Another old church and wild flower blog

The weather is very wet, and I can’t take any photos of the garden …. (but I DO enjoy a rainy day lol) …. so I thought I’d show another place we went last week, in the sunshine.
It’s another abandoned church, near here :o)

I like the way old churchyards become overgrown. It means that lots of wild flowers can grow there without being disturbed.

The old church in this blog is way off the road :o)
To get to it you must walk about a mile along this lovely path ….

It winds on for a while, under the overhanging branches.
And then you come to it – the little church down in a dell …

It hasn’t been used for services since 1961, …. and in the 80s the Wildlife Trust of south and west Wales used it as an information centre . They used to display local information for schools and visitors inside it.

Now however, it is not used, and is in need of much restoration work :o(

This lovely Celtic cross is one of the grave stones …

As you can see, the place is very overgrown, and we saw several wild flowers there, like this Germander Speedwell – Veronica chamaedrys …

And a white form of the Red Campion – Silene dioica.

Aswell as the usual type :o)

Also Bush Vetch – Vicia sepium …

There are old Yews there too, with gnarled trunks …

And in the surrounding fields we encountered some bovine friends :o)

Then it was time to head back to the car, which was parked by the Llandeilo road bridge …

I hope you’ve enjoyed coming to these two old churchyards with us, and seeing all the wild flowers growing there. :o)

I have really enjoyed it, what a lovely old church, bet it would make a lovely house if it got renovated proper, loved the walk with you beautiful photos and wildflowers, it was saying on Spring Watch last night that everyone needs to grow more wild flowers to attract more honey bees as there is not many of them.

Lovely place and walk there Hywel : )

I enjoyed that as well Hywel, the flowers and the church are lovely. So does everyone have to walk that mile to get to the church or is there access from another direction as well, by car. Such a shame that it fell into disrepair like that.

8 Jun, 2012

Thank you all for your comments.
Cinderella, there is no access by car to this church. It's only by shanks pony lol

And you live in a beautiful area.

I'd happily walk a mile (or two) to such a lovely place, what a shame the church is not in use for anything now. Delightful blog, Hywel, and I loved the trees. I wonder how old they are?

8 Jun, 2012

8 Jun, 2012

It really is a special place isn't it Hywel? Part of its beauty is the loneliness.

8 Jun, 2012

So peaceful and unspoilt, I guess the birdsong was lovely too

8 Jun, 2012

8 Jun, 2012

After a busy day with heavy rain,it was so good to come into the dry and enjoy this walk with you Hywel. You've some smashing photos there, I loved seeing the cows in the river, everything looks so peaceful, the little chapel hidden away would be a place I'd love to visit, you're so lucky to live in such a beautiful part of Wales.

8 Jun, 2012

what a beautiful blog Hywel, I love your photo's and that church is so lovely, a shame it cannot be restored back to its former glory.

8 Jun, 2012

What a beautiful peaceful place! If I didn't love mountains so much it's the sort of place I could happily spend the rest of my days exploring! :o)

8 Jun, 2012

I really enjoyed the little walk Hywel , especially the one through the trees. What a lovely old church and isn't it a shame its getting neglected. You're very good on naming all the wild flowers . I never knew there was a white campion. The photos of all the flowers are amazing. Thanks for the tour.

8 Jun, 2012

Enjoyed my wee trip out today Hywel...thank you :) You do take such good pictures. You certainly know your stuff about wildflowers. Thanks again - it's too miserable here to do much!!

8 Jun, 2012

Oh Hywel, just beautiful, I do love your blogs and your wildflower/church walks. That walk through the trees..... Simply lovely.

8 Jun, 2012

Lovely blog Hywel and interesting to see the white campion. I've only ever seen it growing once, though the pink one grows prolifically everywhere here including the garden! I liked that close up of the vetch , and the composition of the bridge pic with the valerian - so peaceful.

8 Jun, 2012

I think that the white is biennial I tried to grow it once and it flowered but diddn't set seed so I don't think it liked it here....those old yew trees are lovely to see really interesting

8 Jun, 2012

I think the government should list your whole area to preserve the peace and tranquility of these lovely Welsh valleys. I would love to visit your area and see all those places. Maybe its a celtic thing but I love visiting old churchyards. That Celtic cross headstone is in wonderful condition. I could not read the date on it but if it is reasonably modern then the stonemason was a superb craftsman.

