Thats a hard one to decide. I have read that aboriginal people eat these when fully ripe but on another site read all green parts are toxic. I personally dont grow anything i know is toxic because little ones play in my garden. But its surprising how many plants are poisonoius and are in ordinary gardens. What do you think spritz?
On question - what is this

Judy, try googling solanum aviculare or kangaroo apple. Its the same nightshade family as potatatoes but not actually potatoes. Hope this helps you. Ps spritz is always right.

they add it to some compost its like crystals when dry and swells up just like clear jelly when wet. check your packet it should say if its added
On question - goo.!!
19 Aug, 2008
Just wondering if its from your bags of compost because it could be water retaining jelly. Or do you think its something else?

I have magpies pigeons and seagulls in the garden but they dont come to table because it has a roof. I think they cant land. I put out mostly sunflower seeds and attract tits finches and robins. (And we have a cat) It brightens my winter days to see them. In the summer i put the table away and in the winter when im not using garden so much i place it right in front of our sitting room so we can watch them from the sofa. (but not too near the window incase they crash into it).

Small yellow flowers. Its like a vine. A bit like squash but with smaller darker leaves, they also have prickles. I guess there could be different types but thats what the ones i once grew looked like. When the cucumbers start they look like very prickly gherkins.

angie have you read earlier questions on caterpillars - people have suggested fleese and nets over your veg in spring so that butterflies lay on nasturtians instead.

Thanks everyone you have been so kind i have found them on a mail order nursery and im going to order a mirabelle de nancy and a victoria plum. I didnt realise we call them cherry plums in uk. Whether they will produce fruit in my cold wet scottish garden remains to be seen but its worth a go.

They will eat nasturtians. And ive just read that some people dust their veg with flour to keep them off.

i thought the same and let them eat every single leaf of my gooseberries. no butterflies. found out they grow into gooseberrie flies? next time might shake them off for the birds! maybe you could grow something you dont mind getting eaten and put them on that like nasturtians. i heard catterpillars like nasturtians so i grew loads this year but still no butterflies. im very envious of people who have butterflies in their garden. apparently butterflies are very fussy about where they set up a colony the conditions have to be just right. good luck with yours.

I think you get a lot of fruit on blackcurrants for the space they take up if you like them. Im growing blueberries and dwarf apple trees in pots with strawberries around them but i must admit im a long way from making any jam. I think it takes time (years) untill you get plentyfull fruit. I have heard that gooseberries give pounds of fruit but ive had mine 2 years and fruit aint plentifull yet. I also think it depends where you live. I live in scotland and the thing growing best for me so far is blackcurrants. I will be intersted to hear what others say as i also want to grow plentifull fruit!
