Its latin name if you are looking for it is 'Saponaria officinalis etc. This one 'walks' but isn't a thug. I don't think that it's very common, you don't see it in gardens that often. Mine isn't as tall as that, though. You got a bargain there, Angie!

Its a tall Soapwort! much different to the ground cover varieties, i would highly recomend it it stands approx 4ft tall and the smell is wonderful! it does smell like soap! i got this one in the sale at B & Q last autumn it think it cost about £1 it was very bedraggled and it had one weedy little flower on it - i had no idea it would be so glorious this year! a rather plesant suprize! - even my next door neighbour has commented on it - and he is not a lover of plants!

I do see. We've got a plant that does that. Don't know what it is though, it's a bit like a bottle brush and has green flowers. It'll have to go when we make a rockery sloping down to the patio because this one will swamp everything else

No, it grows under the ground and along and pops up a bit further away, if you see what I mean!

when i first discovered this site I'd put all garden designs on my favourites but now I'm focussing more on the actual plants! Yes I think a little book would be good for when we visit nurseries/ garden centres etc so I know what to look for. Does this plant self seed then or just spread?

You'll have to do what I do, Joannie - have a little book and use it as a 'wish list'! lol.

Thanks maple I liked the way the photo turned out, so I am using it as a desktop background! The photo is of one bloom from a stem which has several blooms around it. The plant was put in 2 years ago, flowered with 2 stems the first August, and has spread to 8 stems this year! I believe you can get white ones, too, this one has 'Rosea' after the Saponaria officinale. (I found the plant label!)
