An experiment with the iPad camera and a blog..

I’ve found that when I have written a blog on the laptop the photos often appear sideways on and too narrow when I view it on my iPad. I thought I would try writing one on the iPad and see if it looks ok when I view it on the laptop. So off I went around the garden taking photos with the iPad and here they are….if they aren’t good when I look with the laptop I shall delete it. I won’t put any names to the plant for the quickest. Ok, here we go….
I started on the slope lawn borders….

Climbing the steps from the patio they are getting far too crowded as you can see, I will have to cut everything back soon as my sons children get a bit nervous because the flowers are alive with bees. They don’t bother my daughters children.
The top left hand border is looking lovely with all the Dianthus coming into flower. As you know I love all my Dianthus and would totally fill the garden with them if I could. A few other plants are coming along nicely too since the weather turned lovely, sunny and warm.

I pinched this from my mother in laws garden last year….

The philadelphus is flowering now. It doesn’t get chance to flower much as we have to trim it back every year or it bows out over the plants and lawn. It’s been in too many years to move it and last year I cut it right down to about a foot tall. I’m surprised it’s flowering at all.

The roses are adding their lovely scent to the borders and I’m thrilled with all the blue cones on our Christmas tree this year. I love the shrub with the flowers like fried eggs…lol

The pond is far too full of plants too and needs thinking out. If the weather stays nice and warm I shall get in there with my jelly shoes on and thin them out. I am too scared to walk about in there in bare feet…..lol. I might stand on a dragonfly larvae.

Over to the right side slope lawn and the plants are doing quite well over here too.

Then onto the flat lawn area…..this is where the clematis are taking off now on the gazebo. The border is filling out and I love the bottom corner with the acers and astrantia.

Then up onto the top garden, past the greenhouse…

I’ve only planted beans, peas and onions in my little veg patch this year…

…..and that’s about it for this trial blog. I will post it and then see how it looks on the laptop. I must say though, it’s a lot quicker to do on the iPad.

I don't think you need to delete H'bird, you have a wonderful garden and I really enjoyed the tour, never tired me out and I didn't linger, lol, so much to look at, so now I'm going back up to have a more leisurely look at and admire....

Lovely garden Homebird, and some great plants. I agree about the Philadelphus . . we pruned ours back really hard last year, and I'm amazed that it's just started to flower happily.

Looks great to me - it will be interesting to see what difference you see on the Ipad.
I've often thought a good facility on here, especially for the blog is to click on one picture and then get a slideshow of them all in full screen. We can but wish :)
Got carried away there and almost forgot to comment on your garden....
It looks great and as usual very tidy HB - lovely roses. Isn't it great when the garden is full of fragrance!

Thanks so much Lincslass, I'm glad you liked my garden with its plants pushed in wherever I can squeeze one in.lol I had a quick look on the laptop and was pleased to see the photos were ok. I think I will use the iPad to do any blogs in future. It's so much quicker.
Thanks Sheila, I thought they usually flowered on older wood but there you go they didn't read the gardening books. Lol. I'm a gardener that just buys plants that take my eye at the time and plant them wherever I can fit them in. Very little planning I'm afraid. I think at heart I'd be happy as Larry with a nice cottage garden.

Homebird, you just described how I garden too! I love your garden. I think it's one of my favourites. There is so much interest, attention to detail, and obvious care gone in to everything. It is a lovely haven! I agree, it's much quicker with the IPad. I might try it myself again soon!

Thanks Scottish, that would be a good wouldn't it. I love to read everyone's blogs, more than just clicking through photos. I also like to see areas of plants rather than just the one flower. Although there are some great close up photos put on here by some Goyers who are brilliant with the camera.

Homebird, lovely blog. Your garden looks fabulous. Bet you have to work hard to keep it looking as good as that.

Oh Homebird your garden it an absolute delight !! I see you to have a pink poppy I think mine is called madam or mrs patty or something like that must look at the label ,I to use my Ipad a brilliant little device .

It is a truly delightful garden but the stars for me are the very pretty dianthus - so go on FILL every little space with another one as they obviously do so well in your lovely garden!

Thanks so much Karen. I'm in my element while I am in the garden.
Thanks very much Derek. It doesn't really seem like work to me once the cold weather is behind us. It's a pleasure to potter and just be out there.
Thank you very much Kidsgran. I don't have a name for that one. I think it was a free gift with some plants I bought. I didn't think to use the iPad to take photos before, as I've always used my small camera, but doing this blog was so much easier and quicker. The signal got a bit weak as I got past the veg plot though but it saved the photos ok into the blog. :o)

Lol Wildrose. I didn't put photos of all the others I have dotted around the garden and I bought another 6 different ones last week.!! It's lovely to be able to give bunches of them to family and friends. Thank you for your lovely comment.

