Dearest friends,

One is most sorry you were unable to join one’s husband and I at ones country retreat. One thoroughly enjoyed oneself, shooting, swimming, and taking the waters and treatments in the Spa. Rejuvenated as one feels now, one would enjoy boring you all with the details of ones short break at Thoresby Hall. Here are one’s rooms. You can just about see one’s Husband waving to you through the window. (See, the x above above the window)

Once inside one walks through the Great Hall and mounts the stairs to ones rooms….

……just one moment whilst one removes a plum from one’s mouth and then one will continue one’s tour…………… ……..That’s better……………. The old jaw was aching.

Thoresby is a magnificent old house which has been taken over and run as a Spar and short break hotel. The grounds were a pleasure to walk around, although, at this time of year, there are next to no flowers to see. There are lovely walks amongst the trees though.

I think this area would make a very nice painting.

It’s a pity the rose garden was at the end of the season with maybe just a dozen old blooms out. I want to go back in the summer to see all these old roses in bloom. Some of them dated back to 1100.

It’s lovely to walk around the set lawns and beds. The stone statues and follies are very attractive too.

Back inside the house the great hall is warm and welcoming.

The library fireplace has the most remarkable carved wood panel and I could look all day at it and the figures of Robin Hood and Little John who stand at either side of the hearth.

The west wing with croquet lawns and flower beds.

All in all a very pleasant few days with really good food, entertainment, walks and spar. So nice that it is only a 30 minute drive away from home……Oh! and it surprised me how well T could shoot too. I’d better watch myself……..

Well well! One would never have guessed homebird! lol...gorgeous place, although like you, I think I would prefer to see the 'exterior policies' in the summer time. The interior is 'simply wonderful darling'! :))

Thanks everyone.
You were very welcome Scottish, you didn't tell me I would need a map just to find the dining room......
Sixpence the carvings were amazing. I want to have a go at painting the woodland shed area sometime over the winter.
Lincs I didn't catch sight of Mr Carson, but he obviously kept everything in order. I would love to have stayed longer.
I'm glad you liked the look of it Diane. I wish I had taken more photos but we were so busy having a go at all the activities.
Nariz. It was a real change for us and we thoroughly enjoyed it.
Yorks I felt right at home......
Waddy, T was a bit nervous as he had no idea what to expect in the Spar and the mud treatment we had came as a bit of a surprise to him....lol
Karen, it was a home from home darling....except I could fit my whole house and the garden into the library....lol
Dried I didn't hear or see any ghost but that's probably due to the effects of all the wine I seem to have drank. I want to go back...

That looked a wonderful place to stay, and I'm pleased you had an enjoyable time. What a fantastic house !
I'm glad you took the plum out of your throat though ... I wouldn't have wanted you to choke ;o)

What a beautiful house, and what lovely grounds. No wonder you want to go back!

One really must spend all one's spare time cleaning those windows, as one clearly does not want dust & grime marring one's view of the countryside. Or does one employ another one to do one's work perhaps? What a wonderful time you must have had.

Lol Hywel. I was getting on my own nerves.
Melchi, there is old and new melded together really nicely. We plumped for the historic rooms in the old house rather than the modern ones at the back. Whoever planned the overall hotel did an amazing job keeping the old intact while linking it to the new.
Dwyllis, one would not know where to start.
Well guys, I reckon if I had lived in the times when the house was privately owned it would be just my luck to be hidden away as a scullery maid instead of the lady I would want to be........

Thanks Sandra, Dd and Klahanie. I really want to go again in the spring and the summer for the gardens. I want to try my hand at the archery and see more of the plays and other entertainment they have planned throughout the day next time.
