My Garden in November and December

My November blog didn’t happen as I’ve been having some work done to sort out the drainage problems in my garden and to be honest I’d got a bit fed up with it all! You can probably see why -

But let’s ignore all that for now, and look at how my plants have been doing instead :)

My last rose flowering, a brave effort amongst all the piles of earth and then frost -

I’ve been happy because the birds have finally come back :)

I’ve been sticking peeled apples in the tree for them as well as leaving some on the ground, it’s proved popular -

And for something a bit festive – a Christmas tree :)

I’ve been watching this grow all year and you can see the different stages of growth by the different colours, the oldest growth closest in to the trunk is the darkest green, and then each stage of new growth coming out gets lighter and lighter until the newest yellowy tips. I like it :)

Super pics - I'm defo going to peel those apples and get them somewhere the blackbirds can enjoy them!!!!!
That tree looks even better close up than in you question shot.

Lovely pics,G.gem..and great to see the Blackbird enjoying the apples..Lovely Christmas tree too,and the Mahonia is such a welcome splash of colour..I hope you have a happy Christmas, and a good gardening year in 2013.

Thanks Terra, I really hope the drainage will be sorted soon, it feels like it's been going on forever and I want my garden back!!! Hopefully a new start in the New Year :o)

Hywel I had thought of getting some outdoor lights for the tree but haven't got round to it yet, and I seem to be running out of time ... Maybe I'll see if I can get some in the sales for next year :o)

Thanks Diane :)

Scottish I really like the different colours on the tree, I've never noticed it on other Christmas trees before.

Thanks Bloomer, happy Christmas to you too, I really hope it'll be a good gardening year as there's a lot to be done out there ;o) The blackbirds are spoilt in my garden, there's a choice of apples, raisins, crushed up peanuts, dried mealworms, fat balls, buggy nibbles, and high-energy suet sprinkles ... The suet sprinkles seem to be the current food of choice!

Blimey,It's very 'al a carte' in your garden,G,gem....what a choice !I have just dashed out and wedged a sizeable apple core in the lower branches of a Weigela..so I will watch which bird comes first..if any :o)

It's an all-you-can-eat buffet Bloomer! I don't have many birds visiting at the moment though so my generousity might change if more arrive and start eating me out of house and home ;o)
I'll be interested to hear if you get any takers for your apple!

ok,I'll let you know..these pesky birds eat better than we do !:o)

Lovely photos GG....and I bet the mess will all turn out to be well worth the trouble in the end. You'll soon be putting your stamp on that lovely garden! :)

The Apple cores didn't get many takers,G.gem..only the odd peck or two,so threw them over the fence, and saw the Pigeons and Magpies having a go..so at least they enjoyed them..I've just swept the snow off a low wall ,to give the Blackbirds a hearty breakfast, similar to the ones you give yours..and there will be bacon fat cut up ,for lunch..for them ,not me :o)

Thanks Karen, your encouragement about the mess being worth it in the long run is very timely as it's been getting to me a bit recently ... I can't wait till it's done and the weather improves so I can get planting :o)

Bloomer the birds are funny what they will and won't eat aren't they?! Mine will eat whole apples that have been peeled and put in the tree and apple halves that are left on the ground (though they do prefer them sliced through the middle rather than down the core...!), but they won't touch the chopped up apple that I've defrosted from my freezer - and I know it's not that bad because I've been eating it myself ;o)

They must be evolving to expect the finer foods of life,G.gem..gone are the days when all they got was stale bread...maybe you should have made your apple with a crumble,or some custard ! LOl...fussy little so and so's !
Very ungrateful ...:o)

Thanks Spennygarden :)
I was lucky there were quite a few nice plants already here when I moved in, the mahonia was one of them. Definitely worth it for the colour when not much else is left!
