A change of user name

Posted on 3 Nov, 2009 78 comments

I want to tell everyone I have at last changed my user name to my own – ‘Hywel’

Most people call me that now, but I feel more comfortable with it made ‘official’. I think it is also less confusing for new members.

Here’s a photo of me and Blodyn. She wouldn’t keep still lol, and the sun was strong – so it isn’t a good photo sorry

\

I bought a new plant over the week end. It’s a Sarracenia.
( I said that so that this blog can go into the garden section. I wanted as many people as possible to know what’s happened, – and that’s the only category you can’t filter out.)

Here is a photo of my Sarracenia. I use plants like this to get ideas for my pottery work

Congratulations, Hywel, ow did you do that? I see that all your posts as 'Blodyn' have disappeared.

3 Nov, 2009

I deleted lots of them but many photos are still there.
They are on Blodyn's page.

3 Nov, 2009

Poor Blodyn - sidelined! Keep up the good work under your new persona Hywel.

3 Nov, 2009

Blodyn is a really beautiful cat and judging by the way she`s looking down I think she`s shy...lol! I`ve not seen a plant like that before, I hope you can get some inspiration from it.

Sandra :o)

Lol! I got totally confused there! (I know, Hywel, it doesn't take much!)
Good to see you again!! :~))

3 Nov, 2009

Hi Hywell I'm interested that you do pottery any pics? and how does the plant help?

3 Nov, 2009

Hello Hywel.
So did you have to re-join and is your Blodyn account still running, suppose I should have checked before asking. You know I have the same problem with my user name - if only I'd given it more thought when I joined.
Love the Sarracenia btw.

3 Nov, 2009

Hi Hywel. Nice to see you under your true name. Love the photo of you and Blodyn. Your Pitcher plant is gorgeous.

3 Nov, 2009

Neat bit of sidestepping there, Hywel! There wasn't much option, I know, I like the redirect from Blodyn's page, so I'm guessing you must have enlisted again as Hywel. Mystified as to how though, I thought when you logged on to GoY it recognised your email address and your user name automatically.

3 Nov, 2009

Hmmmm...I was wondering that too......anyway. good to put a face to a name :))

3 Nov, 2009

Hello Hywel :))
That's a lovely pic of you and Blodyn...now I know who's who, lol xx

3 Nov, 2009

Hi Hywell Welcome to GOY LOL....

3 Nov, 2009

Watch out that plant doesn't get you hywel, it looks a bit like a triffid. What a splendid specimen. What will it feed on? Nice view through your window by the way.

3 Nov, 2009

Is this the Sarracenia that eats vine weavils, as someone was talking about recently? We've not managed to find one (a dozen?) yet.

3 Nov, 2009

On the label it was just called 'insect eating plant'. It said it feeds on flies it catches. No mention of vine weevils.

3 Nov, 2009

nice to meet you hywell and blodyn

3 Nov, 2009

Hello Hywel, I was nearly confused, but it is you! :o)

3 Nov, 2009

Hello Hywel..
WELCOME TO GOY..
We are a friendly group of people...
I'm sure you'll love it here. ;o) xxx

3 Nov, 2009

Thank you TT. I'm sure I'll enjoy GoY :o)
Thank you Joanella
Sorry it's a bit confusing Anne. Glad you were able to work it out.

3 Nov, 2009

I've missed a few so thank you everyone.

3 Nov, 2009

lovely fuchsia avitar Hywel and lovely to put a face to the name. welcome in your own right. :o)

3 Nov, 2009

Nice to meet you face-to-face ... so to speak. Love your new avatar.

3 Nov, 2009

Well done, my friend - so glad it all worked in the end! :-)))

3 Nov, 2009

So good to have you back.

3 Nov, 2009

None of your pictures or avatar have loaded for me, but no matter! I guess I have to re-add you as a favourite under your new account. My question has always been do I say "Howell" as I hear Hywel in my mind, or something altogether different in Welsh, no respector of spelling, like Ivan?! A rose by any other name smells just as sweet!

3 Nov, 2009

Thank you everyone. It feels more comfortable with my own name.

Orgratis it is pronounced "Howell". Ivan is "eevan" ( not eye van )
My old page with the name 'Blodyn' still exisis but you will not see it under my new name. If you click on my old avatar you'll see it. If you want to put me as a favourite you have to add the new avatar. I have Blodyn as a favourite on the Hywel page , and I have Hywel as a favourite on the Blodyn page lol :o)

Welcome Hywel , it's nice to have you back where you belong ... :o)

4 Nov, 2009

Lovely to have you back Hywel and to 'see' you too.
It's not like Blodyn to be camera shy!

