Hummingbird Hawkmoth

Oh wow lucky you!!! I've never seen one of these!!,Dawns had them on her valerian too,I grow it in the hope that one day I ll be lucky :-)

That's brilliant Holly I found the day a caterpillar of the
Hawk moth I didn't realize it was the hummingbird one I've just googled it ....

Beautiful, arent they. I havent seen one this year. Yes Kathy, they love valerian. Maybe if we actually sat and waited long enough, one would appear, Im sure you will see one, one day on yours.

Wonderful. I grow valerian but the flowers are long gone. I will have to watch more carefully next year ...if I can spot one in my garden.

My chair is near french windows Kathy so I had a good view... you have to be very quick as they hover around the flowers quickly then go off....hope you get to see one, I find they come late afternoon....

Oh! how lovely and how lucky to see one. A friend had one in her garden two years ago but, although I have lots of Valerian, have never seen one. In fact, there was so much V. that I actually dug some huge roots out a week ago and binned it. I encourage the birds with a constant supply of mixed food so I suppose they might eat any caterpillars. I rarely see any moths but plenty of butterflies especially this year.

I am pleased for you Holly and well done on capturing it on your camera, I have loads of Valerian growing here but afraid to say if one of them hovered anywhere near me I'd be gone like a shot, so I'd rather not see one, I am absolutely petrified of them, daft as it seems I love butterflies though...

Yes a lot of butterflies this year linmar.... I was lucky I was in the right place to see it... I read they like the buddleia as well.... hope you get to see one, ive never seen the caterpillars.....

How fabulous Holly, lovely to be able to see these in your own garden. The only other time I have seen these, was in a hotel garden in Fethiye, Turkey. I remember standing there, watching, in amazement.
