Alnwick Castle Gardens and RHS Harlow Carr

Back in 2009, before I joined GOY, Rachel and I took a trip to England for a family wedding. The first night we stayed in a hotel in Alnwick and we had a couple of hours at Alnwick Castle Gardens. The most impressive things about Alnwick are……the water features…

The Restaurant, shop and visitors centre, the rose garden, the Tree House, and the amazing cherry tree walk. I would like to go back one day in spring to see it when it is all blossom an tulips!

The next day we drove to Harrogate where we booked in to a B&B and went to see RHS Harlow Carr. We waited about 40 minutes for a table in the famous Tea Rooms for lunch, but it was worth it. The whole garden was beautiful and as with all gardens, I wanted to go back and see it at different times of the year. The highlights at this time of year were the borders, the specimen trees and the Dahlias growing in the raised beds.

Catalpa Bignoides…Indian Bean Tree

And the next day we drove to Retford, Notts. for the wedding of my half-sister Sarah and Kevin’s wedding. Here is Sarah with her Dad and behind is my other half-sister Sammie.

And here’s the travellers with Mum and my Stepdad, Paul.

It was a long time ago now…but I found the photos and thought they would make a nice summertime blog to cheer us all up!

Lovely photos Karen, that water feature is amazing. I would love to go to Harlowe carr, think I might have to write a list out for weekends away.
Was your sisters wedding an 'outside' do? It looks like you all had a great day :o))

Thank you Karen. What a beautiful wedding dress, and love the Fairy Ring too! I've heard of Betty's tea room, but was too young to eat cake (I was born in Harrogate - and can drive my sons mad by talking "Yorkshire")!

Sheila, how can anyone ever be too young to eat cake....well, unless you are a babe in arms of course, even then you get it via your mum!!

Thanks Annie, yes, it was outside. We went in for our meal, but the ceremony was in a small pavilion in the gardens. The weather was very obliging thank goodness!

Thanks Yorkshire and Stickitoffee....I couldn't remember the name of Betty's for the life of me! It's so simple and yet I always forget it!

Since we were there, they have opened up the new education centre at Harlow Carr. Harrogate is a beautiful place and some good shops too!

How good to see lush green grass, beautiful full borders and the feeling of warmth almost comes through the screen ! Lovely blog, Karen. So glad to see this. : o )

I'll have to go back one day . . . my brother lives in Settle, but I don't think that's anywhere near!

I love waterfeatures, and Harlow Carr is absolutely stunning. These two are now on my Bucket List! Thank you Karen.
Lovely bride and very unusual dresses, unconventional but I love them! You have a pretty daughter with sunny hair. We are an auburn family.

Oh thanks Shirley, I'm so glad you managed to absorb some of that summer!

Sheliabub....Settle can't be THAT far from Harrogate can it....? A lot closer than Carnoustie anyway! ;)

Thanks Tetrarch. Must say, I thought the wedding dress was lovely too. It was a red, black and white themed wedding. Rachel loved her black and cream dress and has worn it a few times since.

Sheilabub, Paul and I went on the Settle to Carlisle train when we had a long weekend up in Yorkshire it was absolutely amazing that train journey, there was snow, just a light covering and it was truly amazing, the scenery was to die for. We enjoyed it so so much we love that area.

betty's also have a tea shop in york ~ the cakes are worth travelling a very long way for! they also have a cookery school which i would love to go to but its very pricey!

i loved those little silvery toadstools/fairy ring do they sell them?

5 Feb, 2011

Thanks Janey, you are kind....I binned that dress after I washed it, it was totally useless, couldn't take an iron and creased all over it. Luckily it wasn't expensive :)

Thanks Bloomer, you are fortunate to live near such lovely places.

Sticki, I loved the toadstools too! I don't know whether they sell them...try googling garden toadstools and see if they come up.....

We visited Alnwick on a borders holiday with friends. Didn't get round as much as you did Karen as it bucketed down while we were there. We saw the water falls and the lovely rose garden. Even in the rain it was very impressive. Love to go back there but not possible any longer.

10 Feb, 2011

Well, I'm glad it brought back memories for you dorjac, even if they were of rainy days!

I lived in Harrogate for 5yrs (this was20yrs ago)and worked at The Royal Bath Hospital (which sadly doesn't exist any more). This backed on to the beautiful Valley Gardens, which in those days was the venue for the Harrogate Spring Flower Show. We were fortunate enough to have a sneak ...and free!.. ..preview ,as long as we pushed one of the patients round in a wheelchair,-which in it'self was a pleasure. The show (and the autumn version ) is now held at the Yorkshire Showground... I cannot recommend these shows highly enough.
I love Harlow Carr ,but must confess that I have only been on a couple of occasions,... hard to believe when just on the doorstep for all those years! Brilliant blog Karen ,thanks for sharing those special times with us :)
