Fuchsias

I’ve been checking my Fuchsias, in the hope they survived that cold blast we had at the beginning of the month.

I’m pleased to say most have !

There were a few losses … about 5 nice varieties that I will try to replace one day,
but most are all right :)

They are very dry now, not having been watered since about November lol so in a few days time I shall repot them and water them.

I hope you all have few or no plant casualties in your gardens.

Thats very good to hear Hywel, considering how awful it has been I would have thought you would have have suffered more losses!!
Not sure yet how many plants we may have lost, won't know for about a couple of months.....will just have to buy more lol!!

My two standard Fuchsias aren't budding up yet Hywel, but still green in the stems...
Only my Hebes look a bit sick and a large purple sage bush, but in all, can't really grumble...

a couple of dicentras and Salvia royal bumble look a bid sad but so far that is all I seem to have lost but it is early days yet.
glad you have only lost a few of your lovely fuchsias

So glad you have lost too many. I'm still waiting to see if my one and only fuchsia has made it. 🤞

I have lost one established cutting which I'd left in an unheated wallhouse but no idea how the rest have survived as nothing's growing yet. I'm glad you appear to have got away with it lightly - its a bit worrying going round checking isn't it?

Jen what variety is yours?

I would have been really sorry to read that you had lost a lot of your fuschias but 5, after the winter we've had is not too disappointing for you. I hope they are ones that you can replace without too much trouble.

It's called "Army Nurse " Sue.I planted it deep in the border ànd piled compose around it last autumn so I'm hope that this time it made it through unlike the year before. I've got my fingers cross 😀

Great Hywel, let’s hope Beast From The East 3 is a myth.
I have fuchsia cuttings in the coldframe, so hopefully they’re ok and my hardy ones are usually ok, I cut them down late spring.

That's good news Hywel. I've lost one or two plants so far but nothing of significance as far as I can see. My hardy fuchsias are still dormant and the ones more tender in the greenhouse are just showing new growth :-)

That's good then Hywel, I think I've lost my Banana Plant even though it was wrapped securely, I have given it a tidy and repotted but not looking good, my Fuschia's are not showing any green yet, lost two big succulents but have laid the best leaves out in the hopes one or two root for me,geraniums looked a bit sad but are recovering, so guess I didn't do too bad, all my own fault as I haven't had the heater in line this year...

I'm glad most have survived. I planted a Fuchsia 'Linda Hinchcliffe' last year and when I looked at it yesterday, it's looks like just a few twigs. I hoping it will be ok. It was only small last year and didn't reach it's full potential, but i could tell it would get better( hopefully, anyway), but with the frosts and snow, who knows.

Thats freat nearly all your Fuchsia have survived. Hywel enjoy your potting up ☺ I doubt if any of mine have though.

Roll on the Spring. Only one more cold blast I hope. No more please.

Great to hear the, relatively, good news that the great majority of your Fuchsias have survived, Hywel! 😄

At the moment it seems I haven't lost any of mine though I did try to take some precautions & it seems they worked! I've scratched a tiny bit of back of a stem on each plant & underneath they are all green. 😄

The only plant I seem to have lost is a Tradescantia fluminensis, a green version of the popular "Wandering Jew". It put up with a few light frosts but the -6C during the evening of March 1st proved too much for it!

Too soon to make a fair assessment. I always have a couple casualties but that just clears the way for something new.

26 Mar, 2018

Glad most of your fuchsias are ok, Hy. Look forward to seeing them in bloom much later on.

27 Mar, 2018

Thanks for your comments. Roll on some warmer weather :)

27 Mar, 2018

My finger and toes are crossed for you Hywel here they have forecast snow again for easter.

27 Mar, 2018

I remember heavy snowfalls in April in the past ...
but I think they're probably scaremongering again !

27 Mar, 2018

I hope so Hywel .☺

27 Mar, 2018

Some of the worst storms on record happened in
April. Once I got snowed in at work and had to spend the night because nobody could get to me. It was very weird.

27 Mar, 2018

I wouldn't have liked that at all Bathgate ...

28 Mar, 2018

I am so glad your fuschias are ok Hywel. Noone has a collection like yours! Hopefully we have missed the worst of winter weather now ! Says she ! Hahaa!

They have ruled out the possibility of snow, at least for the majority of the UK except for the highlands of Scotland. We are forecast a cold but dry Easter weekend for most parts according to the Met Office.

I just wish it would warm up so I can get on with my seed sowing! I have lots of seeds I want to sow but the cold weather is making me defer from sowing them for a time. I can't give them the protection they need if the weather suddenly turns very cold again!

28 Mar, 2018

Thank you all for your comments.

I never sow seeds before mid April Balcony, it's always too cold. And I'm not in a hurry anyway.

29 Mar, 2018

We are expecting a snowy Easter Monday Bank holiday! Hope it will pass very quickly! Seems like from Tuesday onwards the temps are going to rise again!👍😃

30 Mar, 2018

Roll on Tuesday then :) Rain is forecast for us here on Monday.

I lost a scented geranium that I’ve had for a few years...well I say I’ve lost it I’ve cut it back and left it in the hopes it’s still alive, my fault forgot to wrap it up it’s been fine outside previous winters but they weren’t as bad as this one! I’ve a few fuschias too but they are supple and green so hoping they’ve survived.

31 Mar, 2018

I hope your fuchsias do well.. they always look so pretty in your garden.
