Computer problems AGAIN :~((

Bl@@dy things! This is the problem, once you've got a virus, so easy to shift it, inadvertently, to another pc...before you know where you are, everything you depend on has 'caught' it.

Hope both lappy and pc get well soon, and it doesn't cost you too much in 'medicine'

Sorry to hear you have both cuaght the dreaded "lurgy" Ian....that's the risk when you link machines...instant transfer of all the horrors. Hope you come back smelling of roses (got to keep the gardening theme going you know...LOL)

Hope they get fixed soon Ian, Ive just had mine rebooted, Saved my pics and passwords and went back to the begginning, Also changed Antivirus to Norton. 30days Trial.. It seems OK upto now..

While my Computer man (a great small family business) was checking that it really WAS the mouse and not a virus, (EEEEK!) I had lost my toolbars - he just went 'click' and they reappeared! Now why don't I know things like that? I felt a right fool. :-((

Thank you Spritz, I'm afraid it's my geekiness showing through. Lol ;~)) I painstakingly went through the hard drive with a fine toothed comb and some software I borrowed and turfed the whole thing out!

I've been at it for the best part of 24 hours and she complains about a (quite large) pile in the ash tray? OK the living room stank like a snug in an old fashioned pub and mabye I've been like a rag doll for most of the day but at least the virus is no more Lol.

We only ever had ONE virus on this computer & it was in our first year. We've had this computer for 7 years now & never seen a single virus after that first time. It was a D.O.S attack only we had no idea what it was or what was happening to our computer! It would work fine for a few minutes then we would get a warning that the computer was about to shut down! It shut down & rebooted several times. Having done a complete restoration of the computer back to factory setting TWICE in one day - thinking we had done something wrong the first time! Fortunately we'd only had the computer a few months & didn't have very much on it at the time.

Between reboots we got in touch with a cousin of my wife's in the Canary Islands & using the phone we managed to sort the problem out. I think the shock was so great for me that I've become paranoid over security! I change my anti virus from time to time & always make sure it's updated with the latest updates just as soon as the computer connects to the Internet! I keep my malware & adware definitions up to date as well.

I agree absolutely with you there Balcony, security has to be your first thought when you are on the net! I do exactly the same as you, keep everything up to date and running at all times. The only reason this one got through was the fact I deliberately ignored a warning about opening this particular file as it wasn't digitally signed. I thought it was just because of that and didn't really check or scan it before running it! (I was tired and it was in the middle of the night!) Of course it loaded properly and worked the pointing 'device' on the laptop and then an existing problem with the screen led me to use 'remote access' from my pc to try and fix the laptop (to get the right drivers downloaded for the screen) and the rest as they say is history!
Well if anyone else can learn from this horrible experience then at least there is a bright side to it all. Being without a pc for a couple of days has been proper miserable :~(((

It seems to have moved over!! I've got a black strip down the left side, & have to reduce the screen size to get to the scrollers on the right! Wierd!

His explanation of what happened was like gobbledy-gook to me, though - I am sooooo not techie! I lost both toolbars the other day - and my mouse went wrong - a visit to the computer man and he just pressed one key to get the toolbars back! Magic! I had to buy a new mouse, though. That was terminal! Awww....poor little thing! :-((

As they say, there's a first time for everything. I'd better be careful as well about opening files so I don't get caught out!

I will always scan any files with anti virus software first, from now on!

When you download anything from the internet it's always better to save it first. Your antivirus then has the opportunity to examine it before you open it to install it. I've been doing this for a few years now & I've never been caught out.

Besides it serves as a repository for programmes if you ever need to reinstall them again. In fact my "Downloads folder was occupying so much space that I emptied most of the programmes stored there as it's easier to download them again from the internet than go looking through all the files kept there.

My Desktop has the hard drive split into two. One side holds all the windows files etc. and the other has my downloads. I always drop files into this 'data' side and then scan them but I downloaded onto Carols laptop (bought second hand from ebay!) some drivers for her pointer and some for her screen. As I was having trouble keeping her screen on I linked to mine to use the remote access and the rest, as they say, is history! It's always the one time you let your gaurd down that things like this get through!
I suppose it all depends on how much downloading you do. I often have poorly pc's here which I repair/upgrade to give away on Freecycle and do an awful amount of driver downloading but this is the first laptop I have done and had problems finding the right drivers and ended up on an unknown (to me) site. I really should have known better but as I say it was late, I had been at it for hours and I just wanted to get finished so I could go to bed. Next time I will go to bed and finish in the morning when I'm more 'with it'!

The trouble is we men like to finish these sort of things no matter how tired we are! A woman would have better sense! LOL!

Just a thought for if you ever have problems with your desktop in the future. Just unplug the ethernet cable from the back of your unit and conect it to your laptop! Instant conection, no wireless required. :~)))

If you don't have a wireless conection for your desktop then it is plugged into the telephone socket through an 'ethernet cable' unplug this from the back of your desktop and plug it into the back of the laptop. No wireless conection needed. Lol. ;~)))

Oh, if you want to get wireless then you will need a wireless router/modem. Usually free from your broadband provider and then you need a wireless adaptor that usually plugs into a usb socket (if your laptop isn't wireless enabled!)

My laptop IS wireless enabled. So I just contact the provider & they should send me a router? Great! :~))

Depends on who you're with Marie. I used to be with Virgin and had to buy my own. Changed to O2 and free ! :~)

Ah! I'm with Virgin, but my mobiles are O2!

You could possibly find one through Freecycle. Infact I've just seen one on one of my sites. Wait here while I see if I can find it. (I might be lucky enough to get it for you! ! !)

Orange do a very cheep package (free sometimes) if you have a contract phone with them!

I changed when Virgin put it up to £ 20 per month. I got O2 for just over £12, but if you've got an O2 mobile it's cheaper still, Don't forget to give Virgin a months notice if you change. They copped me and I had to pay both for a month !! Grr :-(

If you live in an Orange 'exchange' area then it's free but we don'y so it costs us £8.70 (ish) a month. Well worth thinking about if you do need a new phone!

Orange is hopeless up here! The reception is terrible! I tried it out (and most of the others too!) I'll put a wanted ad in Freegle! :~)) I've just been sent a mobile internet 'dongle' by 02 (free, they're £30 in the shops!!) & I can use it on pay as you go, but it might be too costly!

Those dongles are really expensive on pay as you go!

If your desktop is on line then its only a matter of checking your router/modem is wireless buying a 'network adaptor' and plugging it in then setting it up!

Bob wrote a blog about something that had upset him and got a load of abuse about it! Things like "this is a gardening site" and "this is not the place to comment on it" etc. So Bob has left!
I've contacted Ajay and Peter and complained about this mob mentality and how it is costing GoY it's members. Yes this is a gardening site but there is no need for members to 'gang up' on each other. They should have flagged Bob's blog if they didn't like it.

I saw Bobs' blog and saw absolutely NOTHING wrong with it. I was totally gobsmacked by the response and will miss him greatly.

I can heartily reccomend the Norton 360, if we have the slightest problem we ring the Tech guys and they can always sort it out over the phone (well so far). It costs about £34.00 for a year well worth it I think. Glad you are sorted Ian.
