plot sheds.

hi all just thought i would tell you..i went up to the allotment today & found our 2 sheds had been broken into..i had a walk round & everyones shed was open ..we had all been broken into, locks cut off the doors , & things been moved from some sheds at the back of the allotment to an empty shed at the top near the gate (i think they were going to come back for it later )

the lane with about 14 plots each with their own gates..our open plots gate is on the right..there are 15 open plots on the site..

how i found the sheds today..

i just had a quick walk round as no one was on there..

and i felt a bit nervous..

someones tools dumped here & my welly socks !!

moved on a bit & found our drawers & contents tipped on this bed..no where near our plot..

every single shed had been done, even the ones up the lane with their own gates, the plot the committe has with 3 sheds..shop, bar (for bar-b-qs & meetings) storage..tables & chairs, were all done too & each shed had 3 big locks on them.i know there are lots more important things going on at the moment but what a shame..i phoned one plotholder up to let them know about this & he is considering giving up his plot as this is the 3rd incident in 12 months,& now i dont feel safe going up there on my own & i used to love the peace & quiet..

Oh that is so sad. What are these mindless brats thinking of. I am so sorry Joan, it does make you think why do you bother, but they can't be allowed to get away with it. What are the police going to do ?

Hi Cinders..not a lot can be done, we have got the usual " crime numbers " i doubt if it will get any further than that..

11 Aug, 2011

Thats too bad.

11 Aug, 2011

I know ..i dont drive so cant keep tools etc at home,i will have to start burying them somewhere..lol

I`ve hit like automatically Joan, I dislike obviously, I would have been nervous as well, guess whoever did it was disturbed and hoping to get back later, its disgusting why folk have to do things like this, it happens all the time where my son has his allotment, he has to cart his tools backwards and forwards because he`s lost so many in this manner.
There are bad things going on but this is still a bad experience for you and I feel for you and all the others it happens to..

How about burying a small bin with a lid that maybe you could cover over in some way.

Joan, this is just a thought, but has someone got a grudge to bear??? Does someone want an allotment badly enough. (We have a two year waiting list here).. It looks like whoever is doing this is trying to scare folk off.

Was anything of any salable value taken, or real damage done.( I know what being broken into and it's consequences are). So I'm not being flippant when I ask this. (we found some of our belonging for sale in the local market, none of it of any real value)

It seems a little close to home. If gangs of local youths were involved I think they would have caused widespread damage to the allotments, sheds and would have taken anything they could sell or swap for money/drugs/alcohol.

please don't let whoever this is stop you from enjoying your peace and quiet. it's unlikely that they will be around during daylight hours...people who do this are basically cowards.

Perhaps, you could arrange to meet another holder there, so that you are not alone. Try to persuade the other person not to give up, if he does then whoever is carrying out this mindless intimidation has won.

Try and get the other allotment holders to lobby the council, you all pay for your allotment and to give up would cause them loss of revenue. I'm sure you have all invested a lot of time, money and energy into your allotments. And they are your landlords and you surely have a right to be protected!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stand up for your rights......

I wish I had an allotment.............

Hi & thanks Lincs, i dont "get it " there is not going to be anything of value on an allotment, all that was missing from ours was a new portable heater..but to do all the sheds..must have took some time.I feel for your son having to take tools back & forth..
Cinders, that would be ok for small gardening stuff i suppose..i would prob forget where i buried it..

Hi Grannyb, thanks for your comments..we are not council run but self governed so cant go to anyone..sometimes thats good other times not.we dont know exactly what has gone from most plots as quite a few are on hols..i do know somone has lost a push mower..he cuts his paths.someone else had a drawer set like ours taken full of tools.i do take your point about a grudge & someone wanting a plot though ,i dont know how long the waiting list is timewise but there are a few hundred on our list ,last year we all had lots of stuff taken, however he did get caught,we got about £20 back at £5 per month.