4 Nov, 2009

Hi it's nice to put a face to the name. I know when I signed on I posted the first user name that came to my head. I'll tell my friend about you plant he was talking about insect eaters the oher day.

4 Nov, 2009

She doesn't like to be lifted up Lily.

Thank you Amy :o)

And Gardengirl :o)
I put 'Blodyn' because I thought it was only a security word I needed.

4 Nov, 2009

Yet another similarity with Daisy Hywel, maybe they ARE related after all. lol

4 Nov, 2009

I know the place I got Blodyn from said they didn't have room so they sent some cats to 'South of England' - that's what they said, so it is possible .

4 Nov, 2009

Hi, HOwel! I always thought of you as "Hiwell"! It'll take some time for the pronunciation to sink in!

I love the Fuchsia you've chosen for you avatar picture! I've added you to my Favourites once again. I've also changed my avatar photo - for a picture of ... my balcony!!! So many GoYers have changed theirs lately I thought I would jump on the bandwagon! LOL!

I can't seen the photo of you & Blodyn up above. :-(

Lovely Pitcher plants you have there BTW! My daughter gave me a Venus Fly Trap for my birthday a few years ago but, unfortunately, it got a dowsing in cologne water! She had put the bottle in the same bag as the plant & it had come unscrewed! :-( Needless to say the poor plant died after a few weeks!

4 Nov, 2009

So about those "pottery things", Hywel...? Are we going to get a glimpse now that the flowers are fading?!

4 Nov, 2009

I'll be making pottery things in the new year. I have to sort my shed out first.
When my mother came here it took all my time to care for her - no time for pottery. Now she has died I have more time, but my shed is in a mess. I hope to sort it out by the new year.

I wonder why you can't see the photo David. There's another one on my photo page.
Pitty about your venus fly trap.

4 Nov, 2009

Sounds very much like they did come from the same rescue centre then Hywell. Does Blodyn like her tummy touched? Daisy's is most definitely out of bounds!
I've got wrong pronunciation too then, I always think of you as Hewell - oh well, I'll try and think different then! lol

4 Nov, 2009

I can see your photo now! No idea why I couldn't see it before! Anyway I discovered your photo & left a comment.

Hi Hywel - glad to see you are not a split personality any more lol

Like your Sarracenia....it looks like the one I've got which is S. stevensii. They are fun to grow!

4 Nov, 2009

Its nice to put a face to a name............is your new plant a fly catcher......

5 Nov, 2009

Hi Hywel. It's nice to put a face to a name though in the short time I've been a member I kind of got used to Blodyn so will miss her avatar popping up :~(
But you are both on my favourites now

5 Nov, 2009

Thank you all.
Yes Holly it catches flies. On the label it said not to feed it. It does that it's self lol.

5 Nov, 2009

Just realised why I wasn't seeing your blogs/photos as they appeared. Now I have made you a 'favourite' it works very well :)
Welcome to GoY!

5 Nov, 2009

Hi Hywell! Nice to see you! We've just had our internet re-connected after several days without it and I was surprised but delighted to see your new avatar. Will you be letting us see some of your pottery?

6 Nov, 2009

Thank you Gee :o)

Hi Nariz, I'm glad you've been re-connected now.
When I've made some pots I'll show them , but it won't be till the new year. I have to sort the shed out first. It's in a mess because when my mother was ill I didn't have time, and I dumped lots of things in there. I hope to get down to it soon :o)

6 Nov, 2009

Good to see you, Blodyn and a healthy Sarracenia too!

7 Nov, 2009

Hi Hywel,
Good to see your new avatar - what a beautiful Fuchsia! Hope Blodyn is well, am going to add you to my favourites again.
Chris xx

7 Nov, 2009

8 Nov, 2009

I hope my photo didn't give you too much of a shock :o))

8 Nov, 2009

NO you have a look of Paul O'Gradey[the T V presenter] about you .That's a complement by the way lol :o))

8 Nov, 2009

Oh dear - - lol !
Well thanks for the compliment :o)

8 Nov, 2009

Good to see you and your new friend Sarracenia, I am growing these plants just taken them in for the winter, have been outside all summer.

