A non gardening blog, as can't do much in the garden at the moment

Hello everyone. I’ve been away for a while for a number of reasons. The most stupid one being I got a new computer, then couldn’t remember how to find all my old sites! duh, put it down to a woman of a certain age. Either that, or I really have killed all my brain cells with white wine!!
I also had to have some pretty heavy surgery over Christmas – yeup Christmas day in hospital, which was a bit surreal – and the upshot is NO DIGGING or other heavy work, THIS YEAR!!! Great if you’re the sort of person who is either gardening or making glass things and selling them on a market stall – plenty of heavy lifting there!
Anyway, I am quite happy getting lazy and fat!, but as I haven’t much gardening news for you all, (well the terrace is just about finished, and will put some pics up of that when it stops raining), I thought I’d pop some pics up of the sort of non gardening work I do. Annella and one or two others did ask for some piccies, so here they are.

This is a stall I did, where I just sold the coasters, plates and dishes I make.

This took me about a week to make. I had to cast the dots, then score and break out the discs for the plates. Each plate has 2 layers of glass. Then I had to fuse the discs and spots together and then I had to slump the glass circles into a plate mould. Fusing takes place at around 800C, whilst slumping is a little cooler at 660 C. The nerve racking bit, is then drilling the holes through the centre of the plates, to put cake stand bits on. It is quite easy to break them at this point and then several days work goes down the swanny. But, I like spotty things and cake! What more can I say.

These pendants can also take several days to make. I have to make the background glass pendant, before I fuse the enamel design on the top. Another artist makes the enamel designs, but each pendant is unique, as I can’t make exactly the same background again.

When I get the enamel designs, they don’t come as a complete picture, I make up my own pictures from the work she sends me.

I wanted to create a watery look, this took 3 different layers of glass, before the enamel design was fused on.

This black plate has dichroic glass squares on it. As the light hits it, each square changes colour. It’s quite dramatic.

There you have it. A non gardening blog, showing you a little of what I do when not in the garden
Bye for now Jane x

This is me and Ram on a pub ride. He loved those and always waited patiently whilst I had a glass of wine.

This is Victoria (my sister) warming up before an event on Kipper, a horse she bred. Well not personally of course, both her children only have 2 legs. Lol

This is Ram outside the stables my sister uses.

Victoria and Bella outside the members tent at badminton last year. The weather was so bad, it was cancelled this year :(

Oh that could be me, with a Pimms. lol and yes I do have bags under my eyes. so would you if you’d slept in a horse lorry for the last 3 nights Jx

Fantastic Jane, and real work of art you clever girl, and the patience you must need to do it. Hope you will soon be well again.

7 Jun, 2012

Aw thanks Cinderella. I don't think of it as patience, because I love doing it. Jx

7 Jun, 2012

Wow, love your works Jane!! Simply fantastic!

Thank you for your kind comments, it's nice to hear you like it all. Jx

Oh you`ve been having it rough again Jane, I hope its onwards and upwards now, you take care and ease yourself gently forwards the garden and glassware won`t go anywhere and our health has to come first.
Your glassware is beautiful, I love the pendants and really like the black plate. Good to see you back, take care and thankyou for showing your work...

7 Jun, 2012

Thanks Lincslass. I'm probably the healthiest, unhealthy person you will ever meet. Now that they have sorted out the last round of problems, it's onwards and upwards. Oh - giggle, don't want to go too far upwards do I? Shall settle for onwards then. Jxx

one very very talented lady, hope you can get back to garden soon, take care and no heavy lifting,

7 Jun, 2012

LOL,Onwards it is then..

7 Jun, 2012

Brilliant !

7 Jun, 2012

Fabulous work, Jane! I love glass, it's the way you can see all the way into its depths...

You must have had a pretty rough time but you are obviously looking on the bright side! Craft fairs with no lugging!! How did you manage that??? lol!

The medicinal properties of white wine are quite miraculous...keep it up!! :)) x

7 Jun, 2012

I love your glass especially the pendants, hope you are improving and feeling better

7 Jun, 2012

I found your artwork facinating Jane, I think my favourite was the mermaid.
Hope your health is improving day by day, and it would be nice if a little sunshine could come your way.

7 Jun, 2012

Thanks all. OOOH sunshine, just remind me, what is that. I know we have had some lovely sun this year, but with all this miserable, cold, heavy rain, it seems a life time away.
It is nigh impossible to do a stall without lifting Karen, but the guys in the market where I work are great and have been carrying all the stuff in for me. Still finding 3 stalls a week a bit hard going. It's not just the selling it, it's the making it as well. Jx

7 Jun, 2012

Everything you've shown is beautiful! And so much more interesting than the things I do when I'm not gardening ...... well, some things. ;o)

8 Jun, 2012

excellent blog..loving the cake stand too..

