New plants from our visit to Newark Garden Show today.

I have been looking forward to going to the Newark and Notts Showground for the Garden show since we saw it advertised last month when we visited the mobile home show. That day was bitterly cold and we left the village under an 8 inch layer of snow.

Today it was a glorious spring day. The sun shone all day in a clear blue sky and it was so warm, the majority of people were in T shirts. There were some beautiful plants to be had at extermely good prices. It was a real pleasure to walk around. The first area we saw as we went in through the gates was this…..

Aren’t they brilliant.
After walking round the show ground we visited the areas where we had seen the plants we wanted. I love the flowering quinces and I was spoilt for choice there. I got three different ones. I took photos of the information boards because I knew I wouldn’t remember the names of the plants I bought…..lol these show the mother plants and I bought good sized smaller plants. They were 3 for £10.

This is the Madam Butterfly I bought. The other two have loads of buds on but aren’t open yet.

I then got these three shrubs for £10 again taking photos of the info and mother plants. The young ones I got are a really good size too. When they are settled into the garden and flowering I will take photos of them.

I found a lovely bulb stall and got 3 large eucomis bulbs in different colours and 3 Foxtail lilies. Trouble is, I also got 2 roots of something I can’t remember the name of……They were something I had never seen before so I’m going to have to wait until they flower to search for a name. One of these days I will remember to use the notebook and pen i carry in my bag…….lol
I really enjoyed myself today and can’t wait to get everything planted or potted up tomorrow.

I liked the Chaenomeles too, nice change from the usual red one. Also the Ribes oderatum is unusual, haven't seen that one before. Sounds like you had a nice day out, thank goodness spring has arrived at last.

Thanks everyone and for the 'heads up' Andrew on the Clianthus. I thought it was such a good idea for the sellers to show the actual parent plants in flower. The Chaenomeles were the best things I found.

A really lovely selection of plants HB have just bought another Chaenomeles but it was red, have looked at the peach coloured and pink one many times, but the red one was in a 3 for 10.00, the Grevillea grows very large, but you do have more space than us.....didn't you do well?

The Chaenomeles were 3 for £10. Dd. that's why I got these 3. I have a deep red one in the front garden and another smaller one in a pot up the garden from last year that also needs planting now. I would love them to grow like Tt's. She has a brilliant one.

I never get the pruning right on them, ours always look scruffy.!!

21 Apr, 2013

I have only ever cut out any dead wood on the one in the front garden Dd and the other red one is only just getting going so hasn't needed pruning. I honestly don't know how you should prune them. Trial and error at our house....lol

Had to smile at some of your photo's H'bird, reminds me of my youngest daughter, we are terrible at remembering the names so she always says" Get your phone out mum, I love that one, we need the label".
Three for ten pounds sounds a good buy for the Chaenomeles, I would not have been able to resist, really like the peach one...

OH is the one for pruning, although he goes a bit mad at times.....luckily most plants grow back.....
