Sounds a wonderful collection any tips?

Beautiful Gilli, I wish I had room for roses. My mum always had them in the garden when we were kids but I remember how much they hurt if you fell on them while playing. :~((

Your poor Mum's roses Ian!
19 Sep, 2009
I think you should be crowned Rose Queen, Gilli, what an amazing collection.
Ian, my daughter is like you, she still hates roses because she fell into a rose bed off her bike when she was young :)
19 Sep, 2009
wow Gilli. and you know all the names to, bet they keep you busy :o) lovely collection
19 Sep, 2009
Lovely collection Gilli. Bet your garden smells heavenly !! :-))

Do you fancy coming over to England and stoping off in Cheshire to put the rest in MY garden :o)))
Pleeeasee!!!

Then she can pop down the M6 to mine Swanky !! lol :-))

Fantastic collection. I'm surprised that you've got room for anything else even though I know you have.
19 Sep, 2009
I didn't feel sorry for the roses when I was trying to get myself out of them. Torn and ripped clothes and me too.
Gee, I can empathise with your daughter entirely.......OUCH

Thanks everyone.
Drc....lots of tips. The main one is 'plant only disease resistant varieties'....LOL
Ian.....there is always room for roses. How about some miniatures? I bet your Mum wasn't pleased when you fell in her bushes. My brother fell into a huge blackberry patch when he was swinging on a rope once. We had to get the fire department to get him out. LOL
Gee.....Funny you should say that. I was crowned Rose Queen in infants school when I was about 7. Got a photo somewhere....hee hee hee
San....keeps me busy just deadheading them all. :o)
Sue...Some days the fragrance is marvellous and others...nothing. Must have to do with the weather.
Swanky.....You get me a ticket and I'll be right over. :o)
Toto.....My flower beds are full again. Fancy coming over to help me dig new ones???
19 Sep, 2009
Tell me when and I'd love to come. Not sure I could afford the trip though.
19 Sep, 2009
I can't afford the trip either Toto.....that's why I keep trying to con people into buying my ticket for me!!! LOL
No takers yet though.

Its times like this that I wish I had a much bigger garden (and bank account) although both our gardens are a fair size, probably just need re-arranging
then I too could fill with roses and fuchsias, and more Dianthus and ... need a wembely stadium size garden

You have such a lot. I recognised Pascali and Wisky Mac and Peace. I like climbing ones a lot aswell.

I'm trying to root some cuttings of 'City of York' at the moment. It's a lovely white climber although it is a one time bloomer. If the cuttings take I've no idea where I can plant them. LOL
19 Sep, 2009
Gilli I dont know the names of most of mine, now if you were to place pics and names on another blog it would keep both of us occupied all next season .lol.....Only kidding, must look lovely.......
19 Sep, 2009
Gorgeous roses Gilli...I'm inspired to get a few more for my garden as I only have one!
19 Sep, 2009
Oh, Rose Queen, can you recommend a good peach/ apricot colored rose, with scent?
19 Sep, 2009
Lincs......the idea did cross my mind.....then I tripped it up and booted it on its way.......LOL
Fluff......only one rose??? It must be terribly lonely. You need at least 10 more!! :o)
Orgratis......OMG! I shouldn't have mentioned that little fact should I?
Yes, I can indeed recommend one. Crown Princess Margareta is apricot fading to yellowy and smells fantastic. Evelyn...another David Austin....is also a lovely peachy colour and smells lovely. Abraham Darby is lovely but leans more towards the pinky peach shades. Just Joey is a nice fragrant orangey peach hybrid tea. David Austin's new rose 'Port Sunlight' looks fantastic but I don't have experience with that one yet.

Wow what a great collection of Roses you have.........
20 Sep, 2009
What a fantastic collection. Are you thinking of opening a Rose Centre, by chance. ;o)
20 Sep, 2009
I went out to buy a ticket for you Gilli, but i walked past a garden centre and SORRY i've spent the money LoL :o)))
20 Sep, 2009
Thanks Hollyeves.
TOG - I couldn't possibly part with any of my babies. :-O LOL
Swanky - Well, if you spent the money at the garden centre, I hope you bought some roses!!! LOL
20 Sep, 2009
Thanks, Gilli. Checked David Austin's website for photos. Louise1 has three pictures of Port Sunlight on her blog "A Sunny Sept Morning" 17 Sept. Lovely, yet looks more creamy...? Like A. Darby: guess I'm looking for more pink apricot.
21 Sep, 2009
Orgratis, it's not creamy - It was just me not getting the light accurate enough !!
There are some shots of it showing it's proper colour, maybe in the 'My Garden' section of my profile.
Also look on page 2 of 'Photos'
It's actually an apricot colour and gorgeous !
21 Sep, 2009
Abraham D. is a gorgeous rose too. His blooms tend to change colour slightly with soil conditions (I think)....the ones at work are a different shade than mine at home. Mine is definitely more on the pink side than the ones at work.
21 Sep, 2009
Added it as a favorite! That seems like a good way to track plants I want to find. Otherwise, my nose is my guide!
23 Sep, 2009
LOL.....I think one of the best fragranced roses I have is David Austin's 'Gertrude Jekyll'. Another is the rugosa rose 'Hansa'. I LOVE the smell of roses.
23 Sep, 2009
Princess Gilli aka Rose Queen - What are the names of the roses in the two photos? Are these your favourites?
28 Sep, 2009
Hello GF.
The first rose, the yellow one, is called Sun Flare. It is a floribunda rose with a lovely fragrance.
The second rose is a climber called White New Dawn. It is very thorny and has no discernable fragrance. It has done pretty well this year which is good as I had given it one more year to prove itself before I shovel pruned it. So....this too is not my favourite. I do like the photo though.
I think, although I love almost all my roses, that my all time favourite is David Austin's 'Heritage'. I love the soft pink colour. I love the bloom shape. I love the fragrance. I love how vigorous it is......my only complaint would be that the blooms only last a day or so before they fall. But there are so many flowers that even when one falls there are others to take it's place. I've added a picture of 'Heritage' at the bottom of the blog. :o)
29 Sep, 2009
Princess Gilli - Thanks for the additional info and photo. My favourite of the three photos now on your blog is the Sun Flare. I chose that one because the petals seem to be just right to me whereas the Heritage petals look too crowded and the White New Dawn petals look too curly. That is what I think about the photos. As regards the actual plants I wonder whether I would be making valid comparisons here or am I seeing these differences because each variety is at a different stage of the flowering cycle?
29 Sep, 2009
What a marvellous collection Gilli. You will have plenty of work to do protecting them all for winter as per your winterizing blog
20 Oct, 2009
GF....you comparisons are quite valid. Sunflare is one of my favourites and very fragrant. Heritage is my all time favourite. It does have a lot of petals giving it an old fashioned look but that is one of the things I like about it. White New Dawn is not one of my favourites. In fact, if it hadn't performed well this year it was going to be shovel pruned. The petals are quite curly and the blooms are not very big. It has no fragrance that I can detect. I did quite like the photo though.
Pipsqueak....thank you. They are getting to be a lot of work but it is a labour of love for me. :o)
