A Walk from Stonehaven Harbour to Dunnottar Castle on the East Coast of ...

Today is the first day of OH’s 2 week holiday. By 10.30 am he was working…downloading forms to claim some fees from the NHS…honestly! So, after a very strict ticking off, and after I had set his email to holiday message mode…off we went on our planned day-trip to Stonehaven. It’s only about 50 miles up the coast, but we’d never been…tut tut..I know, lazy.

So, the purpose of the visit was to have lunch at a nice cafe in the harbour and then to walk to the Castle at Dunnottar. http://www.dunnottarcastle.co.uk/

Would you like to come along?……..here we go!

This is the view I had from my seat in the cafe courtyard overlooking Stonehaven beach on one side and the harbour on the other….food was good, I had smoked haddock fishcakes and OH had Cullen Skink, yum!

The footpath begins right in the town and takes you up a steep bank. This was about half way up the bank….

Here’s a view from a little higher up…of Stonehaven beach….

….and of the Harbour we had just left….

This is the footpath we were on, just a couple of miles I think, and you can just see the castle in the distance.

There were loads and loads of wildflowers. Some I didn’t recognise. I couldn’t take pics of them for you as OH would have been tut tutting ;). But at one bay we passed, nature had been doing her own colour co-ordinating. all the flowers were shades of white…here they are..lots of Astilbe in there….

…..and here’s a wider view of the flowers and the bay.

Getting closer to the castle now. The path is up and down a bit and the cliffs to the right are quite steep, so no dancing up here, just keep on the path and hope no gusts of wind take you over!

Here’s the Castle entrance taken from a distance with zoom….

And here’s the amazing dramatic view of the cliffs leading to the Castle….

A fishing boat passed us by…..incidentally, there are loads and loads of birds here and in the spring you can see puffins here.

Here’s the start of the steps down to the castle..

On our way back I took a picture of these thistles for you. So many wildflowers and grasses….It was a beautiful walk and I hope you enjoyed your glimpses!

Ah, glad you enjoyed it Michaella. Don't think there'll be any more holiday day trips with the weather :( btw, I would gladly donate it to the Africans...start praying and I'll join you...you never know! ;)) x

Thank you everyone. Yes, weather not bad at all yesterday...today the rain starts!....Lulu, the dogs would have loved it, there were quite a few dogs on the path but I was glad we didn't take Molly, she would have been wanting to chase the rabbits over the cliffs! Sandra, it is an amazing ruin isn't it. It was used in the film of Hamlet with Mel Gibson.

5 Jul, 2011

Oh dear, I didn't take the dogs to North Devon for that very reason.

5 Jul, 2011

What a lovely blog Karen, wonderful views. I love castles and ruins, Imagine having a small part of that in your garden.

5 Jul, 2011

Mmm....there's a thought Annie!

Lulu, sometimes is really good to get away for a walk WITHOUT a dog! When Molly is with us, she is always the focus of our attention!

5 Jul, 2011

Thanks Karen, enjoyed your day. Those green cliffs on the way to the castle were amazing. Hope OH is in holiday mode now.

5 Jul, 2011

Well, if it weren't for his Mother being in hospital Dawn.....sigh! :) Thanks!

5 Jul, 2011

Oh no Karen, don't say your holiday plans are dashed but hope mother-in-law isnt too ill.

5 Jul, 2011

Holiday is on hold...nothing planned anyway Dawn so no problem. Minor Heart attack requiring surgery I'm afraid, so not the best, but should be fine in a few weeks time I hope. Thanks :)) x

5 Jul, 2011

Oh crikey, lots of hospital visits for you then. I'm relieved for you and OH that she is on the road to recovery.
I always think a couple of weeks off work, waking up in the morning, knowing you don't have to go to work is so lovely, even if you're not away from home.

5 Jul, 2011

Yup, I agree....that's my life ALL the time! :))

5 Jul, 2011

that is a beautiful walk Karen, loved it, glad you managed to get out for a day. I am busy trying to catch up, been out in garden and not on computer for last day or so. It looks amazing. Hope Joyce is feeling a little better and keep Scott off that computer for the next few days at least. xx

Karen are you having problems with GOY today? I can't access a lot of my tabs

6 Jul, 2011

I am having problems too Annella, it keeps coming up and saying they have a problem with the site. I am having to go through Karens pages by photographs it is a pain. Cannot get on any of her pages any other way.

Same here Olive, glad it's not just me

6 Jul, 2011

Boys must have been working on it . It seems fine now, just a bit slow. Sorry this is my first visit today...been prepping the kitchen, dining room and conservatory for painting...:(( What else do you do when it's pouring with rain and your OH is on holiday? lol....no rude remarks please, 19 year old in residence remember!! ;))

6 Jul, 2011

Love it ... I would quite like to be in pic 3 right now ... it's just my kind of place! Enjoy the time with Scott ... even if does involve decorating. Wishes for a speedy recovery for your m-in-law too. : o ))

Thanks Shirley.

Remember going to Dunnotar Castle years and years (and years) ago - so atmospheric. The imprisonment of the Covenanters sounded so barbaric.

