Yippee!!! Tonight we actually had some significant rainfall. The first in weeks and weeks. It was accompanied by a wild thunderstorm but lightening with rain is not nearly as dangerous as lightening without rain.

Kamloops has been terribly smoky for the past few weeks. There are….

”....wildfires to the left of us, infernos to the right and here we are, stuck in the middle with smoke!” I’m using a bit of license with Stealers Wheel lyrics here.

The fires in BC this year have been numerous and nasty with many people having to be evacuated from their homes. Luckily for us none of them have been close enough that we have had to evacuate. Even with the long cold winter last year and the long cold spring, the amount of snowfall in the area was very low causing a low snowpack in the mountains. This area relies on the snowpack melt throughout the late spring and summer for water supply during the hot summer months. The runoff also keeps the forest floors moist which helps prevent many wildfires during the summer. This year the low snowpack allowed the forests to dry very quickly leading to extreme fire risk early in the summer. The lack of rainfall added to the problem causing tinder dry conditions in the whole province.

This is not my photo. It is borrowed from the following website…...

This is a photo of the nearest fire to us. It is about 30 km away to the east in Pritchard and only partially contained. There have been about 100 people evacuated because of this fire. The smoke has been thick and the ash has been falling on us even this far away.

There is another significant fire to the east a little further away in Sorrento also uncontained, which is adding to the havoc…...

To the south of us is the Brookmere fire which is fortunately now well under control but still belching out smoke.

A few miles to the north of us is another fire which is 50% contained. Residents have been evacutated from this area also.
To the west is a very large fire which has threatened many homes and had the entire town evacuated. It is now finally being brought under control.

And what is it like in Kamloops???

Well, maybe not after this storm. That should have cleared away some of the smoke. Thank goodness the rain dances we’ve all been doing have finally brought results.

It must be frightening to live near those fires and to be evacuated. What devastation !. I'm glad you're not too close to them Gilli. I'm glad you had some much needed rain aswell. It seems some places get too much and some get too little - there's no happy medium is there.

Oh Gilli, what an awful state to be in, We complain that we have to much rain and you are so desperate for some. I do hope the rain continues for you and subdues these terrible fires. Good luck and best wishes.

Gilli, do hope the fires dont last to long.....and you get lots of rain to help put them out........

Thanks everyone. Wildfires are a fact of life unfortunately here in BC. Its the ones that are started by human carelessness which break my heart. The ones started by lightening are just natures way.
The rain wasn't enough for the Pritchard fire. Apparently it grew in size overnight and they have extended the evacuation order area.
More lightening forecast for this afternoon.....pray for rain along with it.

I do hope rain comes to you soon. I have been complaining about lack of rain here too but don't have to face the scarey situation around you. Take care and keep safe.

Wow those fires look real scary, poor wildlife. I hope the fire near you clears soon

2 Sep, 2009

Gilli what horrible fires they are, you know us britts moan about our weather, but we get nothing like this, and hurricans and earthquakes, etc like lots of other countries get, thinking of you keep safe, pleased you had some much needed rain.

Thanks for your good wishes everyone. The fires are still burning. No rain appeared today but so far no lightening either. Thank goodness we have such brave men and women who risk their lives fighting these wildfires. We have firefighters here from all over helping to battle the blazes. Even firefighters from Australia have come over to help.

It breaks my heart that the wildlife are suffering. Unfortunately, there are a lot of animals being killed on the highway as they make their way away from the flames. They head down to the Shuswap Lake and Thompson Rivers but they have to cross the highway to get there. Drivers try to be careful but with the twisty roads and the poor visability due to the smoke, many animals are being hit and killed. Poor things.

awww thats so very sad gilli, i do hate to hear of any animal being killed, must be awfull to see all this happening around you, take care x

un believable really gilli, how fast it can change

3 Sep, 2009

That looks scary Gilli...I don't envy you. As you say...a fact of life but there are so many knock on effects like the road kill etc...what a shame. All best wishes to you & here's hoping for some of the rain we've been moaning about coming your way! Take care.xx

It has been dry here too Gilli...a very dry summer..so many brown lawns..surely cannot afford to water with water prices what they are.
We had a big blustery wind storm come through here and I now have to totally clear my large back deck of all flower pots and anything else starting today. I have renters/tourists, coming in on Thursday. Will be busy with that..lets hope the rainy season will start for all of us here and elsewhere that needs it soon. I could do without such high winds I think however .....but it is not abnormal. Like most of your wildfires it is natures way.

It doesn’t seem all that long ago that you had snow lying in your garden late in spring. Now you don’t have enough snow pack, a shortfall of rain and very high temperatures. Your world of extremes contributing to the destruction of these scary fires certainly puts our complaints in the UK about the weather into perspective. It makes my concerns seem silly as what I don’t like here in the summer is the just right moderately warm weather that is perfect for me combined with lots of rain that produces luscious green landscape. Also this Global warming is playing havoc with my choice of apparel when I go walking – I can never make my mind up whether to put my light jacket on or not! By the way when you recommended it, you didn’t tell me how hard it is to find a place on an ice breaker to visit Alaska in winter – seems I should have booked sooner.

8 Sep, 2009

Oh GF, what a shame that you couldn't get ice breaker reservations. Well, perhaps next year??
It must be such a hard decision about what to wear on your walk. Perhaps you should get a nice little haversack and put your light jacket in there. Along with a rain coat, dry socks, an umbrella, and a canoe. They are bound to come in handy someday. :o)

~Gilli~ you forgot wellies!
have you had enough rain yet?can we send you some!

19 Sep, 2009

Princess Gilli - I have a rucksack and have a backpack - do you have a sack? Thank you for your helpful suggestions and being concerned that I am properly equipped. You must be a serious walker if you take dry socks and a canoe with you in your haversack. I had not thought of taking a canoe with me and I think this was the most creative and helpful of your suggestions. Lakes are very inviting and I feel tempted to go for a swim except that I worry that some joker might take my clothes. I will be able to take my clothes with me when I get my canoe. Fancy forgetting wellies! - I don't suppose wellies are a priority over there with all the dry weather. I hope TT is not very disappointed with you. Now we have sorted that out I was wondering whether I can stop worrying about you breathing smoke, whether you are worn out yet from rain dancing, and whether the fires are still burning?

19 Sep, 2009

Dear GF.....I am so sorry about missing your comment on my blog. Such an oversight on my part.
Yes, you may stop worrying about me now. The rains did come...at least for a little bit. The fires were able to be contained and although most are still smoldering, they are much less threatening than they were.
That being said, there was a new fire started up yesterday to the west of us. It grew to 400 hecares in just a couple of hours. 75 people were evacuated overnight.
