just having bad day

did midnight walk last night around barnsley to raise money for the hospice.the night was a huge success .the atmosphere was incredible.there were one thousand three hundred and fifty ladies and young girls started.did the course of thirteen miles in three hours.when i eventually got out of bed i ached all over.what a waste of a beautiful day i should have been in the garden.we did do bits in the garden before i had to stop.so we sat in the garden watching the different birds on the feeder.but just looked out of the window an hour ago to find two rats aroud the feeder.well i say around one was actually climbing up.so now we will have to take down the feeder.we really did enjoy watching the birds.

Well done, you deserve to sit and relax after that, shame about the feeder but dont blame you for removing it there are some things we definitely dont want to attract to our gardens...........

Congratulations I admire anyone that does absolutely anything for a worthy cause, I am still trying to get my courage up for a bungee jump or a parachute jump, but a walk sounds right up my street, (too bloody old to run thats fer sure.lol)

Do not lose heart about the rats, bcos exactly the same thing happened to us. Saw 2 dancing around the bird feeder one Christmas Eve & got the shock of our lives! I did stop putting a feeder out for a while, and now we have a squirrel-proof one which the rats can't climb on either luckily.
There are more of them around than people realise. We have a well-meaning neighbour who puts food on the ground for the birds and leaves it there, but he's really feeding foxes and rats. Yuk.

maybe we will try what you have done weeding, but dont they still hang about underneath, its just when the blue tits are feeding, they seem to throw it all on the floor.did they just go on their own.its just that one of our dogs can smell them and charges up n down the garden.

No, they didn't just go on their own. I asked our local "ratman" for advice (i'd already had to contact him re a big rat problem on a footpath we use to walk to school every day). Following that, because in our council area they charge now for rat treatment, we carefully placed poison ourselves, taking care to cover it etc, and check regularly to see if it was being taken. I think some areas still offer a service for free, so you can find out.
Tho I've not seen any in our garden for months & months now, I don't believe the problem will be eradicated until my neighbour stops putting out food. He's very elderly and otherwise just such a lovely man, I've decided for myself that it's not worth a rift. Fortunately for us he's 3 doors away and not directly nextdoor.
