My garden in the last week of October.

Well, I managed to get the rest of the geraniums dug up today and potted up for overwintering in the greenhouse and conservatory, along with the tender fuchsias and a delphinium. I was surprised to see there were some things flowering around the garden. The Gladioli have been amazing this year…

There is even a water lily just about to open and another bud with it’s head out of the water. I’m taking bets on whether it will come to flower now the weather has turned quite cold here..

My lovely, new this year, Dianthus are sending up fresh flowers even though the old ones in the garden stopped flowering in the summer, probably due to the very wet weather we have all had to contend with. They really dislike wet conditions..

The Fuchsia and Hydrangea cuttings have rooted. I potted them on into separate pots today..

I must pick the crab apples tomorrow and try my hand at Crab apple Jelly…

When I open the conservatory windows to feed the fish, the scent from these water hawthorn is so sweet.

It’s the first time I have seen berries on this Sarcococca.

…and the cutting I took from a Weigela Rosea earlier this year is flowering!!!

Aren’t the Acers beautiful in their autumn colours…

..and finally here are the rest of the things with a flower or berry or two…

I hope you have managed to get your tender plants sorted out for the winter. The sooner spring comes around the better for me…

There's still a lot to see in your garden Homebird. I hope the cold snap we're going to have soon, won't spoil them too much for you.
I agree about the spring. Usually I'm not bothered about winter, but this year I'm not looking forward to it. ... Maybe it's because I'm getting old lol ;o)

A very creative blog - wish I knew how to do that!
It is a real patchwork of pretty colours.

Enjoyable blog. You still have so much going on your garden. We have had a very wet & cold spring over here, but the last two days have been sunny & warm, though high winds. This morning the sun is streaming in through the lounge window & not much wind at all. Lawns finally got mown yesterday, as it has been way too wet to do them over past 3 weeks! Hope everything does well through the winter for you.

Wow you have still got lots going on. I've bitten the bullet and cut back quite a lot this last couple of days. It's to get very cold up here. Hope it doesn't come down there so soon.
Great pics and I like how you've created a collage. It saves lots of time uploading them, doesn't it ;)

It all looks great, Homebird. Mine is getting a bit windblown. There's still lots there, but it's getting obscured by the autumn leaves. I must get my pelargoniums inside! Quite a few things are responding to the late sunshine - but too late, I'm afraid. I've planted a few new bulbs - just the tulips left to go in. I always want to cut the grass just before it starts raining - must do it, though.

Wonderful way to view your beautiful flowers HB, still loads of colour, we have pruned everything down now, and all but the Brugs are inside the conservatory.....preparing to batten down the hatches!!

Yep there's still a lot going on there, and very pretty too...Most of ours is done now...Looking for overwintering spots myself for Geraniums and Zonals...too many for the Sun room, will probably invest in a mini Plastic Greenhouse type protector for Winter...have started repotting....

I didn't know the Water Hawthorn was scented Hb, how nice, must get one for the Pond for next Spring....

It's been so mild lots of rain, but most trees in our Garden and surrounding us are still in full leaf, save the Staghorn that throws itself everywhere....

Fab. You still have so much colour and things looking great Hb.

I do like the way you have done this blog, very clever, you still have lots to brighten your garden Homebird, its grand isn`t it, I also have gladioli flowering and sad to say I spotted two hidden away that are just forming but its turned really cold now so I doubt whether they`ll make it, strange thing is I planted them all on the same day, I`ve already taken some out and are drying them off, my waterlilies were not very good this year, I think it was lack of sunshine, our fish were not very active either so we weren`t the only ones missing out on summer, lol..

