Bird hospital....

UPDATE….
5th Sept 11pm ….Our little bird has shut his eyes for the last time. 8-((((((

We’ve been really lucky this year, collared doves have been nesting in our bird tree-houses since early summer. We’ve grown accustomed to each other in the garden and we feed them nuts, grains, scraps etc. They have full use of the facilities…running water for drinking and bathing from the stream, and two tree-houses for nesting and feeding.

However, we weren’t expecting them to become quite so*’At Home’* as they have obviously become. This little guy had been wandering around us in the garden for several hours today,we just were’nt prepared for what came next!

He checked out the greenhouse, then the garden room and then proceeded to walk straight down the garden path and enter the house porch and straight into the kitchen. It had become obvious by then that the poor liitle thing was injured in some way, we thought perhaps it was an injury to his wing as he seemed unable to fly.

As luck would have it, I had been given a large parrot cage a few months ago. I’d been hoping to keep canaries or finches but hadn’t actually gotten around to doing anything about it. So, out it came, I placed him in the cage on an old towel, then put some grains and water down for him.

I didn’t have the heart to put him outside and leave him to nature, so I’ll let him rest overnight and see how he is in the morning. He’s sleeping now so let’s hope he picks up with some rest.

Yes Clarice, he's very young. He's not doing very well actually...he can't seem to get up, and he's loosing his balance. I gave him some water from a dropper which he swallowed, but he dosn't look right at all. 8-(((

JJ be very careful about your peanut source a lot have alfla (think thats the right word )toxin in them which builds up in birds systems and eventually kills them, not agood idea for your garden birds! there are sources which are free of it but generally I'd advise not feeding them to birds at all, Your young un may be suffering from something else though, hope it pulls through, collared doves do get very friendly and will put up with us quite well if fed regularly!
The toxin is in the skins i think so skinned peanuts are safe!

5 Sep, 2009

Indy, I've removed the peanuts altogether yesterday. I hadn't realised that my husband had put them down for him, I don't like to put them down whole because the fledglings can choke on them. I didn't know about the alfla though, thanks for the info.Wish there was something that I could do for him, he looks so sorry for himself. 8-(((

The doves that come to my garden dont touch the peanuts if i think about it, but they eat bird seed for fun.

5 Sep, 2009

Tell me about it, we get through whole bagfuls of seed, they're heavy feeders alright!

5 Sep, 2009

Thats true, plus all the other birds feeding aswell, as the starlings, can eat loads of seed aswell, i'm thinking of getting a 25ltr sack of seed as it works out no about same price if not cheaper and get it delivered,as it gets heavy carrying backs of seed form wilko's every week.

i think hes only a baby to, is his mum not aorund JJ, poor little mite

5 Sep, 2009

Theres a possibility he's been shot with an air rifle, he doesnt look too young, I dont think they get the collar in their first year( i may be wrong) wheres the other one? if the pair arent together one may have died (shot ) probably and this one if not shot could be pining to death, they mate for life and are very very dependent on each other.

5 Sep, 2009

how sad indy, hope its not been shot,, poor thing,

5 Sep, 2009

I can't see any sign of shot Indy, there's no sign of his partner or a parent, the others that come are all in their pairs. I'm quite concerned now as he doesn't seem to want even water and is just lying there, but I'll keep trying.

5 Sep, 2009

Any advice is very welcome GOY'ers!

5 Sep, 2009

you said he was falling over JJ, is he still doing that, i know birds can have strokes like us, i remember years back my budgie was like that and couldnt stand and didnt want to eat, the vet said he had a stroke,

5 Sep, 2009

Poor little chap, last year a blackbird flew into our window and lay like a dead thing. We put him in a box in the spare bedroom, fearing the worst. Right as rain the next morning. Sometimes they just need rest and quiet, let's hope that's all it is in this case:-)

5 Sep, 2009

San, he's just lying there on his side, can't get up at all.
BA... I'll be surprised if he lasts until tomorrow to be honest. I'll continue giving him drops of water and see how we go.

5 Sep, 2009

it sounds like a stroke JJ, thats exactly how my budgy went, hope im wrong but does sound like it :o(

5 Sep, 2009

You may well be right San, will keep you posted. x

5 Sep, 2009

Ok I will San, Thanks x

5 Sep, 2009

your an angel JJ, take careX

5 Sep, 2009

I hope he recovers he might after a rest, shock is possible with birds as with us.
The RSPB advise is to buy peanuts (good sauce of Fat) from a reputable sauce so as to be Aflatoxin free. Whole nuts only in the winter - for tits sparrows etc. In summer peanuts can damage fledglings. Another thing is net bags should not be used as birds can get badly damaged by them. Good luck.

5 Sep, 2009

Drc,,,I didn't know any of that, thankyou!
San,,,,I'm no angel ;-)))

Thanks Indy, it's just the way he came to me and into the house......maybe he just wanted shelter, it really touched me. Do birds get reborn too?

7 Sep, 2009

All sentient beings gain rebirth and if it was around you and your Buddhas AND sought shelter in your house , then I would say it has a very good chance of being reborn into the human realm and possibly into your family somewhere, watch out for its coming ! and teach it well, for it has a long way to fly yet!
Namaste

7 Sep, 2009

Thanks for that, I'll be aware and await his return. Namaste

7 Sep, 2009

It is in the "bardo" state described in the tibetan book of the dead, and will begin its "rebirth" in 40 days time, though it may not be "born" again for some time after that until the right place is available to it, you may look for it for some time JJ (I waited nearly 1&1/2 years before I saw Ding rebirthed, as a human and we did recognise each other, she is now a happy healthy toddler who has forgotten me, that is the way of things , but she has a new life to live and learn in and I am sure she will make all the right choices) but when it happens you will see a sign that will tell you if you remain open to these things and actually see what you are looking at with the eyes of love!

7 Sep, 2009

My eyes and heart remain open then Indy, you must have been here many times before. Thankyou for your kind words and thoughts.

7 Sep, 2009

Yeah too stupid to do it right the first time JJ LOL!

8 Sep, 2009

Don't call my friend stupid Mister...he's just humble! 8o)))

8 Sep, 2009

You may not be an "expert " but youre one who understands.
So he came to you to live and die
Safely in your hands. x

Thanks Bonkers, feeling quite choked reading this again.
Just as a little update...I think maybe we have the other half of the pair roosting in the birdhouse.
He's always on his own, he comes for the day and enjoys the food and water we put out. :o)

19 Jan, 2010

Lovely...seeking solace..they know who cares........

19 Jan, 2010

Oh, he's very welcome to stay as long as he needs to, he's safe here and the garden is for all to share, I'm just the lucky person who gets to take care of it all. Perhaps he'll find company in the Spring!

19 Jan, 2010