Lovely photos and blog Hb.Like you I like reading blogs and seeing gardens as a whole picture better than individual flowers, but like you say.... some of the close ups are amazing! It takes me ages to post photos, because they are always bigger than 5mgb, and I have to crop them before I can post them, and it takes me ages to write a blog! Perhaps I should invest in an Ipad, or better still drop a few subtle hints to YKW!!!!! Whats the name of the plant from your mother in laws garden called, I've got one very similar growing, a gift from my feathered friends!!lol

Loved your tour and your garden is wonderful! :-)

Please could you tell me how you posted your blog plus photos with your iPad, as I have one as well? It takes me ages with my laptop.

Thank you Spritz.
Log onto Goy with the iPad.
Choose Write a blog from menu
Start blog as usual
Click on add photos. It brings up 3 add photo boxes.
Click on first one and it gives two choices....add existing or take photo. If you click on existing it brings up thumbnails that I found too small to choose from and couldn't enlarge, so chose to take photo.
When you have taken the photo it asks if you want to use photo or retake. Choose use if you are happy with the photo and it goes back to add photo. (You can add another two photos if you want.) Click on add photo and it takes a matter of seconds to upload into the blog. Of course you can use existing photos if you want to by taking all your photos before you start your blog. I found it easier to take the photos and upload as I wrote the blog. I didn't have to search for them or move them around in the blog as I do on the laptop. I hope I have explained this well enough. If not please ask. I liked being able to see the photo I took and being able to use or retake until I was happy enough with it.

After reading your last comment it does sound much easier with the iPad I might try it too :-)
Your garden is gorgeous H'bird my sort of garden jam packed with plants, really love it !!!. Know what you mean about pond plants growing like mad I've been pulling out water soldiers, two barrow loads and its hardly made a difference!!!! Sure they pop up overnight lol.

What a wonderful feast for the eye, I`m saving it for my favourites so that I can take a leisurely view and enjoy it to the full. You have an amazing garden Homebird, it obviously gives you great pleasure.

Thanks, Homebird - I shall have a go! :-)) I've copied your instructions into a word document which I'll print off and take round with me.

I love your garden, especially those steps, I have always liked steps in the garden, we are very flat here and always think that steps add so much to a garden. Lovely blog and pictures all seem to be the right way up so well done on the experiment. :O) and of course on that gorgeous garden. :O)

How come your photos are all the right way up? Mine look fine if I read my blog on my iPad, but they're sideways or even upside down on here! HELP!!!

16 Jun, 2014

Spritzhenry, I remember reading a blog a while ago about someone having a similar problem. If I find the blog I will point you to it. The conclusion was that " It's nothing you are doing wrong, it is a mismatch of software between GoYsite and Apple. I believe there is probably nothing you can do about it." I have been doing some photos and blogs on my mini iPad, but haven't, touch wood, had that problem. Maybe report the problem to the GoY admin. via 'contact us' and see if they have any suggestions.

16 Jun, 2014

Spitzhenry ... The question was asked by HANK on 29 May 2014. It may be of interest to have a read. The question starts "Am quite fed up with being told my photos are upside down ........ ".

I am sure you already know this,

If you type Hank, into the search bar and go to his "profile", you can then get access to his questions.

Hope this helps.

If you take your photos holding the iPad with the volume button at the top, your photos will be the right way up when viewed on the laptop. If you are taking your photos with the iPad on its side or upside down that's how they will appear on the laptop. Sorry, I should have mentioned that.

16 Jun, 2014

I wondered if that was the case Homebird and was going to suggest locking the iPad rotation out, located on the general section of the settings. "Use side switch for" tick lock rotation, then flick the switch, which, on the mini IPad is on the top LHS, just to the left of the volume increase/ decrease buttons.

Yes Alan it's the same on mine. I haven't used it but will try it. Thanks.

A lovely tour of a very pretty garden, so full of colour and interest HB I did not realise you were so high up either....keeps you fit, I bet.

16 Jun, 2014

Thanks, Homebird and Alan - that's helpful. I haven't seen this option on my iPad, but it seems I need to find it!

Well done homebird. Your garden looks amazing and the photos are excellent. I started recently with GOU using my camera and then transfering the pics on the memory card to my Ipad, which is simple but time consuming. Now I use my Ipad for pics, unless I can't get in close enough because of its size.

Well, it seems it's been a fairly successful experiment so I feel more confident in using the iPad to cut down on the time it normally takes to write a blog. Thank you to you all for your encouragement and lovely comments. I had real doubts that it would turn out ok, especially as it was so much quicker to do.