Oh Joanella! I'm so sad to read this, I know what your allotment means to you. For them to take the time to do this to so many sheds as well... it beggars belief. They would never come during the day, Joanella, they would be the ones who were frightened! They're giving scum a bad name. Take care Joanella, I'll be thinking of you!x

Thank you Libet,i wouldnt think they would be frightened of a woman on her own locked in..i will see how it goes in the next few weeks..:o))

fPointless vandalism yet again, Joan! Do you think bolt-cutters were used on the shed locks ... pity you can't paint some anti-hooligan paint around the sheds ... our village football club has done this ... a sign has to be displayed warning that it's in use and ... so far ... no more vandalism in the ground or clubhouse ..... Wasn't it water butts stolen off the plots last year? I hope folk don't give up their plots ... though I can unerstand their reasons for doing so ... a sad day for you ... :o(((

This is so sad .... why are there so many selfish unkind people in the world ???

11 Aug, 2011

Sorry to hear about the break- ins at your plot. Last year was bad at our plot in Dundee, there was some sheds burnt to the ground and lots of vandalism. Our own greenhouse had a trailer rammed into it. This year hasn't been so bad. All i can say is don't give up, you deserve your peace and quiet. I know I would be lost without my plot.

Hi Shirley, yes it must have been bolt cutters, & yes pointless, as i walked on to our plot & saw the sheds open Shirley i cant tell you the words i was saying to myself..they were not nice.mostly began with b.. f..c..g..h..x.. lol.. not funny though.fencing around plots up the lane has anti vandal paint & spikes on it..obviously not working ,unless they are coming on from houses that back on to the plots, last year every thing that wasnt nailed down went, including a plastic greenhouse that was screwed into a wooden base it was lifted over the fence!!
Hi Tt, i know but hey there are worse things that happen at sea,we have to get over it..as OH says " its only an allotment " i say that to him when he gets a spirit level out to measure the hight of a piece of wood for a bed..lol. :o)

11 Aug, 2011

Hi Lilyanne, sorry to hear about your troubles on your plot last year, wow that is bad..burning the sheds down, & ramming a trailer into your greenhouse i think that would have been enough for me..but you are right ..i would be lost without my plots.. btw my Oh comes from your neck of the woods :o)

we think it was gypsies ........................
i so hope its sorted , do u have a n. watch it looks near houses are u able to have lights that come on ........... we have a solar one that's brill . sometimes the fact a light pings on is enough to scare them of , it worked for us in the house !!!

12 Aug, 2011

What is happening all these horrid folks doing horrid things. :(((

12 Aug, 2011

Mavis, thank you for your kind words..
Hi Cristina, cant believe they took your tree..shame you had to sell it..i dont know if the area has a n.watch scheme but your solar lights are a good idea..something to think about,we have been asking for cameras on the lane for ages now, maybe with the committe sheds being done we will get them..
Clarice..i dont know but we cant let these things get us down its just not worth it ..

12 Aug, 2011

def get the light , it does help ............ and a camera , even a dummy one , locate it under the light...... and put notices around saying there is ctv video .............. at least it looks like someones watching !!

12 Aug, 2011

Lol Cristina..big brother is watching you...good ideas though thanx..:o)

12 Aug, 2011

Sorry to hear about the shed breakins on your allotment, Joanella. You know the same thing happened to our shed some months ago, although in our case no more harm than a broken window was done.

In the year & a half I've worked on Gerry's plots there don't seem to have been any damage done. I've not heard of anybody's tools being taken or there plots damaged. This year there has been a big increase in the number of people on the allotment field due to the town council splitting up all vacant plots into half plots.

I can really sympathise with you.

Thanks Balcony, lots of things taken all taken away in peoples wheelbarrows.worse one was old Berts spirit level..his dads..he has had it 60 yrs & not worth anything to anyone else..its all taken to sell on car boots we think..most of our plots are only half plots.lots more new friends for you to get to know then on your site, thats good..:o)
