Whitwell Wood

Fed up with the grey wet weather and feeling couped up, we decided to take a rainy day walk with Emily, Sam and my daughter. Son in law was at work so he couldn’t come too. Kitted up in wellies and raincoats we set off at 10 o-clock and headed for the woods on a bear hunt…
The two little ones love to look for different wild flowers and bugs and crawlies.
It was fun paddling through all the puddles on the dirt track out of the village towards the woods. Some of the puddles were so deep the rainwater poured into their wellies, but they didn’t care as we poured it out and popped them back on…As we walked the clouds broke and the sun came out.
When we entered the wood the first job for any intrepid explorer is to find a stout walking stick.

T walked ahead and hid behind the trees and growled and shook the branches. The children were so excited, believing they definitely heard the bears. We walked through the centre of the woods until we came to the stream where we had a fun half hour crossing back and to across on the stepping stones and fallen branches that bridged the stream.

Sam tried his hand at walking along a fallen tree, looking for bugs and snails.

A little further on we come to the Ginny Spring. The best spring water you ever tasted. We showed the children how to cup their hands to catch the water to drink. They had a great time trying. More water up their sleeves than in their mouths…

Sorry this photo is blurred it’s just to show you Samuel scooping up the spring water, (I should say trying to…lol)

There were lots of lovely orchids blooming……

Inevitably little legs got really tired so a light porter was employed. We had a picnic when we reached the centre of the wood on our way back from the spring and then Samuel was so tired he fell to sleep on T’s shoulder.

Looks like you all had a good day. Kids would not have minded the weather at all. They never do - it's only adults that complain!
I live about 100 metres from the river and the woods - kids always enjoy going for a walk and to find things out. When they first came home from Asia - we used to pretend to the older 2 that there was crocodiles in the river so they wouldn't venture along on their own. That only worked until the other kids told them that crocodiles dont live in Scotland.
Enjoyed your pictures HB :)

No crocodiles living wild in Scotland ???
I learn something new every day.
Thank goodness for GoY :o)))

Thankyou everyone. We did have a lovely walk Sticki, the spring is hard to find for anyone who hasn't been shown where it is. The children did really well to walk as far as they did Sheila as Samuel is only 17 months old and Emily just 3yrs. They much prefer the outdoors just as we do. Didn't see any signs of crocodiles near the stream Scottish, they all moved to Scotland because the weather's better up there... We may have heard a haggis or two though Niverdeen. I love our wood Ojibway. My dad used to take us most weeks and tell us about the cunning foxes in the wood who never got caught by the Sunday Hunt.

Night Night sleep tight Tt.
Sheila I think it keeps them healthy and strong . We were looking for a suitable climbing tree for Emily but didn't find one. We like to introduce them to as many activities and experiences as we can.
Thanks G.mage, they are such a pleasure to be with. We used to take bottles to fill for the older peolpe when we were children. They believed it helped all kinds of ailments.

Well who are we to argue with that Hb. Bless em. Maybe it has got healing properties!

Oh that takes me back to when the children were small. How lovely. Even to my childhood too, when we used to make a den in the woods. You couldnt do that today.

What a lovely day, and not a penny paid out!! the children will remember days like these, splendid HB.

Thanks all.
G.mage, I feel better for the good drink (or was it the walk in the fresh air)
Cinders it's such a shame we have to be so careful with the children nowadays. I can't wait though for them all to be old enough to camp out in the back garden as my children did. We didn't get a lot of sleep though....lol The tree at the top of the garden is a perfect climbing tree for when the are a little older. My son and daughter spent hours climbing it when we first moved here.
Dd, it's such a pleasure to do things with the grandchildren that we did with our son and daughter when they were young. They still remember the fun things we did together and want to do it with their children.
Sl it's so good to get out with the children and see things anew through their eyes and imaginations. The orchids were lovely, we obviously went at just the right time to see them.