Thanks so much everyone.
Hywel it's been hailstone here this afternoon and you could feel the temperature dropping by the hour. It's bitterly cold now. Glad I got the plants finished yesterday. I don't dread the winter as much now as I did when I had to work through it....that's one upside of being retired lol..
Wildrose I use Picassa to do the collages. It's so easy.
Dwyllis...warm sun through the windows....how lovely. It's turned really cold here.
Hi Scottish, it has turned really cold here. I noticed snow was forecast for you this weekend. I hope it doesn't linger. I find it's so much easier and quicker to do collages than to upload separate photos.
Melchi, our lawns are too , to mow so perhaps they will get done one fine dry day next month...or next year....
Hope you get your plants undercover soon. T says there is ice on our garage roof tonight. Brrrrr..
Dd, I like that...batten down the hatches. It's been so cold today I have done just that....lol
Crissue I will send you a piece of the water hawthorn in spring if you would like some. It has a lovely strong sweet scent. Over the last two days the leaves have been fairly flying off our trees. The lawns are carpeted with them.
Cinders this really cold snap will see everything off now I bet.
Lincslass it's turned icy cold here today so I reckon I have lost my bet on the lily flowering...lol. I will have to cut the rest of the gladioli and just hope they open up in a vase. I can't grumble as they have done really well this year despite the weather. I am almost glad this gardening year is coming to an end and just want to look forward to a much better year next year. Hopefully with much warmer dryer weather.. :o))

Yes, Homebird, I got out there today - cut the lawn and got the pots in and under shelter. It's not so cold here as it seems to be where you are, but a definite chill! Supposed to be warmer by Sunday.

We woke up to the first fine topping of snow this morning. I don't remember getting snow this soon in the winter before.....

27 Oct, 2012

That is a surprise! Are you high up? We rarely see snow in Southport, and it lies even more rarely. It has to be a very severe winter - we saw plenty two years ago, though!

27 Oct, 2012

We are 300ft higher than you but 300ft lower than the Pennines. The snow has thawed now. Hopefully no more for another few months....

27 Oct, 2012

Let's hope so!

Blimey so much colour Hb, looks really nice :-)

27 Oct, 2012

That's very kind of you I would like that in Spring....

Our Trees and the surrounding Trees are holding onto their leaves....at the moment...except the Staghorn say no more...lol...

I used to have Picassa on my other PC, I'll have to download it again, it's free....and I've just gone over to Google Chrome, what a difference....

You have some lovely Penstemons, do you know their names, I bough two new ones last summer and lost one of them this year, altho I've had one for nearly ten years, from a cutting someone gave me.You say you've had snow already, we're in Leicestershire not too far away, and its its missed us thank gooodness.
I've also got a cutting of Weigela Rosa from my neighbour, not big enought to go out yet, probably after the winter Brrrrrrrrrr! :)Still lots of colour in your garden :)

Thanks Sl, after such a strange summer it's amazing to see anything still going in the garden isn't it.
I'll pm you when it's time to pot some up Sue.

Thankyou Gralew, I lost 3 last winter so only have 5 now. Beech Park, Heavenly Blue, Picotee Red, Windsor red, and Czar/Black Knight. I've never tried taking cuttings until this year and wasn't very successful. In fact no success...lol will try again though. Glad you didn't get the snow. Thankfully it came and went very quickly. It's nice to get cuttings from others isn't it. There are some lovely and generous people on here who like to share their plants.
Thanks very much Cristina. Roll on spring so we can get cracking with seed sowing etc. sooner the winter is past the better for me. It will be nice to get your seedlings started a bit earlier next year with the help of your heater. It's a good feeling to get the plants all potted up and saved for next year. It will save a bit of money too.
Good luck with the pond waterfall revamp, will look out for your photos.

That's great homebird...love the last collage! I bought a pelargonium this week, a scented one that I had a few years back and really regretted getting rid of.....'Attar of Roses'. I bet you know it, it is filling my conservatory with scent now and hopefully this time it won't get too woody like the last one I had...any tips for me? :))

31 Oct, 2012

Hi Karen, thankyou. I think Attar of Roses was one of the first scented pelargoniums I ever bought. I just cut down any stems that are looking leggy and use their side shoots for cuttings. The cuttings strike quite easily throughout the year I've found. One year it had an awful attack of white fly while we were on holiday and I had to cut it right down to almost soil level but it came back slowly.

Thank you Homebird. Great advice! :)
