This time of year The Garden Birds need something extra 2 keep them warm so i make Lard & Sultana cakes for them as its Cheap,Easy & they love them :)

64p for a Full Packet Of Sultanas but i used half of that = 32p
& the Lard was 28p the Whole Block 250g :)

I dont melt the Lard i just cut it into small Pieces & Rub in the Sultanas then make into 5 Balls & Flatten them to an inch deep :)

As u can see they go down a Treat :) If ud like to Know what other Foods u can safely give & Mix together for Your Garden Birds feel free to browse this Web Page http://www.a-home-for-wild-birds.com/bird-food-recipes.html

Thank Jacque this a good idea as the birds are really hungry. I am out of seed at the minute but are feeding them with any food scraps that I have. Also I took Sanbazs advice and made a ground feeding area nearer to the house as it is to slippy to venture up the garden.

Their fat balls at 50 for £6.99 is quite good but I am buying suet pellets .sunflower hearts and a seed mix from Kennedy Wild Bird Food in Peterborough~ free delivery over £50 and their sacks are up to 25 kilos| the mixed suet pellets are very popular with Robins and of course Starlings and Bluetits~

Starlings like everything i put out, dont think there is anything they dont like is there :o)))

23 Dec, 2009

So pleased to see so many of you making "bird cakes". This is my recipe:
1/2 pk lard, mix in meal worms, crushed nuts (I put them in food processor) Mixed seeds, bread pieces, grated cheese and sultanas. Yes it all costs but I get the thrill in watching them scoff the lot and then sit back to wait for more. This is in addition to traditional bird feeders filled with nuts and seeds and of course the fat balls which are sold in the shops. I am phasing the latter out as I think the home-made ones are better. John says we spend almost as much on the birds as we do our own food but he doesn't mind either. Happy Christmas to all and keeeeep feeeeeding. Love Sue xx

23 Dec, 2009

Same in our household Grannysue..feeding constantly and making lard feeds such as yours ! The birds love them ! Happy Christmas to you too !

23 Dec, 2009

24 Dec, 2009