8 Jun, 2012

Years ago when I went to Wales, I noticed how the Campions were a darker red. They are pink in Northamptonshire. Are they affected by a nutrient in the Welsh soil ?

Lovely blog anyway, cheer us all up.

8 Jun, 2012

Lovely blog Hywel. That little church is so very lovely

8 Jun, 2012

What a fantastic response lol :D .... thanks everyone.

Diane the soil isn't the same all over Wales, so that can't be the reason.
I've seen pale and dark campions in different places myself. I don't know why ... but maybe it's a nautural variation.

Scotsgran the date on the cross is 1949, but since the graves point away from us, the names on the other side must be older.
I wish the area was really as peaceful as it looks on my photos lol ...

8 Jun, 2012

It is a very interesting church and churchyard.

8 Jun, 2012

I really enjoyed this Hywel, I always wonder when seeing these old churches how far the community travelled to worship there, is, or was there in years gone by a thriving village nearby?
Lovely photo`s Hywel...

8 Jun, 2012

Love the old church, and the tree trunk is fascinating. That cow had got his eye on you Hywel. Is the Campion also known as cock robin?...... I think I called it that as a child.

8 Jun, 2012

Lovely blog and pictures Hywel what a beautiful old church, such a shame it is unused nowadays, that tree trunk was fascinating and the Celtic cross.........

Thank you all for reading my wild flower blogs :o)

Poppylinda, yes it is called that. It's got several names I think :o)

Sue, the church is near Llandeilo, but formed a different parish to the town, and it's a long way from the road.

What a beautiful place Hywel. In the photo's it comes across as being a lovely peacefull place. Its a shame the church has been left to fall into disrepair, but wonderful to see so many wildflowers in the church yard. Just beautiful.

9 Jun, 2012

Really lovely blog, I do envy your beautiful scenery, pictures superb especially the cows, (love cows).........

9 Jun, 2012

Hywel, it is quite magical.I love old churches. What is it about old church yards and Yew trees? The picture of the cows wading in the stream is fabulous. It takes you back to an idyllic, bygone time when life moved at a more leisurely pace. I can almost hear the strains of Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony playing gently in the background...

9 Jun, 2012

Thank you both for reading my blog :o)

Thankyou soooo much for this lovely blog. I was feeling very fed up with our lovely British weather and wondering what it would feel like to be out in the sun and your blog has just given me hope and a reminder of how wonderful our countryside is xx

12 Jun, 2012

Wow what a lovely blog. Like others I felt I did the walk with you. AMAZING photo's and thank you for taking us with you xx

12 Jun, 2012

Well! What a lovely walk.

Thanks for that, quite refreshing.

It is a delight to see that not everything has been reduced to commercial marketing. Let it be, is what I say; Let the place sleep and succumb to nature.

Beautiful.

Beautiful, lovely to share it with us

14 Jun, 2012

I enjoyed your blog Hywel. I would not want to renovate the old church myself. It has a kind of decaying beauty that makes it so lovely. I love the way you show us it with an appreciative artistic eye and throw in your knowledge of wild flowers. ~Thank you so much for sharing this with us all.

15 Jun, 2012

I love this blog Hywel...That lovely old church seems to have grown out of the land, and the beautiful old stone will return once again to the earth as it should. Such a magical place....Thanks once again for taking us there. I always say it, but you live in a beautiful part of the world:-)

17 Jun, 2012

Too true, Bornagain. Poppylover, you're so right about the decaying beauty of the church and think of all the wild flowers which would be disturbed in the process of renovation. It's the same when flowers fade; they often have beautiful seed-heads to follow or berries or hips and if we tidy too much, we lose not only that aspect of their personalities but the bounty they provide to the wildlife of our gardens.

17 Jun, 2012

Hear, hear Hywel - so true.

17 Jun, 2012

aww lovely, tuesdaybear, sounds so profound, but true! :-))

17 Jun, 2012

Sorry Tuesdaybear - my comment should have been addressed to you :-(

17 Jun, 2012

Tuesdaybear, apparently the yew is supposed to symbolise everlasting life as even if the main trunk dies, it is surrounded by replacement trunks, that's what I read anyway lol. All the old aged yews in our local churchyard have many twisted narrow trunks surrounding the main:-)
