… because I saw an Early Purple Orchid, Orchis mascula :)

I didn’t see any last year, and happened to mention yesterday while driving out, that I thought they had become rare. Then around the next bend there they were ! A clump of them in the hedge. Further along – another few, and then more again…..

It has spotty leaves

That must have been a lovely surprise, clever of you to know what they were.

Hywel, that is the very opposite of "sad" ! I remember the first time I saw an orchid like this growing in a woodland area in Fife as I was on a long country walk all by myself! The only sad thing about it was not having anyone to share it with! Thanks for sharing your moment with us!

You were to be excited Hywel, such a pretty flower. Hedgerows just don't seem to have as many wild flowers these days, best I've seen recently are pink Campion.

i'm excited seeing your photos, these are fantastic plants. I know where we have the green twayblades in a local area I must keep my eye open for them.

Great photos Hywel, what's to be sad about....lol

I thought you might be sad because : "When the flowers are just opened the scent is usually sweet, like honey, but soon smells strongly of tom-cat's urine," Who on earth comes up with these descriptions? Who sniffs Tom-cat's urine to make the comparison?

These are lovely Hywel. Wagger your reply gave me the giggles, it reminded me of a time we went for a chinese meal and we tried a chinese liqueur called Mow Tae and one of the group said it tasted like licking a pigs back , as I`ve never licked a pigs back I couldn`t comment, I couldn`t anyway as I was choking with laughter.

Interesting blog, Hywel. I wouldn't have known what this was if I had seen one. Thanks for enlightening me. I keep meaning to get a book on wild flowers.

I work with tropical orchids that have amazing flowers but I still get a thrill when I find our native orchids growing wild.I hope to find some next week when I'm on holiday. Lovely pictures Hywel.

Thank you for all your comments. I don't know what it smelled like.
I don't know if it grows in the north Lincslass. I live about 100 miles from Conwy.

Beautiful!

The only reason to be sad would have been if you had forgotten the camera. Another pleasant wander round your part of Wales. Thank you for sharing it with us.

I have them growing along the stream. When using the brush cutter I always give them a wide berth and I never, ever use weedkiller on the wild sections as each year more truly wild orchids appear.

Bumble bees, stag beetles, etc. love the unkempt areas and a couple of years ago, an old willow came down and in the rotting remains I found a hermit beetle which are rare even here.

Great photos in this blog, Hywel! I've never seen a wild Orchid in the UK but I did see some once when I lived in Spain. They were black & looked like black bumble bees! I was very impressed! Besides they were flowering in the baking sun in August I think close to the river but in soil baked hard by the sun. I was amazed as I thought they only ever grew in humid climates. I can still see them in my mind's eye as I write this!

I used to see some on one walk Henry and I do - but the farmer strimmed the banks - I do hope they survived, Hywel, as I totally understand how you felt!
