Sea Glass Mosaic

This is a little blog about the making of my Sea-Glass mosaic. A new venture for me in to the art of Mosaicing…inspired by Lulu.

I know you are all brilliant gardeners, and our love of nature extends to other areas including statues, pebbles, Pottery etc., so I hope you will excuse this non-gardening foray!

First I collected lots of sea glass over about five walks on the beach. Some is unusable as it is not at all flat. I have one really beautiful lilac blue piece and I was sad that I couldn’t fit it in, but it’s just too rounded. Anyway, here is the frame I made from a piece of pine and some beading. I painted it silver….and played around until I was fairly happy with the ‘design’. For me it represents an underwater scene with a little sea creature swimming above the Kelp….I wonder if any of you have seen it that way!

Next I glued the glass down using waterproof PVA glue as recommended by Lulu. The design had to be slightly altered as the frame was roomier than my design!

Then it had to be grouted, and the glass had to be cleaned with a dry cloth before the grout was dried on.

Finally, I varnished the glass to give it back it’s transparent quality….

And here it is hanging in my ‘Guest Bathroom’…ready for you to see when you visit me in Bonnie Scotland.

Thank you Lulu..couldn’t have done it without you, and thanks to everyone for your encouragements and kindness! Cheers!

Well do you know Tet...funny you should say that...but I've always said if I had loadsamoney I would invest in Craftsman made furniture and carpets and pieces of art...not for the investment, just because I love stuff that's been made with care and imagination...So, I haven't the money, so I am making my own 'art' now! :))) Thank you everyone, you are kind, and I'm glad you like the mosaic.

Thats really lovely K have you thought of picking up sea pottery?? my Son made a very large frame for a mirror out of blue and white, it takes a lot of patience and talent both of which I have neither. lol.

8 Oct, 2011

It's lovely Karen, a great job!
It looks smashing in that bathroom. Bet your mum is looking forward to receiving hers :)
It's a pity you couldn't use the lilac piece in this work, but I'm confident you will find another use for :)

8 Oct, 2011

very elegant. Karen, as we do not have sea, what is exactly the sea glass?

9 Oct, 2011

Hi Katarina...sea glass is simply pieces of broken glass, mostly refuse, sometimes the result of wrecked ships, that is weathered by the action of the sea and then deposited on the sea shore at high tide. Have a look at this blog for a better explanation and more information....
