Glendoick Gardens 19th May 2011

Yesterday Kath (Scotkat) and I went to visit Glendoick. The plan was to have lunch, then look around the GC, then the Gardens. We managed to stick to the plan, and I only bought a Eucalyptus Gunnii to plant in the pot that was recently vacated by my once lovely (and very very expensive) but now very dead standard Holly (still very upset with myself about the holly – shouldn’t have bought it, it hardly ever works out for me when I spend a lot of money on a plant!).
I took a few pics in the gardens, I expect Kath will do a blog as she took loads more than me. This was Kath’s first ever visit. Unfortunately we had left it a bit late to see the Rhodys. There was a lot of evidence of hard pruning of some large shrubs after the winter, especially the Camellias, and some of the rhody’s were very dead looking, but I guess they have left some of them to see if they will regrow at all. So sad to see big rhody’s that have been there for many years having to be replaced, but that’s nature.
Here is a pretty pink Rhododendron that was catching some rays….

And a huge orangey one in amongst all the trees…

I think this is Enkianthus….again, a large shrub in the garden….

A lovely Cream coloured rhody..this one was really huge.

Acer Griseum among bluebells

Close up of the bark

Unidentified shrub…any ideas?

Beautiful tree in the Carse of Gowrie looking from the gardens, but using zoom lens…

We had a great time and the weather was kind to us…thanks again for a lovely day out Kath!

What a lovely day out for you both, Karen. Great pics too - love the the pink rhodo in the sunshine! My Enkianthus is in a pot (because it's an acid-lover), I think it's mainly grown for its autumn colour.

Great pics Karen....it's such a treat when I can see the gardens visited by you all from the comfort of an armchair ! Another one to go on the list... 'to visit'.

OH yes Judy, it's definitely worth a visit, but a little earlier...about the start of May or end April I think.

Yes, it's lovely Paul. It's quite high on the hillside, so when you are up amongst all the huge rhodies, ferns etc. you feel as though you are actually in the himalayas.....well, as I imagine it would be there, I mean I haven't actually been to the Himalayas! lol

What a special day for you to meet up and enjoy the Glendoick gardens together. I hope to see my Acer griseum looking like this one day. The foliage on mine at the moment is very nice. Must take a pic. Thanks Karen, enjoyed your blog.

Appreciate the photography taken on your day out which you so obviously enjoyed. Can`t identify the shrub but it does remind me of a Daphne.

It was really quite big Stroller and it didn't have a discernable scent. I shall look it up on their website...they probably sell it!

Sounds like a wonderful place to visit, so pleased you both had a good time.

I think the shrub was a kind of Deutzia perhaps. Thanks DD, it was a lovely day, I think it was the last day before all the winds started!