8 Jun, 2012

Lol :)) and thank you for the lovely comments. I've been on this forum for a couple of years now and the people on here are just so warm, friendly and nice. It makes such a wonderful change from the outside world, where folks can be so rude and abrasive. Honestly, i've never come across a snide comment here, let alone any unpleasantness. Just goes to show, what great folks gardeners are.
Thank you all for being such lovely people. Jx

8 Jun, 2012

It's nice to have another hobby aswell as gardening. I enjoy the garden, but I would be bored if it was the only thing in my life.

I make pottery things on a wheel, but it's all on stop at the moment, because my pottery-making shed (i.e. old garage lol) is being renovated.

Your work is wonderful :o)

8 Jun, 2012

Thank you Hywel :) and yes it is nice to do something besides gardening - much as I love gardening! Jx

8 Jun, 2012

beautiful work ...especially love the cake stand and the black plate it is striking ..........a very talented lady !!!
take care of your health and don't overdo things :)))

8 Jun, 2012

Beautiful work Jane, your so talented. Absolutely love the cake stand. Your heart must be in your mouth when its time to drill the holes.

Hope your back to full health quickly. Take it easy, sounds like you've got some handy helpers you can shout when things need doing :)

9 Jun, 2012

Thank you. Am getting there slowly. I think it always takes longer after surgery than you think! Jx

9 Jun, 2012

Really enjoyed seeing your pieces, very nice indeed x

12 Jun, 2012

Yes, that's so true, Jane...even for minor "invasive" stuff...

...I fell down the stairs a couple of years ago...and ended up at the bottom with my ankle still at the top and facing the wrong way...:/

Oddly, enough, it was a health kick which caused it...so I've given them up...

But, after two ops...felt grey for a long time...and that was just an ankle...

Regular visits to the local Institut de Beauté helped a lot, though, at the time...Kx

12 Jun, 2012

Thank you Magnadoodle, glad you enjoyed them.
Yes I did my ankle, falling out of my sisters horse box at Badminton last year. No I hadn't been drinking, well not much - just the odd pimms! It was a nasty sprain and it was about six months before it didn't hurt any more and it still isn't right now.
As my sister is a physio and we were next to British team physio, I had excellent treatment, but at the end of the day, they couldn't undo the sprain. I had to just live with it. Jx

12 Jun, 2012

It's quite scary, how anaesthetics and the resulting inactivity can set you back...

12 Jun, 2012

Beautiful work, saw your comments on Lil's blog...so thought I'd come and check you out! I love the mermaid too and the trees. I come up to N Yorks sometimes as my folks live in Crayke!

18 Jun, 2012

Ohhhhh Jane..............Badminton................Would LOVE LOVE LOVE to go to Badminton - I ride now and again but same as gardening I am very much an amateur, but love horses..........still help out wherever I get the chance in return for a free ride :) Your sister must be VERY talented to compete at that level!!! You must let me know her name so I can keep my eye out for her......... (I sneak Your Horse Magazine into my shopping Trolley along with my Gardening Mags....much to hubbies disdain - and still have all my old Horse and Pony Fiction novels...and still add to the collection when I am charity shop shopping...) Ive waffled on as usual !! Do you ride / have horses? Would love to see some pics if you would be able to share any :) x That was lucky you had Physios nearby when you injured yourself - glad to hear you are all sorted x

18 Jun, 2012

Hi Mag and Lulu. Nice to meet you Lulu, glad you liked my stuff. Give me a shout when you are next up here. Will put the kettle on :))
Mag, although my sister does compete at a fairly high level, she is the equine physio for the British Team. She treats the horses of all the Team riders, wherever they are competing in the world. this is her 2nd olympics, she was in Hong Kong 4 years ago (which is where the equestrian part of the olympics was held).
The Yorkshire Post is running an article on her sometime soon, you know.... the day in the life of.... I will put a link on when it is published.
Both she and I have always ridden. Before I was not so well with Chronic fatigue, asthma and then the ops I had last year, I had 2 horses, both from her - ex eventers. Ramsden was a very special horse (ex race horse) and then eventer and I loved him, like one of my kids. However when I started to get poorly, he and my other horse Matty had to go back to Victoria. I am hoping my health comes back again, enough to be able to have Ram back.
Her name is Victoria Spalding, if you google her, you might find out a bit more. Horse and Hound have done a big article on her, but this was a couple of years ago.
I sometimes go with her on the events, mainly to look after her 2 small children, do the cooking etc and generally keep the home fires burning.
Will put some horsey pics up, when i can think how to get them on as 'gardening pics' lol.
I love horses too, it is awful not having one at the moment. Wel,l we have 2 small ponies which are Mick's step daughters that she has outgrown, but not quite the same thing. Jx

18 Jun, 2012

There Mag, if you scroll back up, I have put a couple of horsey pics on. Jxx

18 Jun, 2012

LoL, I live 3 miles from Badminton. Hubby manages a stud farm.....whitley stud, I think we have a whitley stud . com, so you can check us out!
I'm a mosaic artist too but at the mo am too busy chasing snakes out of my pond!
We have 5 lovely foals at foot this year, have some pics in my profile somewhere!