8 Nov, 2009

Hi Hywel, we have one just like this. I've never owned one before and am a little nervous about killing it (speshully as it's really my son's not mine). Are there any absolute don'ts, do you think?
On a different matter entirely, who knitted your excellent waistcoat? I like it.

9 Nov, 2009

I don't know about the Sarracenia. I've never grown one before, and I only bought it a few weeks ago .
lol - my waistcoat.:o) I was going to take it off but I forgot.
I'm glad you like it.
A few years ago my mam was going to knit one for me, but she had become unable to do it, so she asked Edna the Woollshop to knit one instead. It doesn't have many buttons left on it lol

9 Nov, 2009

"Edna the Woolshop" that is so Welsh - I wish I could hear you speak, Hywel, the Welsh accent is top of my favourites list, I think it's great. I had a Welsh neighbour years ago, lovely lady, helped me enormously at a difficult time in my life, but she moved back to Wales - I've had a fondness for the Welsh ever since! (had a Welsh grandmother too..)

Your Sarracenia likes to sit in a container of water all the time, as he's a bog plant. He only likes rain water, as tap water contains minerals that will not be good for him. You don't need to feed him at all. He needs to be able to get cold enough to go dormant over the winter - all those pitchurs should go brown and dry and can be cut off when they start to look unsightly. But don't let him get too cold. Mine will be overwintering in my cold greenhouse, which worked fine last winter.

I have a slight Welsh accent - I can't tell myself, but you'd be amazed at how often I get asked if I'm Welsh when I'm away from home!

9 Nov, 2009

pity there's no audio on here...

9 Nov, 2009

You should hear my brother Bamboo. Funniest accent you've ever heard. Black Country with a Welsh lilt would you believe! I've held on to mine in Norfolk for over 30 years, so I accuse him of having no willpower.

9 Nov, 2009

I don't like all regional accents - I hesitate to mention this, cos I'm probably gonna be shot down in flames, but my nephew grew up in Wigan - what an ugly accent that is. Alright, alright, you Wiganites, I'll get my coat...

9 Nov, 2009

LOL
I'm keeping quiet.

(pardon?!)

9 Nov, 2009

And I'm definitely saying nowt !! lol ;~)))

9 Nov, 2009

Roight, Sue.

9 Nov, 2009

I hate a posh accent - posh English or posh Welsh - can't stand them lol, but I like the regional ones
I have an upper Swansea Valley accent

9 Nov, 2009

I've no idea what posh welsh sounds like, Hywel! And I don't like my accent much - saff eas lunnon, as it is...

9 Nov, 2009

There are lots of different Welsh accents, both when we speak English and when we speak Welsh. People talk about a "Welsh" accent as if all Welsh people had the same one, but there are different accents in different regions the same as in England.
I don't think you'd recognise a posh Welsh accent unless you understood the language.
Why don't you like your accent ?

9 Nov, 2009

I only don't like it when I hear myself on tape or something - sooo cockney, I sound like some sort of caricature off Eastenders. Don't get me wrong, I do pronounce the d in London, and the tts in butter and water, but there's such a twang - my in laws were quite posh, and when I first met their friends, they asked me which part of Australia I came from!

9 Nov, 2009

Like I said I don't think much of 'posh' people nor their accents. They seem to look down their noses at you, and their accents sound unnatural.
My dad has a cousin who's wife is from London. I love listening to her talking. I bet your accent is fine also.

9 Nov, 2009

Well maybe, but not to my ears - its as bad as Wigan! Although I had a friend from Hull, and her accent wasn't ugly - northern, but not ugly. No idea where Hull is in relation to Wigan, though. When I was in America years ago, we went to New York - the Bronx, and everywhere I went, American people kept asking me to "say something" cos they loved the accent, so different folks, different strokes, I guess.

9 Nov, 2009

Hywel, glad to know you. Beautiful plant and cat!

9 Nov, 2009

Thank you hmhb:o)

Hull and Wigan are on opposite sides of the country. Hull on the east coast, Wigan near the west coast. I don't know how far though.

9 Nov, 2009

ah, thanks for that Hywel, that could well explain the slight difference in accent then.

9 Nov, 2009

Sid is spot on about the Sarracenia,I keep mine outside for the winter and at Kew there are some outside and others kept in the cool carnivorous section. they are lovely plants and the flowers are amazing.

9 Nov, 2009

Thank you. I'll put it outside then. At the moment it's on the kitchen windowsill.
