The things they say..

A comment by Shirley Tulip got me thinking about doing this blog. The other day mother in law asked me what was the tall plant with the feather duster on top. ( Liatris spicata) Shirley says, speaking of a conversation with her Mum ….a bit like the lovely red, dark-stemmed Dahlias she has this year … I quote: “Well, that’s not right, love, Dahlia stems should be green!”

Someone in garden centre once asked her Mum what the plant was , she said reading label slowly and pronounced like "Orb - breet - ia" being Aubrieta

sorry not friends or family but it did make me smile :)))))

At a drinks party we went to after moving in to our first house our next door neighbour asked what I had been planting. There was a strange look when I said 'Cotten Easters' (Cotoneasters) that was 30 years ago and I still cringe.

My friend calls them that and I used to think that's how you pronounced it until someone at the GC very kindly told me how they said it. I only just found out how you pronounce heuchera lol.

I often wonder about the pronounciation of various plants as I have heard so many variations. For instance, I say "clem-ay-tis" but have heard "CLEM-atis." And is a "sick-la-men" really a "cycle-men?"

Me and my younger sister were at the garden centre(I was looking to buy a conifer.) Since I could not see any I asked for assistance. The young chap walked us over to where the conifers were, and asked which one in particular I wanted....? To that my sister( who is not interested in gardening at all) replied: "what do they do?" Me and the assistant started laughing since she was so very serious when asking the question, and her face looked very puzzled.