18 Jun, 2012

Hi Lulu yes I've heard of Whitley Stud, it's quite famous. You breed race horses yes? Am off to look at your profile and add you to my faves, so I can keep up with your news. Jx

18 Jun, 2012

!! You could check out Lou Ropner Mosaics too!
We're not hugely famous but did breed Kachit, we still have his mum here who has a very bouncy foal at foot!
I suppose I should go take a few pics and Stevie The Terrible is pestering me for some clematis photos!!

18 Jun, 2012

Hi Lulu. You will prob have heard of Ramsden's (my horse) sire. He is by Dane Hill and out of To The Limit. Classy act eh? But was never going to cut it as a top class racer, so ended up as eventer and then ended up with me, after he broke a pedal bone.
Will check out your mosaics page this evening, when I've finished planting out french beans, peas and potting on lettuce. oh and making dinner for hungrey family. Love it when the boys are back from Uni, the house becomes a tip in 30 secs and the fridge is permenantly empty. lol Jx

18 Jun, 2012

Thanks so much for posting the pics x Ram is gorgeous x I was a stable lassin a private stable during my school years working with harness racers, American Standardbreds. The ladyi worked for used to train them to the saddle for when their racing career was over x ....... Off to look for foal picsxxxxx

18 Jun, 2012

You will enjoy them Mag, they are stunning. Jx

18 Jun, 2012

We got a few Dane Hills!

18 Jun, 2012

Hope they're faster than Ram. He was trained by Willie Haggis and then John Dunlop, from Hollyhill Stud in Ireland. Sadly never lived up to his £125000 price tag. Someone lost a packet. But good for me! lol. The kindest, sweetest horse ever and not the least bit thoroughbred ish. Went out all weathers, ate anything etc. in fact it was hard to keep the weight off him - had to work him like mad, or he was a fat pig lol. Miss him like mad and get weepy whenever I talk about him. He is back with my sister, but that's not the same.

18 Jun, 2012

Aw, we do love them don't we!

18 Jun, 2012

Yeup, sure do. Am a sentimental soppy devil

18 Jun, 2012

Love all your work Jane and enjoyed the horsey talk and pics too:-)

3 Jul, 2012

Thanks BA. Am a bit thronged with work at mo, but will chat more when got through this small mountain. Jx

3 Jul, 2012

these are fabulous Jane, what beautiful things; you clever lady ~ i hope they sold well.

5 Jul, 2012

Thank you Stick.i Some days, they sell well, some days nothing sells. Did quite well yesterday, who knows what the weekend will bring. not the most reliable way of earning a daily crust! I never make 2 pieces the same - in the jewellery that is. so once they're gone, they're gone and it's onto thenext thing!
Got some new coasters in the kiln right now. Aqua streaky glass, with silver and copper fish interlaced between the layers. It's an experiment, not sure how they will turn out! Eeeek Jx

5 Jul, 2012

i cant wait to see those!

5 Jul, 2012

Ah, I see Jane! Wonderful...quite unique. I love coloured glass myself and have never seen anything quite like your work. The cake stand is immense! How much does one of those cost please...I think they would make terrific gifts...do you sell online as well?

18 Jul, 2012

That cake stand is mine Karen!!

18 Jul, 2012

Hi Karen. I don't sell online, because I have enough trouble keeping my market stall stocked. I made 2 cake stands and each one took a week. From casting the spots, cutting the glass, fusing them all together, slumping them into a plate mould and then drilling holes through the middle to put the hardware on. I can't really charge for all the time I put in, so I don't really make them to sell. Sorreeeeeeee. Besides my stall in Skipton. I do a couple of craft fairs in York from time to time. I love these because they are in the beautiful St Williams college, next to the minster. Jx
oh and it would appear Annella has claimed the blue one lol x

18 Jul, 2012

Yes to go with my very nice hand made coasters :o))

18 Jul, 2012

lol Jx

18 Jul, 2012

Bloomin heck! typical! lol...oh well! Next time I'm in Skipton Jane! :D

18 Jul, 2012

I used to go to Skipton when Al the ex worked for Peter Blacks in Keighley.

18 Jul, 2012

Just let me know Karen :-). Ummmm I remember you once said Ann, Keighley is a bit of a hole, but Skippy is okay. Not even sure if PB is still there. Jx

18 Jul, 2012

Love Skipton. Haven't been there for years and years. Best pork pies in the world and the market is brilliant.

18 Jul, 2012

I think they were taken over Jane. Derek's nickname is Skippy Lol!

18 Jul, 2012

Yeup pork pies still going strong as is the market. Fortunately, my stall is in the indoor market in the town hall. No nasty wind and rain there.

18 Jul, 2012

LOL ! :-)

18 Jul, 2012

Much better then Jane!

18 Jul, 2012

Oh fantastic work! I dont know how I didnt see this before lool! never done anything like that myself, did a little enamelling when I was at college but found it too fiddly lol great to se you enjoying your Pimms too :)

27 Jul, 2012

Yeah, love a glass of Pimms, wine, gin...........preferably not all in the same glass at the same time.
Glad you like the bits I've made. Just home from York and back there again tomorrow, so off to bed - need my beauty sleep!! Jx
