Compost for the restless mind.
Compost for the restless mind.

Having a lot of worrying things to think about I decided to keep busy in an effort to direct my thoughts elsewhere. What better task than to go and turn the compost piles? We are still waiting for our usual dump of snow. By this time there would be at least a foot of the white stuff to trek through. The piles had cooled and needed attention. One of them was very dry. So, pulling on my trusty wellies and gardening gloves, digging out the shovels and garden fork from the shed, I set to work.
I dug out the first pile and set up the hose pipe. As I refilled the pile I sprayed every new layer with water. Adding a few handfuls of alfalfa pellets will help speed things up again. The compost is almost done…...

The second pile needed some help so I added the contents of my compost pail from the kitchen…..chopped broccoli stalks, used tea bags, used coffee grounds, lint from the dryer, apple cores, orange peel, carrot peelings, a cut up nasty potato, banana peels, left over pea soup, cold coffee, cold tea and a large clump of dog hair (I gave Molly a haircut). Add some water and alfalfa pellets and turned it all in.
I have covered both piles as the wind has been drying to piles too much and at this time of year the outside faucet should really be turned off to stop burst pipes.

As you can see, Susie was very interested in the whole process.

It's nice that you have Susie to help you in the garden, and great to know that attending to the compost heaps is such good therapy for you. Gardening is great time for thinking and healing.
If you have anything worrying you that you want to discuss, maybe by private message, we are all here to help each other. Message me any time. I've just had NINE HOURS solid sleep, so am bouncing back here, and would be pleased to hear from you :o)

The Garden is where I do all my thinking and made life changing decisions. It is my greatest silent friend. I love it out there. I must say all the major decisions I have made during gardening have worked out just fine. Gardening is the way to go. But some people need support of friends therefore we are here. Have a good day!

Hi Gilli, i find gardening so theriputic (think i spelt that wrong lol) really good for anger management too, i usually save the compost heap for times when i have had a bit of upset with Brookes other grandmother (AKA wicked witch of the west!) she his flying in on her broomstick tomorrow so i should imagine my compost heap will get a good sorting out over the weekend! lol. and my private message pad is always open! x

Hope your feeling a bit brighter today after all that work with your compost, keep your chin up & take care.

I hope your worries are not too serious.
As others have said we're all supportive of each other here as I have found.
I'm glad you sorted your compost out.

Thanks to all for your kind comments. I have always found that the garden is my sanctuary. There is something about digging in the soil and being around growing plants that settles the mind.
My step-son is not well at the moment and is constantly on my mind. Everyone here is so kind and supportive. Forgive me if I sound a little blue over the next while.
The compost is looking good although I think I made the one pile a little TOO wet. The top is frozen solid this morning. Oh well, I guess I'll remove the cover on that one.

Hi Gilli, I hope your stepson improves soon so that you don't worry too much. Your 'blue-ness' is quite understandable.
Hywel.

Wow, what a caring group, U guys are great, nice to encounter this in this crazy world we live in. Hope all goes well Gilli, are you in BC?
Great tip about the pellets, will use that as well in my compost, I know roses love alfalfa pellets as well. Chin up!!

Will be thinking of you and your son Brad Gilli , take care x

Thanks Adoons and Amy. The news of Brad is not good but it's not the worst either so we will plow on ahead and try and keep our chins firmly up.
Adoons, I am in Kamloops so not so far from you. You're on Gabriola aren't you? Beautiful place. I love the Gulf Islands although its been a while since I last visited. I used to have friends with a house on Galliano but they are no longer there. The same with Saltspring. Are you on the ocean?
Roses do love alfalfa and bananas and coffee grounds. :o)
29 Nov, 2008
Will my roses like it if I sprinkle coffee grounds near the base of the plant ? They already get all my banana skins. :o)
29 Nov, 2008
TT ~ you can sprinkle the coffee grounds directly around the base of the rose (not up against the stems) and they will perk up their heads and smile at you. :o)
I know some rose growers who collect coffee grounds from Starbucks or similar coffee houses just to apply to the base of their roses or to add to their compost. I don't go that far but I save all ours from home.

Yup Gilli we are on the ocean, and today it is lovely and soft fog is enveloping the garden and house. We use to have a log house in Eagle Bay & then lived on the Shuswap for years. We use to drive through Kamloops for many years.
