Especially for Hywel...An afternoon at St Andrews Botanic Gardens

Yesterday a friend and I visited St Andrews Botanic Garden. I haven’t been for…must be 10 years anyway. So, firstly we visited the Cacti House….it was sooooo amazing. Best Cacti house I’ve ever seen. Some of them were HUGE! So I had to put all the pics on for Hywel, especially as he has the builders in!

Next, the alpine house….and again, the best display of alpines I’ve ever seen. two lovely raised borders, either side of the glasshouse, with some nice troughs in the centre. What a great way to display alpines!

We didn’t have much time left, but we did have a quick look at the meadow garden and the herb garden. Next time I will see the scree, the herbaceous, the pond and the woodland gardens! There’s never enough time to see a whole botanic garden in one day is there!

Oh, and while I was there I actually saw that horrid plant that I pulled out of my garden last week….the one that was sold to me as Solanum Crispum Glasnevin…the one with the horrid flowers that I was so upset with. And it turned out to be…..Euonymus Europaeus….so if I’d left it in, it would have been beautiful come the autumn time…..typical!! :((

I was there in 2009: we were staying in a house which backed onto the path running behind the gardens so we went every day. What a fab place it is! I got talking to the head gardener and got a guided tour behind the scenes. Got some lovely photos.

What fabulous cacti, Karen....the only one that I thought was a bit 'creepy' was the one that was flat on to the soil and had 'fingers' going in a few directions (not sure how else to describe it).

Hywel will be in his element when he views your photos :)

I like the alpen house, how neat. Saw cacti while in Stanton house towards the new forest but they where nothing like these. I bet St Andrew's is up north. Will have to look it up!

I thought the alpine house was brilliant aswell. I always want to grow more alpines. I'll have to get down to it.

Glad you liked it everyone! Yes, "up north" Sue! :))

Hywel, they were so fantastic. Of course, in your house they would never be able to get to this size, but when you see them really big like this, they really are fabulous. I loved the one with the amazing flower that looks like a starfish or something, and the 'ginger' one!
