the plot thickens ...(well the paths )..

on wed Roger from the commitee phoned to say the bark that 3 plot holders including us had ordered ,free from a mate of his who has a tree felling business was being delivered tomorrow so we needed to be there as it had to be taken off the foot path as soon as poss so people could get passed, so 12 noon wheelbarrows at the ready…

while o h shovels i make sure ground is level and covered with membrane..

i then rake it level..

one of our neighbours simon noticed another mass of frogspawn in the pond..
on the left hand side i dont know if you can see it..

this bark is about 4inches thick on the ground..in between our lot hubby took same amount to brians plot for him as he was working..

it feels like axminster lol..

the patch on the left is going to be another bed..

o h also helped Linda get her share as her hubby was at work, she gave us 10 strawb plants which was good of her, i will put them in a bed on plot when we have got a bed ready to put them in,all in all we had 20 barrows each not bad for free ,just a few hours work…

on way home hubby bought me this cup and saucer,

which is now full of busy lizzies..waiting for the sunshine..

thanx tt,we did it last feb on other plot which was very heavy with weeds etc ,covered it with about 3 inches of bark and never seen a weed yet fingers x,i expected quite a few to get through, but none have i think its an easy way to cover ground quickly but everywhere should be really covered well..:o)

What a difference it's made, should stat clean and tidy for quite some time. A word of warning though, In case some of you don't know, putting fresh bark on soil that you have or intend to plant in isn't wise. It sucks out all the Nitrogen from the soil.

thank you Heron,it makes a big difference, i didnt know about that about the nitrogen i have planted some snowdrops ,fresia and lilly in a bed and covered it with bark do you think i should take it off ?..

I like your new garden carpet. It makes the place look very cosy lol. When I saw the photo of it in a mound on the path I felt like I wanted to put my hands right into it :o) Isn't it nice to get something for free.

Joanella, I wouldn't chance it even though they are bulbs. My sister once had a claggy soil so we covered the borders with my neighbour's horse muck (they use wood chip for bedding) within two years half of her shrubs died. I've seen it happen elsewhere too. I didn't realise what was the problem until I heard it mentioned on GQT.

27 Mar, 2010

i have taken it off now Heron, thank you for that info i wouldnt want to lose the bulbs i have there also i have a grapevine planted there so cheers mdear..:o)

lol Hywel it smelt lovely too but i like the smell of pine.you dont often get freebies so we were well pleased at least its getting used and not dumped somewhere..

27 Mar, 2010

There's an old saying, if you want good grapes, bury a dead sheep under it. :-)))

Just how big is your allotment, Joanella? It looks to be bigger than the two Gerry & I are sharing! I thought all allotments came in a standard size - measured in "rods" or "poles" or some other old measurement like that. But Gerry told me that on the site where we are there are differing sizes, apart from half allotments.

I like the idea of raised beds! My back would be very thankful for something higher than ground level!

28 Mar, 2010

omg Heron not heard of that one, couldnt eat the grapes then lol mind you we have a beloved rabbit in our garden planted daffs on patch they have come up a treat ..:o))
hi Balcony,i would have to ask oh for measurements , we have 2 half plots but the new one.. in this blog is bigger than our other one ,there are also all different sizes on the site but we all pay the same which i dont think is fair but cant complain as its only £20 per yr plus £5 to register,i only said today the raised bed plot is a lot better as we have been working on the low plot and my back is sore so there is a big advantage in the raised beds ..:o))

28 Mar, 2010

I'd be surprised if 'our lords and masters' it the EU would allow us to use 'Rods n' Poles' ;-))

29 Mar, 2010

not in this day and age anyway.lol :o)
