There are about 900 species of sage that include annuals, perennials and shrubs. The genus includes both the culinary herb as well as colourful bedding varieties.

Salvia officinalis is the most widely used herb - an essential ingredient in sage and onion stuffing!

Scarlet sage or S. splendens is often used as bedding – it comes in hot red and purple as well as pastel pinks, lilacs and blues.

Salvia comes from the Latin ‘salveo’ meaning ‘I heal’ which may refer to its use as an herbal remedy for a whole range of problems from indigestion to insect bites!
