I have used a pretty variagated Ivy and Parthenocissus to do this job in my garden, plus I have a wisteria vine growing up 1 wall. Clematis would look pretty too if the situation is right, The advantage of the Ivy is that it is evergreen and you've got coloured foliage all year.

I have a Ceanothus which is full of small blue flowers at this time of the year. Cotoneaster has an interesting herringbone growth pattern and produces attractive berries. Neither are climbers but can cover a wall and there are evergreen varieties of both.
