A cruise and a happy event in Alaska.

Well, we are back from a fabulous week cruising the Inside Passage from Vancouver to Alaska and back. What a fantastic week it has been. The FOOD!! The Service!! The scenery!! The weather!! Everything was absolutely perfect.

We sailed out of Vancouver, BC on Wednesday the 8th at 5:00 pm and we sailed back into Vancouver at 7:00 am yesterday morning.
\

First of all, we had the obligatory lifeboat drill…..
\

Only one day was bad weather. That was the 9th and was a day “at sea”. The fog was thick all day long and the lovely scenery we could have seen was hidden away. Not to worry. We spent the day exploring the ship and…...eating (of course). The food on board was a gourmet’s delight. You had the choice of everything from hot dogs by the pool to gourmet, 5 course meals prepared by master chefs in the fancy dining room. I will have to work extra hard in the garden to wear off all the weight I’ve gained!!

On Friday the 10th we awoke to marvellous weather. The sun was shining gloriously and we were sailing in Alaskan waters. We toured Tracey Arm amidst the icebergs…..

\

........the whales….....

\

and the wonderful scenery…......

\

Next came Juneau, Alaska where we docked for the afternoon.
\

We had a cunning plan for when we reached Juneau. As my parents, Murray and I disembarked the ship we were met by a long black stretch limousime. We all climbed aboard and were whisked away to the Juneau office of Vital Statistics to sign some papers and from there were whisked away again to the Glacier Gardens where Murray and I “tied the knot”, “got hitched” or, in general terms, got married…...

\

\

It was a beautiful place to have a wedding. Lovely gardens amidst towering sitka spruce and western hemlock trees.

The next port of call after Juneau was Skagway. A tiny little town with space for many cruise ships to dock. Quite amazing really.

\

Skagway Inn had a little garden growing out front.
\

Innovative ideas for planters…....backpacks!!.........

\

After a day in Skagway, a tour of Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve by ship was scheduled. An amazing experience of being close up to the end of a glacier in a ship. Quite something…........

\

\

The next port of call was Ketchikan, Alaska. A small town with a colourful history. This is Creek Street, built on pilings and originally the towns “red light district”.

\

After Ketchikan it was unfortunately time to head for home. Another day sailing through the Inside Passage through the many little islands. This time the weather cooperated and we saw the lovely scenery.

\

When we reached Vancouver and docked carefully between several other cruise ships, we sadly said farewell to a lovely week. Back to reality…....cook your own meals….......go to work…....make your own bed…........sigh!! I could get used to the cruising life.

Just had to come back and read your blog again! My daughter and son in law are flying to Canada (Calgary) on 31 August and then going somewhere (can't remember where)by train (with a glass roof?) and then on a cruise along the inside passage! Hope that whale is still there as son in law really wants to see one :)
It is a trip they have wanted to do for a long time and, when my ex-husband died last year, they decided life was too short to delay so they booked up and are nearly on their way. Hope they enjoy it as much as you did. At least I know something of what they will be seeing.

2 Aug, 2009

Oh I bet it is the train up to Banff...I love the idea of that train and there should be whales in the inside passage along Johnstone Straits is where they like to be then they go further north from there.

3 Aug, 2009

Gee,
They will be taking the Rocky Mountaineer train through the Rockies and to Kamloops and then down to Vancouver. It is supposed to be a fabulous trip. They will board the ship in Vancouver and do the same or similar cruise to the one we did. They will have a fantastic time. I hope the weather is good for them.

The Orca whales will be following the salmon at the end of August. There should be lots in the Inside passage at that time. I'm not sure where the Humbacks will be.

If they go to Skagway, the White Pass and Yukon Route rail tour is definitely a must. Even if they just do the three hour trip to the top and back.

Wish them Bon Voyage from me. :o)

3 Aug, 2009

I wil do that, Gilli. I remember my daughter said something about a cable car trip - she is terrified of heights so hasn't made up her mind if she can do it or not! She hates flying too but should be OK on the train and ship :)

Hi Gee.........Banff to Kamloops will be very scenic. Through the Rockies and the Kicking Horse Pass, Craigellachie, Yoho National Park, Glacier National Park, Mt. Revelstoke National Park, down through the Shuswap and the South Thompson valley. They will stay overnight in Kamloops in one of the hotels at the top of the hill. The next day, Kamloops to Vancouver will be through the Fraser canyon and Hell's Gate and on through the Fraser Valley. A very nice trip.
Tell them to watch for Moose, Elk and Bears through the National Parks. Whales, seals, sea otters and bears during their cruise. And of course they will see lots of Bald Eagles. Fantastic. I hope they have a great time.

6 Aug, 2009

Thanks Gilli - I have just emailed your response through to my daughter. I am sure they will have a great time if your photos are anything to go by.

Murray looks such a sensible chap - however did he make such a big mistake? Keeping you waiting so long! I hope my happiness spell works but if it doesn't seem to be working at anytime, I have plenty more! I must say after all the weather protestations at the beginning of the year, I thought you would have headed South! Having seen your fantastic pictures however I am tempted to undertake this trip myself. When is the best time of year to do this trip? Congratulations and my very best sincere wishes for the future! Private thought: Poor Murray - I wonder if he knows what he has let himself in for! lol.

9 Aug, 2009

Love the name Craigellachie - makes me feel right at home, lol!

Also, I keep thinking about that backpack "planter" - fab!
Glad you spotted this, Gilli. :-)

9 Aug, 2009

Thanks for your good wishes GF. If I were you I'd make the trip to Alaska in the dead of winter........make sure you sail on an ice breaker! LOL

LOL David.....Sir George Stephen was the first president of the Canadian Pacific Railway and Craigellachie was his ancestral home. The Canadian Craigellachie is where the "Last Spike" of the CPR railway was driven in marking the completion of the rail line in 1885. The completion of the line connected the Pacific Coast with the rest of Canada making a transcontinental rail line from ocean to ocean which is almost 3,000 miles long.
