Never be afraid to ask a question.

I grew up in the lovely surroundings of large gardens where my Dad was a head gardener. As a very little girl, stood on a pile of upturned wooden boxes, I would spend hours helping sowing seed and pricking out plants. My dad always said to me ‘If you don’t know something about gardening, never be afraid to ask. We all have to learn and we never stop improving our knowledge.’ I’m still asking questions!
Dad was right. I miss him so much but he passed on a love for horticulture which has given me so much joy. Now I am registered disabled and am unable to do as much as I would like in the garden (this is where a willing other half is wonderful)
Now I can see my daughter getting enjoyment out of her wee garden and I’m repeating what her grandfather said to me ‘If you don’t know…never be afraid to ask.’

What a lovely childhood - a treasure no one can take away!
And "Ask" applies to lots of other things as well as gardening.

Happy memories Hannah, I got my love of gardening from my mum, now I share my passion with my daughter who is as passionate about her garden as I am, its lovely to have someone to share with, our questions and plants are backwards and forwards a lot..

Great memories Hannah :) My grandfather was always in the garden, one of his brothers was a head gardener on an estate in the Scottish Borders and our elderly neighbour was a gardener to trade. I never asked questions about gardening - one of my biggest regrets!
Thanks for sharing your memories with us :)

Oh how I wish I'd paid more attention when following my Dad around the garden when I was small! He tried his best to wake up a gardening gene in me - bless him - but I had my head in the clouds and didn't turn to gardening until he'd passed on - just when I needed his advice! But ... it's strange .... some things must have entered my brain subliminally as I seem to come up with little 'gems' of knowledge just at the right time that I didn't know I had. I like to think it's my Dad behind my shoulder. :o)

That's good advice. Sometimes people can be afraid to ask, incase they sound silly, but that's how we get to know things.
It's nice to know you're saying the same thing to your daughter, as your father said to you. I hope it's passed down the generations :o)

Can I add something to this, never be afraid to make a mistake either, that is also how we learn. Thank you for your lovely memories of your dad and I am glad your little one is learning to love the garden - hope you have loads and loads of fun together in your garden.
