Do you watch 'Songs of praise'?

Tonights Songs of Praise was very interesting as it came from villages about and around Halifax. One of these villages caught my eye it was that of Todmorden and in the local churchyard they have started to use some spare space to grow vegetables! The Vicar was delighted that the ground was being worked on by all who wanted to from children to folks without gardens and others who wanted more land to work on. All the veg. grown can be picked by anyone, hungry or otherwise, thus spreading the kind and generous word to those who pass by. What a wonderful thought and such a brilliant idea all thought up by one lady, they are also using the railway station and pots and grow bags all around the village. A great way of ‘spreading the word’ I think!! :~)

Great idea, just hope they don't dig too deep in the churchyard!

I don't know what to think of it really. It sounds like a good idea, as long as nobody wants to use one of the graves for a new burial. It might help keep some old graveyards tidier. We used to collect blackberries in a graveyard years ago.
(I only saw a bit of Songs of praise - can't stand Aled Jones. He's too full of himself)

It's not just the Churchyard, They have been growing fruit and veg on lots of otherwise unused or neglected plots of land in Todmorden for a number of years now. It was featured on the Food Programe Radio 4. The idea started with two ladies that wanted to improve the diet of schoolchildren.

Just thought that may have been Ramsbottom, more or less nextdoor!

I don't watch it,Grandmage, but as we don't live too far away from Todmorden ( a great garden centre near there ! ),I have seen it on the local news..A very good idea too..not a lot of employment in that area now,so it will be very helpful,to those more in need..Hope the idea does spread, countrywide would be great..I think also, for people who have large gardens ,and are unable to manage for any reason,..age,ill health,etc..that would be helpful if they allowed associations, clubs etc to do this ,and a way of keeping their gardens tended for free, and able to use some of the produce in return..If I was in this position,as a gardener,I would welcome a solution to the worry of not being able to no longer care for it..

Interesting, thank you - Tunbridge Wells is a Transition town (please see website of same name or Google it, if interested) - I think all the Transition towns would like to know about this.

Think the idea was to use ground that is lying fallow and anyone who is tending to a grave is welcome to harvest fruit etc and/or help out at the same time. I think its fantastic, many graveyards become overgrown and this would be one way of keeping them tidy. B. i thought you might live nearby and yes its a brilliant idea isnt it? I like the fact that anyone can share and it is encouraging the young to grow fresh produce some of who didnt know carrots etc grew in the ground and not in a plastic box at the supermarket. Thanks all, I love hearing about worthwhile projects like this dont you?

Me too Grandma , we live quite near and hope the idea spreads, such a great idea and helps to keep land that would otherwise become neglected put to good use and look wellcared for too;0)

It does sound a very good idea.
Songs of Praise was once held in the town where I live, and the BBC wanted to start the film in a local garden with Pam Rhodes presenting . . . because I run a gardening group, I had a phone call from the BBC(!) to ask me to recommend a beautiful garden. No, not mine, lol. :))

Hi Karen, Pp. Dd.Sheila & Cris. Its brilliant isnt it and I agree Pp. that some graveyards become very neglected and this way makes them very pleasant places to visit. Its brilliant and simple really. Hey Sheila your garden IS beautiful and could easily have been used.

Kind words Gill, but the "girl" who hosted the BBC was the right choice as she made them all cakes . . . not my speciality!

I'm sure you could have russelled up something Sheila, scones, jam + cream or something similar, I bet you are a good cook.

My best scones come from M&S! But as I have MILD Chronic Fatigue, I couldn't have coped with the pressure. :))
