A 'corking' idea....well I think so.

Christmas is drawing nearer and we’ll all be imbibing in our favourite wines (nothing out of the ordinary for some) I don’t wish to sadden you so early with the prospect of Christmas shopping but there is a gardening connection.
If you save all the corks, then in Spring, hold each one with a pair of pliers then drill a hole in it. They make very useful eye protectors for garden canes. I give them to Barnaby to play with (suspect he likes the smell) when he gets bored they have a ‘stressed’ appearance. That’s just a matter of taste of cause but they do look ‘organic’ in the garden.
The downside is that if you have lots of canes you’ll need more bottles of wine.

I'm not sure that the "downside" is all that much of a downside Heron. An excellent reason to imbibe in more. Great idea. Thanks for the blog.

Oh dear, I`m not sure I could drink more than one glass of wine at Christmas! I`d better try harder so I can make my own cane toppers then.. Would a nice rose or two be ok do you think?...lol!;o))

The only drink I have is a glass of wine on Christmas day lol, so I think it will be a long time before I get my eye protector ;o)
I use other things though ....

Glad I'm not the only one who doesn't drink much alcohol!

great idea Heron, not really a wine drinker myself but will get rest of the family to save corks for me..

14 Nov, 2010

At that rate I will never get any eye protectors...I donĀ“t drink any form of alcohol.

I wouldn't drink it either but it's a shame to waste it after you've bought it.;-)

Heron
It seems you have attracted a very select section of GOY members
My experience of them to date is that most of them like nothing better than to sit in there gardens in the summer with there favorite tipple and there laptop.
Like the idea of the corks.not suitable for my jamie he would get the flavour and swallow them

Thanks for that Heron great idea, my daughter will have no trouble keeping me supplied with corks and it does not have to be Christmas lol.

Just told OH of the comments on here, to which he said "posh person, no screw cap bottles of wine!" ........

14 Nov, 2010

Oh I had forgotten screw caps ST seems I will not have as many as I had hoped then.

I don't drink, but the bottles of wine we get for my OH all seem to have screw tops, too!

14 Nov, 2010

I will gladly accept all the bottles (unopened), and return the corks by return. ;o)

Oh you are such a publicly spirited person Littlelegs, so kind and thoughtful, you'd better tell your postman to pump up his tyres to cope with all the extra weight :-))))

Cristina, we only have a bottle at weekends but the empties soon mount up. When our own brew is ready we'll be self sufficent for quite a while. We have to use new corks for the wine which is just as well as we can't get enough for the garden. The corks don't fall off and make it easier to press the cane into the soil.
Not sure if they also make wine but 'The Good Life' with Sue Perkins should be well worth watching. I think it's on tonight.

Hi Heron, good idea for the canes. My solution is to put bluetack in empty snail shells and paint them with clear nail varnish. Am I mad or what? :)))

21 Nov, 2010

What a good idea, It's the first useful thing I've ever heard of for making use of snail shells, artistic too.
