Where Have the Birds Gone?

Sitting this morning in that quiet silence, golden light filtering through the autumn leaves of the birch, I noticed that all the seed I’d put out just yesterday was still laying undisturbed on the feeder. Even peanuts, which means no chickadees. I listened into the deep silence and found only a rush and rustle through the over-standing birch sending down a litter of golden leaves shuffling onto a carpet of brown broken grass.

Autumn. And a quick one. Leaves are falling as quickly as the color changes. Hot afternoons have brought on childhood memories of October afternoons, Harvest decorations and even Halloween. That time of year comes much earlier this far north. The little bunch of Junco that found my feeder this spring developed into a few families, growing up around this food, looking brighter and healthier each day. I saw developing rivalries as each new bird came into adulthood.

Now flown. With a signal from one crisp night, they took to flight, moving out of this country south to warmer country for the winter. All those new birds on an instinctive journey away from this easy life I’ve been giving them. I’m hoping that at least well fed they have more chance all together out there in that big world…….lol. And I’m still here at the feeder, watching the summer end, changing the feed for the chickadee and woodpecker. Good luck little Junco, hope to see you all again in the spring.

Early Autumn is so productive and colours are so lovely but late Autumn can be quite a sad time of year.

Thank you Peonyrose. It's late autumn for me, birds have flown and the ice crystals are stealing in. No killing fr*^# yet but could be any day. Lovely and sad.

I bet the autumn is spectacular there, with all the wonderful colours, and then the winter, somewhat harsher than ours i'd guess. But before we all know, spring arrives and another year has began. Something to always look forward to. :o)))))

I bet those little birds will be back in the Spring, GT, they will know you are there waiting :) We have had a few chilly mornings here over the last week but still warm enough to go for a walk without a jacket. I love your blue skies - seem so much more vivid than ours. Hope those frosts stay away from you for a while longer.

Thank you. So far it has been a sunny and golden autumn. Cold in the morning, couldn't go without the jacket anymore here, but with the sunny days it keeps holding just enough heat. We've had more than our fair share of these blue skies, hot and beautiful summer this year. I'll miss the birds, but they will be back. :-) Seems fall is a little longer each year. I can't believe that anything still lives outside this time of year here. But the leaves are falling as quick as turning so I'm not fooled. I'm bedding down perrenials at the nursery as we speak. :-)

Ah, thank you San. It was so quiet and I was missing the birds......it is a little sad. I teared up myself on this round. :-) I do hope that your winter comes easier, that was miserable last year. Here we're hoping for good deep snow. We've needed that for a while.

Thank you Avis. Autumn makes me so still and nostalgic, the air silencing of birds was a bit shocking. I've had droves this year, forgot they would be leaving! Maybe two tables for next season? :-)

Great blog, GT! A little "nostalgic" perhaps? Are you starting to feel "SAD"? Here we have had a lovely summer but now the weather is turning very cold & in some rural areas they are forecast frost for tonight! Here we are forecast a min of 4C for tonight!

We are also seeing the leaves begin to change colour, I saw a magnificent tree in the Cambridge Botanical Gardens last Tuesday. It may have been a Liquidamber tree, never having seen one before I'm not sure. Couldn't get a close up of it as it was on the other side of a lake there. But the red leaves were very intense. At the entrance, on a board they had written things of interest to see together with a grid reference to make them easy to find. Liquidamber was on there.

Thanks. Yes nostalgic sadness.....gets me every fall. It comes and goes here before you can take it in. Blows in at the first 0C somewhere in the valley and then we ride the edge for a few weeks until the ground starts to freeze back up. You sound almost as cold as here, very unexpected! I just saw someone else commenting they were feeling the cold. I didn't think it would be that cold! Frost!

The tree sound interesting and lovely. All our natives here are yellow in autumn, other than a viburnum, so I've been noting things that are red or something. The amur maples here are the brightest though my new sheubert chokecherries are going from magenta to scarlet. Thats a competitor. Have you posted any pics of the liquidamber tree?

Yes, I've just posted a photo in my pictures. I only have the one because it is on the other side of a pond there & I couldn't get any closer. On the 28th I'll visit the CBG again & see if I can get more photos.

Unfortunately the battery on my phone had almost run out before I could visit the glasshouses there so I want to make another visit soon & take pictures of the plants in them.

During the coming week I'll be making a blog with some of the photos I took on the 14th. So keep a look out.
