a story and scare the wits out of us all, then off to bed to dream. lol. oh the dreams.

One word. B E A U T I F U L.

Every time I see all those pictures with your pets and your lovely dog now Karen, I wonder if I am the only G.O.Y member without an animal Pet? Does it have to be a dog or a cat? Foxes, squirrels, rats plenty in my garden don't qualify? I believe no. I feel very lonely. Any body else up there to make two of us? Nobody of course.

When I see on the back of many cars the sign "Pets are for life and not only for Christmas" I feel good for being honest and not having one. Many other unqualified people have them and many more will have them come Christmas. And you all know what they do after.
Would it not be better if they made a donation instead. I promise to do it next time they drop a leaflet through my letter box.
You don't need to have an animal pet in order to love animals.
A LITTLE OUTSIDE THE GARDENING LINES BUT "OCCASIONALLY" WE ARE ALLOWED TO DO IT.
Good night.

Lovely walk Karen, smashing photo`s as well, hope Molly wasn`t trying to warn you to stock up the logpile for winter, lol......

Perfect blog for an autumn day. It all looks so peaceful and quiet. Lovely photos - and that little house, now ...think of all the history it has seen. No rowan tree, though. That's unusual. Didn't they always plant one nearby to ward off the witches? (I don't take any chances - I always had a rodden tree in my gardens! )

Oji, I didn't take a proper look around for the Rowan tree....next time!

Costas, you are so right about the pets thing! I remember the day we brought Molly home from her parents' house and I had this awful sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach...like...'oh no, I am now responsible for this living creature for about the next 15 years.....' And of course it was really for the children who within four years had both left home! So stick to your decision and make do with the birds etc!

Bilbo, you are spot on. She has 'guarding points' around my garden fence where she goes and shouts at the neighbours (large) dogs. I am sure she thinks they are going to be really frightened of her! ;)

Mum, the last thing I need is a scary story before bedtime! Last night I went through the apocalypse AGAIN!! :S Must stop eating cheese, even for lunch!

Was that a dream Karen.........I've been having very strange, intense and dark holocaust ones..........

10 Oct, 2011

Yes it was Lulu. Mind you, bad and disturbing dreams are nothing new for me...I have a very powerful imagination...but this one was a corker! Of course, it could be the Maca! lol....oh no, now I've started that off again! :))

I have had cats for years but like you Costas I have foxes, squirrels and birds to look after now.

Oh! how lovely, Karen. What a lovely park to have nearby, and I love your doggie. She's gorgeous; and she reminds me of our Pippa ( sadly gone now ) who was never happier than when she had a stick and water to swim in, and your photos are fantastic. I really enjoyed looking at them, thank you. looking forward to your next blog... X

SEE MY PM

Hi, I wondered if you would mind if I used your photo of the But 'n Ben on my website? I used this picture as the inspiration behind a set of felt houses I made to play a hiding game with children in a library storytime. My older posts can be viewed at http://loonsandquines.blogspot.com.
