A wonderous thing.

A wonderous thing.

Just a quick note to let you know what happened to me today.

We had a young Robin (North American) fly into the shop today. He was old enough to be on his own but still had the speckled breast of this years fledgling.

Poor robin was flying frantically from window to window trying to find his way to freedom. We have a net a work that is used to catch hummingbirds that sometimes come into the shop after the flowers so I went to fetch it and hopefully net the robin.

When I walked up to him with the net, the little robin was sitting on the back of one of the display shelves. He looked at me and I looked at him and I put down the net as I approached closer. I held out my hand and the little robin calmly hopped on. I walked him outside and expected him to fly off but he happily sat on my hand. I walked him to the nearest bush but he didn’t want to get on. So, I walked him over to the nearest tree…..still the little guy just sat there on my hand.

Well, I stroked his chest and I stroked his back. He happily preened himself and looked around. After about 5 minutes he cocked his head on one side and looked at me as if to say “Thanks mate!” and flew off about his business.

What a wonderful experience. :o)

Gilli

PS…..If things at my end seem a little quiet it is just because we will be away for a week starting Wednesday…..we are going away on holiday to Alaska on a cruise. Be back soon.

What a wonderful experience! Robins seem to be as curious about humans as we are about birds. When I worked in an office in the countryside once there was a robin who regularly came in through the open door, seemingly to see how we were all doing, then hopped off and flew away until next time the door was open. Hope you enjoy Alaska and looking forward to the blog on your return!

What a lovely experience, Gilli, and one you will never forget. My daughter and I still talk about a little blue tit that flew through our living room window one winter. I finally caught him and sat, with my arms out the window, with him in my hand. It was ages before he flew off. Have a lovely cruise, relax and enjoy. Look forward to hearing about it when you return.

What a fantastic experience Gilli ! You must have felt so proud and privileged for a wild bird to be so trusting. When our Rocky first started to take mealworms from our hands it felt almost surreal !

Gilli..you really did have a great experience..our North American Robins are not at all as friendly normally as the European ones..they are far more wild..not about to follow us around in our garden, very closely any way. lol
I think this is a sign of much love and happiness ahead..
My best wishes and my total heart goes with you on your cruise my dear friend. Have loads and loads of fun..can not wait to hear about..!
