Were your relatives involved in agriculture, Gillian ?
One of my college friends lived on a farm in Dunsfold in the late sixties/ early seventies. She emigrated to Canada and married an English farmer who had settled there.

I see you're from Sussex, ever heard of Dunsfold? Working on my family tree it seems I have many relatives from that area.

These are fast-growing shrubs and can easily grow eight feet in a season. You can be really vicious with it in the spring, cutting it right down to a small stump

Cut back large wood to buds and cut out small wood now.
In March if you live in the South or April if you live in the North, cut down to required height removing die-back and frost damage. feed, top dress with compost round root area.

And doesn't it make a difference Holly!! This morning I was at work and it was grey, damp, and spitting and I felt soooo.....tired! This afternoon, sun is out and I'm raring to go! (Maybe it's just the work tho!! lol)
