Sunshine one minute-blizzard the next....

It’s been a really crazy day today weather-wise. One minute bright sunshine then the next it’s gone dark and a blizzard is blowing outside. Thankfully the roads are staying pretty clear since they thawed this morning. I tried to capture the flurries of snow as it was fascinating to see as it became like a thick fog blanket all around. It’s flattened the poor plants but hopefully they can spring back.

It was 17c in the unheated greenhouse when I went up to check the plants although it felt freezing outside. It just shows that there is quite a bit of warmth in the sun when it deems to shine. It’s the icy north east wind that’s been the problem.

Little Robin red breast keeps on checking out the old wall for juicy bugs. and Woody woodpecker calls every morning to fill his tank from the suet ball hanger. He refused to show his face today though, we could only see his bottom hanging out……lol

I hope the weather was kinder to you today. Take care. x

about same here HB - I was freezing at work really was, sun was out so that was nice. lovely you feed the birds so well - great robin pic :)) We have an issue with our greenhouse - we have severe gales that blew something into it and smashed window :D letting cold kill germs, bugs in it before we replace. Although a strawberry plant is growing !! weird

Same weather here today too Homebird. The snow flurries were dancing about the ground like lots of mini whirl pools.
Wow its cold!

Sorry about the damage Paul. I've lost count of the number of panes we have had to replace over the years. One year it blew practically all the front end off. (and Michael Cane was nowhere near...lol)

It's bitter now Lulu, I just nipped out for milk and it's already -1.5c and icy underfoot at 5.50......it's going to be a real cold one tonight....Brrrr.

Its really a day of change here as well, lovely blue sky, sunshine and swirling snow all at the same time, it did start to thaw at one time but soon went back to freezing which makes it worse when venturing out, luckily I did put my heater back into the g,house last week and set it on the freeze setting so was prepared....
Our daughter walked in the door and her first words were.........
" Its B.....y colder out there now than it was when we had that heavy snow and ice"
I guess none of us are going around the fair, lol............

You`ve captured todays changes beautifully Homebird.

Lol Lincs. We used to say it's too cold to snow. Doesn't seem to be like that now.....
Thanks Stroller. Nothing better to do today than watch the birds and the weather...lol.

We would have stayed in the warm but had a 1 o'clock funeral to attend - the umbrella blew inside out on our walk from the car and the church had no heating - grr! Definitely not a good day - :o(

That just about sums it up here to Hb, blizzard then sun, but none settled thankfully..

11 Mar, 2013

Oh! dear Shirley what a crappy day for you. You must have been perished.
Glad it's not settled Sl. It's going to be a cold one tonight though. Cuddle up and keep warm....

11 Mar, 2013

Cheers Hb, yes it's already zero out there now.

Same here Homebird, but without the sunshine...ha ha!!!!!
Horrid day!!
The snow is settling on the roads now and the wind is blowing it up causing horrendous driving conditions!!

11 Mar, 2013

Great blog Hb....So cold here too, the wind is unbearably cold, isnt it?

11 Mar, 2013

I'm glad the snow didn't stay for you, and nice to know the plants in your greenhouse don't seem to be affected much by the cold :o)

Just been watching the horendous conditions in Sussex. Poor people stuck in their cars for up to 12 hours. That must have been awful. Makes me realise how lucky I am. I should have set of to my daughters at 7 this morning but arranged for her to work from home until I can get there when the roads are a bit better later this morning. It's very icy here and I have seen a couple of 4x4's sliding up our hill. Council gritters... never been near...

12 Mar, 2013

We're lucky here too - no snow but bitterly cold. I think it's colder now than it's been all winter :o(
Take care !

Keep safe and warm ...
I hope your garden gets better weather soon ...

12 Mar, 2013

We're getting back to normality on the roads in Sussex now, Hb - Police estimated there were about 300 minor shunts/accident in 24 hours! I really hope we've seen the last of the snow for a very long time .....

hi h.b ... same here too lol ... blooming frezzzin lol .. hope ur well .. i really need to get in garden .. have dun 10 seed trays , wen we had sun , but now its awfull out there yuk ...

We had horizontal snow here - the wind was very strong. Fortunately it never really took hold, although some was still lying in shady areas the next morning. At one point, there was a quite thick flurry while the garden was bathed in sunshine. I rushed out and took a photo, but the snow is completely invisible in the resulting picture so that didn't work!

Hywel, it looks set to be a tad milder from today. Thank goodness. It's forecast rain though for us from tomorrow. I can't believe I'm saying this but bring it on if its going to be above freezing.
Tt it will be nice to get back in the garden won't it. The GP put me on antibiotics for a chest infection last Monday. I only went for a med review and happened to start coughing. I thought it was just a heavy cold that was making me feel crappy. Feeling better already. :o))

Shirley, it was awful for you down there. I'm glad everything is back to normal for you. I don't want to see snow ever again.......except on Christmas cards. There will be a lot of 'no claims bonuses' lost through it. 300...wow that just shows how it took everyone by surprise. Mind you it was more the freezing conditions that was the main problem wasn't it.

Cristina, I hope your seedlings are safe from the cold. You have been a busy girl. Not started mine yet it's been too cold. Hopefully they will catch up if I start them off later.

Melchi, I did the same thing...lol. I was lucky to have found one photo from about a dozen that was reasonable.:o)) The rest of the snow has gone today from under the hedges. It's supposed to be milder for the next few days.

This afternoon was actually rather nice - I got quite a lot done. We all need a good spell of Spring-like weather. Fingers crossed, but breath not held :-)

15 Mar, 2013

Breath not held here either and some very cold nights forecast for the coming week. Just informed other half that I'm going to start my seeds off in our kitchen....he's not too pleased about that....why not put them on the windowsill in utility or boot room he says! Trouble is, there's not much light and gets very hot in the utility, so needs must so they say!

17 Mar, 2013

Indeed. We have lovely large windows in this house, and tiny narrow windowsills! The only place I can really start seeds off is on the floor just inside the French windows. Even I have to agree that's not the easiest or most convenient place. (It's where they always go, though!)

17 Mar, 2013

In the end...iv'e put them into my studio!! Because I knew that either the dogs would knock them over or the whole lot would get caught while drawing the curtains!

18 Mar, 2013

Lol! The things we do for horticulture!

18 Mar, 2013

Indeed!
And I found a vole nesting near my veggie patch! Can't kill them or relocate them but I don't want it turning into vole city either...what to do?!

19 Mar, 2013

No experience of them - fortunately!
