another door closes

well its a sad day for us today, our local co-op has closed,it has been here forever and now sadly no more, it was a well used shop, and the only supermarket except for a t- – - o express.it was a kind of meeting place for a lot of elderly folk who now probably have nowhere to go for a little walk and chat.i dont know why its closed but i think it had staffing problems, it will really be missed someone said it may become an indoor football hall, thats really what we need round here (not) i suppose it will become another food takeaway because we really need some more of those weve only got about 20 on the top road.

i just had time to grab a bargain last night,i got all these for £18 not for me i hasten to add ,they will do for a few birthday presents over the coming months

That is so sad.I hate to see the local community lose their facilities.I know they are dearer than the big supermarkets, but everyone isn't able to travel or drive a long way,and they are a lifeline sometimes.I also think that by the time you have taken into consideration, the cost of petrol,or bus fares, and the extra time involveed,do you really save much at all? We are lucky,as ours is 5mins walk, and has a petrol station attached,so very busy, and on a main road.Probably some of the first people to complain, will be the very ones who didn't support it in the first place...Very sad....

Its a shame 27 thousand businesses have closed in this country over the past 12 months. Hope you get another general store there.

Good old co-op!
Its quite sad to see all the local stores closing.

Oh dear...hard especially for the elderly and infirm............

What a loss for your community Joanella but the Co-op are doing well in some places. They have just taken over our local Somerfield, done a complete revamp and very smart it is even if the choice is no greater! Our High St has a good selection of small shops and very amazingly a butchers has just opened too - you don't see many of those nowadays! Such a shame when small shops close....the sweet shop I used to take my grandchildren to for treats is now a funeral directors complete with a lovely selection of gravestones in the window! :o((

thanx sixpence its not good is it?
i know kensington, the big retail parks have really got a hold now i think...

2 Jan, 2010

thanks bb dont know what they will do now probably get carers to shop for them, then they are stuck indoors..
cant understand it lily as you say its a thriving company always has been, you dont see many butchers now do you,not a nice swap for you was it sweets for gravestones....

2 Jan, 2010

Can't say the grandchildren were impressed and I avert my eyes when I go past, don't want to be reminded every time I go shopping :o(((

not very nice is it,i always think of that when i see houses facing a graveyard and think i couldnt live there i would never look out of the window...

one of my hubbies x-box friends works in a co-op in brighton i think and i believe that one is going soon aswell--there is a S*merfield store near my mums which was something to do with the co-op and that one shuts in 2 weeks and is going to be S**nsb*rys ---we have a co-op near us and i think its great---hope thats not going aswell

2 Jan, 2010

i agree so do i , and not everyone drives do they hywel ? some of the big ones are hard to get to and getting on a bus with a load of shopping isnt ideal..

2 Jan, 2010

sounds like they are having a bit of a shake up or somethings going on with them, gosh i used to work in a co-op chemist lots of moons ago when they gave out stamps they were an institution, ah well never mind they will still be here after us .....i think....80s

We have a co-op here in the nearest town, and there is also one in several near-by places. They have just refurbished them all so it looks as if they will stay. I do hope so. We also have a 'small' Tesco in the nearest town but in the summer it is going to be demolished and a big one built instead. I like the small one because it is easier for me to walk around, but I think the big ones are difficult to get around.

the trouble is joanella the big stores like t.....o have free delievery which doesnt help the small stores and cheaper to if you buy alot with buy one get one etc,, the small stores dont stand a chance when bigger ones close by, for some reason our co-op does so well even with 3 large supermarkets within 5-10 mins in car,

3 Jan, 2010

I agree Hywel, we have a HUGE Tesco 3 miles away but I really hate it, far too much choice and far too big for walking round so I travel 5 miles in the opposite direction to one half the size where I can do my shopping as quickly and simply as possible. I might even start doing my main shopping in the new Coop right on my dooorstep.......still need the car to transport it though :o(((

3 Jan, 2010

glad to hear yours have been refurbished hywel, good sign they will be there a while..
yes san i dont fall for the -buy one get one free-unless i know im getting a bargain, our co-op did well too it was always busy, thats why i cant understand it..
i dont really like the big shops lily, i think you tend to pick up things you dont need and i always spend more than intended..

Oh dear, we would be lost if ours went, lucky for us we have two thriving shops, there are many pensioners living here, as the climate is good, and no hills to walk up, and so the Co-op does very well, we are joining, have the form in front of me as I type!!!! sorry that you have lost yours.

3 Jan, 2010

lot of people round here will be lost now dd glad you have a few local shops :o)

3 Jan, 2010

We have two co-ops, and lots of hairdressers and beauty shops, and all the usual bakers, butchers, Indian. Italian although we have just the high street we are well catered for here, very lucky really..

7 Jan, 2010