10 Jul, 2011

How did I manage to miss this? What a gorgeous walk, Karen . . . really enjoyed it. In fact I'm going to do it again, lol. Thanks for your lovely pics, and hope you can enjoy the rest of OH's holiday if the weather improves.

10 Jul, 2011

Karen, I really loved your photos and the ability to join in your walk as in real life it would be quite an impossibility for me to climb hills and stairs to get such gorgeous views. You sure do find some beautiful places to visit...and your lunch in the cafe sounds delicious too. I have no idea what the meal was that Scott had though?

We've got rain here today...no outside jobs will get done yet again :( Enjoy your decorating holiday!!!

I hope your mother-in-law is improving with each passing day and makes a full recovery...amazing that some years ago there were no known treatments for heart conditions via surgery...the medical field has progressed so much.

10 Jul, 2011

Fond memories of Stonie Karen and where I lived and was married .

MY Dh on hols too.

Tomorrow we are heading to see the tall ships hope it stays dry.

10 Jul, 2011

lol...auntie J...Cullen Skink is Smoked Haddock Chowder...soup with loads of cream..yummy!! MIL is doing fine. They decided in the end to change her medication, but not to operate. We have no idea what was wrong in the end as they discharged her before anyone had bothered to tell her...yes, really. So now the Dr. has to come and do a home visit to tell her what the test results were....makes me really want to get private health insurance! Our hospital is a really horrid place.

10 Jul, 2011

That is not the kind of attention you want....being sent home without proper diagnosis/treatment information. I hope she will be ok without the surgery.

That Smoked Haddock Chowder sounds delicious :) It would be something my hubby would really enjoy as he always chooses Smoked Haddock from our fish lady who comes once a week to our neighbourhood...straight from the wholesale fish markets in Fleetwood.

10 Jul, 2011

Sorry, I had missed your blog somehow. I spend a lot of time in Stonehaven doing work and have spotted at least one house of one of our customers. It's a lovely place and despite the weather I feel very fortunate to spend so much time there.

10 Jul, 2011

That's OK poodle. I am so glad you saw it and your client's house!

10 Jul, 2011

Meant to ask, did you see the plant nursery up on the hill before you go down to the castle? I've never been in it but I know the elderly man and his wife that own it. They sell very hardy plants, I believe. And did you smell the wild garlic? You may have, at the bottom of the footpath, there is lovely woodland not far away full of it.

10 Jul, 2011

Oh, well...no....and...no! How did I manage to not see a plant nursery? That's incredible! Perhaps a bit late in the year for the wild garlic.

10 Jul, 2011

Well, you might have an excuse to go back sometime:-) The garlic is still quite pungent, although it's quite late in the season. I could still smell it last week. If you come in spring you see a field of daffodils on the hill nearer Aberdeen. Behind Stonehaven is the Urie Estate, which is unfortunately private, but so beautiful with lovely lakes and dense rhododendrons and an old high stonebridge and plenty of wild flowers. It's like entering another world...

10 Jul, 2011

Sounds lovely poodle....you obviously love it here. I'm ashamed to say it is my first visit to Stonehaven in the 24 years I've lived here.....it will be 24 years on Wednesday in fact, half my life!....I think I should have some sort of a marker for that don't you....mmmmm....thinks.....

11 Jul, 2011

I love it, but sometimes I grudge the weather and being so far away from my mum. I'll be in Germany on holiday on the 5th August when I've lived in Aberdeen for 15 years. Now, that is when it gets complicated....You could always plant a tree to mark the occasion;-)) Anyway, whatever you decide to do, have a happy time!

11 Jul, 2011

I nearly missed this blog, so glad I didn't, what a wonderful walk, thank you so much for putting it on here. I have been looking for a place on the mainland where I can see puffins from - many many thanks.

It looks just a perfect place - nice lunch, sea, lovely views, wild flowers and a castle - it has everything!

12 Jul, 2011

So glad you enjoyed it Sticki. I think that late spring...perhaps May...is the best time to see the Puffins, but I would check that out before travelling!

12 Jul, 2011

Who would you check with? Is there a tourist information in the town that could tell me?

12 Jul, 2011

Just googled ...height of the breeding season is June. They start arriving in March and the season ends altogether in August, but we didn't see any...well....I thought I saw one to be truthful, in flight, but that was very fleeting! It flew toward the cliff face, out of sight! I suppose there might be info at the tourist info..yes, there is one in the town. Just found these lovely pics for you...http://philhart.com/gallery/Scotland_2005/puffins/

12 Jul, 2011

You are kind, thanks Karen.

12 Jul, 2011

Oooh, now that I think about it, the place to ask would probably be the Scottish Wildlife Trust people at Montrose Basin..which is quite near Stonehaven...let me see...
http://www.swt.org.uk/visit/visitor-centres/montrose-basin-visitor-centre/ I bet that would be worth a try, it is a very popular place with twitchers!

12 Jul, 2011

Those are fabulous pictures - I would love to see those.

12 Jul, 2011

Fabulous walk, glad I check back on my favorites!
