Busy burrowing bee....

T noticed this bee digging a hole in the lawn yesterday evening.

He was tunneling into the rough area beneath the hedge using his legs to move the soil into a pile behind himself.

Maybe he will overwinter there as some do, hope he wont get 'run over' with your mower Hb!!!

Great pictures HB...possibly a Bombus lapidarius (hope the spelling is right. I had one nesting in one of my borders which got flooded - obviously very little I could do for it. One did however seem to survive - I did a little blog on a soggy bumble bee

Yes, that's what I thought. I'm quite enjoying trying to id some of the visitors to my garden. Very easy this year because there are very few!

I have only seen a handful of butterflies this year, but today we spotted a tiny pale blue one.

Wow! . . . that's a lot of soil for such a little bee to move. Great photos Homebird.

We haven't seen him since. I don't know if he is still in there or flown away....It was fascinating to watch him pulling the soil out and pushing it into a heap with his hind legs.
