At last I have been able to plant my bulbs !

This is the latest I’ve ever done it, but between everything I just wasn’t able to get around to it this time.

I did them on the kitchen floor, and now they are all in pots outside having the rain :)

Good job done there. we have snow today so at least you have rain. Hopefully you wont get the flooding that has been on the news tonight.

That's good Hywel, but you don't say WHAT bulbs you have planted!

W, too, have had a little snow here today but it has now all gone! 😃😃😃

Thank you all :)

We've had rain but not enough for floods.
I hope the snow clears soon for you all.

The bulbs were various types of miniature daffodils and a bag of tulips.

Well done Hywel, better late than never! I bought some leftover bulbs at a garden centre yesterday - they are growing at the tips but have no roots so hoping for the best. You've encouraged me to get planting!

I hope you can plant them soon. I was getting worried that mine would rot in their bags but they were all right.

Good, you're just as late as me then Hywel! I did half in October, then didn't get round to the rest till Friday afternoon. 2pots of weeny daffs, already sprouted...I think they are Hiawatha...very scented and late flowering...

Thanks Janey :)

Good for you Hywel, the way the seasons have been in recent years I don't think we need to follow the old rules, can remember finding a bag full of tulips and daffs late January last year, like you I popped them all in pots, that turned out to be the best display I'd had in years, and all of them flowered for me, lol....

Ours are done. Other Half does all that. We are still tidying up, with help now, but the tubs will have some colour hopefully, cum Spring.

You're not alone. I've got about 10 bags of daffodil bulbs still to plant. Not sure if to plant them now or wait until Autumn.

22 Jan, 2018

Thanks for all your comments :)

I would plant them now Lisa, they will grow anyway, so will be ruined by the autumn if not planted.

I bet you were pleased to get that job out of the way Hywel. I planted some freesia bulbs today but have not always been successful in the past! Fingers crossed!

22 Jan, 2018

Thanks Chris, yes I was relieved to get them planted. They were getting on my nerves.
I've never had any success with Fresia bulbs. They seem to come better from seeds. I hope your bulbs grow well :)

When we first came to live here we planted around 200 daffodil bulbs in the garden/field and dotted foxgloves all around. Lost practically all. Our neighbour threw out daffs on to the heath and a lovely big patch still blooms there every year! Plants can be awkward!

How about that Eirlys ! :) Sometimes it's as if they spite us.

Thanks for that, Hywel. I planted all my spring flowering bulbs in the autumn, late October I think. There are lots of Daffodils sprouting on the balcony & soon the Snowdrops & Crocuses will be flowering as well. 😃

I haven't got any Tulips of flowering size this year as mine always seem to break up into dozens of small bulbils that need a couple of years to grow on before flowering again or they just die where they are.

I underplant Pansies with Daffs & Crocuses & get a great display every year - that is if the Pansies survive to their main period of flowering in March-May. They look alright at the present moment but for 3 or 4 years they have died off & I've had no flowers to cover the dying Daffs & Crocus leaves at the end of the spring.

Great you ve got your bulbs planted up Hywel I ve still got a few to plant but might be to late now lol I plant mine in the kitchen to to cold to go out side not had good weather here.

22 Jan, 2018

I never get tulips to come back the following year Balcony. If they do they only produce leaves. I never buy them but Beryl does, and I have to plant them for her.
I hope your pansies survive. They are another thing I get no success with.

If the bulbs are still firm they should be all right Thruppenybit. I hope your weather improves. x

Thank you Hywel I shall try them then.

I put my most of my Tulips in pots Hywel with lots of grit at the bottom mixed with stones then mix grit in the compost mine in the pots come back every year.

23 Jan, 2018

Thanks I'll remember that for next year :) x

Better late than never.......I am sure they will be fine....

So leased to be encouraged by all you other late planters! I got mine in yesterday - just in pots as the ground is too soaked.

Your welcome Hywel ☺x

Thank you all :)

I hope you late bulb planters get a good show from them!

Just this evening my son sent me a photo of some Daffs he bought just a couple of weeks ago in flower on his living room windowsill! He asked me at the time if I would like some but I said no, they wouldn't likely flower this year & I have no space on the balcony to plant them up in hopes of them flowering next year!

He's always buying plants that are as good as dead & that I wouldn't touch with a barge pole! Yet some how they survive & go on to flower for months! Last Christmas he bought a poinsettia from a big supermarket that was as good as dead for about 50p, not only did it not die it has lived to flower again this year!!! He also sent me a photo of it this evening!

He's much more than a "Chip of the old block"! 😂 Last year was only his 2nd year of gardening in his 40 years of life! It was his first full gardening year at the house where he no lives!

While he is getting to beat his "old man" I seem to be losing my "magical touch". Last Christmas he gave me a beautiful Poinsettia but I accidentally overwatered it & within about a month I'd killed it! This year he has given me a 2nd chance by buying me another one but even though I'm being very careful not to overwater it I've had to move it to the kitchen as the leaves & bracts were drying up & falling off the plant while in the living room!

24 Jan, 2018

Maybe the air or light or temperature in your flat isn't to the Poinsettia's liking Balcony. Plants can be very fussy.

25 Jan, 2018

Better late than never Hywel ! I actually left some bulbs in a bowl in my little greenhouse , so as you have just planted yours, I will plant mine (when we have a dry day !) and see what happens !

27 Jan, 2018

Good luck ! I hope your bulbs give a good show :)

27 Jan, 2018

Thanks Hywel !
